So my mum came over and stayed with us and turned on the fan about 3 weeks ago (its next to light switch) i never noticed but furnace has been running alot lately. Has anyone had this happen to them, am i likely to see a big gas bill?

We have a heat recovery ventilation system.

I put timers on the bathroom fans, for just this reason.

Not exactly the same but I had a salt water fish tank that ran 24/7 and when I took it down, my electricity bill only went down $30-40 a month. Shouldn't be to bad.

Your bill will be up a little. Take a deep breath. Not a big deal.

As far as electricity costs, it'll be nothing. A ventilation fan is around 28 watts.

28x24 hours= 672
x21 days = 14,112 watt hours or 14 k/wh's.
@ .08/kwh's = $1.12

The amount of heated air it's pulling out is minimal, hardly enough to have the furnace running anymore than usual

Yeah it wasnt the ventilation fan in the bathroom it was the whole house fan. I was more concerned that the cost of the gas for running the heat so often to replace lost heat, the house never felt cold though.

^Isn't that just the vent fan? It's electric and isn't part of the furnace, that's how my house is anyways.

Yes but my understanding was it removed all your heated air which then meant your furnace was on constantly heating up your house again.

The "ventilation fan" switch works by recirculating heated air using the furnace fan. This usually also means bringing in fresh (outside) air. The furnace only fires if your thermostat determines it needs to call for heat.

Newer homes have an exhaust fan that pulls air through your cold air returns and exhausts it out of the house. It's a separate fan from the furnace fan.

My home was built in late 2006. However this makes sense because when it was on and the furnance wasnt on there was cooler air coming out the vents.
