Hey guys,

Anyone got any recommendations on a decent after market exhaust/muffler for a BMW 550?.

I want something that makes the engine sound throaty, something legal!!, and not too loud.

Any ideas?, places? Manufacturers??

What about dinan? They have some pretty decent after market exhausts? Try hartge too, they seem to be a pretty good German tuner

You can get the dinan stuff at calgary bmw, not sure about hartge but tunerworks should be able to help you with that

I've heard a few Magnaflow's now paired up with V8's, you just can't go wrong!

Awesome. Thanks a lot!

Go see Tunerworks, they will have. A lot of options depending on the $$$$ you want to spend.

A good place for exhaust installs - Minute Muffler and Brake on 32nd (beside XS Cargo). Go see Ravi, he's a Beyond member as well.

BMW makes their own performance exhausts as well. If you go to Calgary BMW for service see Andrew Lobas (Service advisor) he is awesome to deal with and will take care of you without a doubt.

not sure about entire systems, but if you want adjustability check out varex mufflers. They've got an adjustable butterfly in them so you can switch from muffled to straight thru for when you 'hit the track'

Tunerworks will have the broadest selection.

Eisenmann, Dinan, Corsa, and Remus all make great systems. Corsa is the only one that doesn't drone (I'm speaking based on e92 M3 systems but I think that would carry over).

Davenport is a Corsa dealer so you could check with them as well.

Ticket for 'widened exhaust'

Seriously though, Magnaflow's are loud and all, but I think there are better sounding exhaust systems from some of the German tuners...

For future reference if anyone searches it, altho I'm sure it's been posted before, this is what the alberta laws are on it...

Mufflers

(1) A motor vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine
must have an exhaust muffler that cools and expels the exhaust
gases from the engine without excessive noise and without
producing flames or sparks.

(2) A person shall not drive or operate a motor vehicle propelled
by an internal combustion engine if the exhaust outlet of the
muffler has been widened.

(3) A person shall not drive or operate a motor vehicle propelled
by an internal combustion engine if a device is attached to the
exhaust system or the muffler that increases the noise made by the
expulsion of gases from the engine or allows a flame to be ignited
from the exhaust system.

(4) This section applies to a power bicycle that is propelled by an
internal combustion engine.

Regardless of what the law says cops issue 'widened exhaust' tickets all the time for mufflers that are aftermarket and/or loud.

Even watched the pig give a bone stock STi an exhaust ticket, morons.

I also could have sworn that in the law somewhere there was a clause saying something about the 'exhaust must exit outside the perimeter of the car' or something. Perhaps that was in BC tho.

x2 , LOVE the Magnaflow on my American v8. Subtle but noticeable at idle, throaty with the pedal down and best of all, no drone at highway cruising speeds. Even being a cat less exhaust it doesn't sound at all obnoxious unless it's north of 5 k rpm. I've gotten a ton of compliments on it.

And also x2 for Ravi at MM..that's where I got mine installed!

Akrapovic does not drone either... Supersprint make great stuff also.

The Magnaflow's that I've heard on Euro v8's actually sound really nice and smooth. I guess it comes down to your budget, and for a stainless steel system it's tough to beat Magnaflow in my books :dunno: A lot of those Euro- specific boutique exhaust manufacturers seems to have a very hefty price tag.

I've heard magnaflows on a v8 M5 and hated the sound, its very raspy and hollow.

Personally I like the stealthy power of a german V8, it should stay quiet. The expensive diverter valve is right up my alley :)

How much do you guys think cops make? And/ or do you really think a 550's much more expensive than a pimped pick up?

yeah...but magnaflow quality is just terrible compared to other exhaust manufacturers out there.

I would recommend Eisenmann, Meistershaft, or Supersprint. Good quality systems with decent gains, and wicked sound.

Thumbs up for this.

I got Ravi to tweak and mod the exhaust on my Benz and he did an awesome job. He doesn't charge ridiculously and does a great job.

LOL just poking some fun! Couldn't resist that one. And you're right, a 2013 Cummins or Duramax built the way I would want it would easily be over 100k lol

Good choice. Did a v12 BMW with customer-spec'd magnaflows and it sounded less than ideal in my books. It was so low and bassy. It was louder than stock, just, but didn't have any real character.
Never heard the dynomax on a BMW, but on the v8's they are a bit raunchier, so it's likely a good fit.

@Traffic_Cop.. As long as your exhaust outlet is exactly the same size as stock we'll be okay ;)...

Look up Aquray, for a 550.. Not sure if they make them for your model but they are quality.
