So around the end of last summer I started looking for a project. I didnt have much room to work on something around my place so I was looking for something small.

I came across a 1991 Honda Beat in Vancouver on Craigslist
Here is the ad:

ime to sell some toys

It's a mini-NSX.
It's fun. Turn corners FAST.
It's reliable. Fuel efficient 660cc.

1991 Honda Beat.
Convertible, Kei-car
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_Beat

BC registered. (i think 4 yrs in Canada). Passed Air Care easily.
Odometer reads 37,000 km, but may not true.

Recent work done...
Steering wheel.
Removed non-functioning AC & stereo (40 lb lighter)
Timing belt.
Spark plugs.
Oil change.
Lowering springs.
Sway bar polyurethane bushing.

What's not good about it?
1) Leaky soft top. ... so i take the entire top off. I only drive when it's sunny anyway. a USED no-leak soft top avail for $250.
2) stock wheels have weird tire sizes that you can't find in North America.
For extra $800, I will sell you the 14x6 Miata wheels with new 195/45/14 tires and spacers to make it fit.

We negotiated a price, and that weekend I had my brother (who works for westjet buddy pass me over to pick it up)

I opted to go alone so I could bring back the stock wheels, in the end, I havent needed them at all, and with the amount of wheels I have been ordering, I tdont think I will, but it never hurts to have them kicking around.

Figured I would do a build thread on this car, as its somewhat unusual, and I know there is or has been a couple guys on this forum that have some experience with this car.

Here are some pics of the drive home, and the when I picked it up.

http://imageshack.us/a/img651/9827/img0952d.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/651/img0952d.jpg/)

Anyways, thats all for now. Much more to update so I will reserve the next couple spots as I gotta run for now.

Awesome project! I've always love these. How was the drive back from BC? How did it managed the long hills?

loweg

Took about 13.5 hours. Met a buddy in revelstoke for a couple beers and dinner.

Car could handle the hills no problem, and could do 140.

Not everyone is a fan, infact I tried to buy some seats off of a guy on here and when he didnt like my offer, he kept texting me "insults" about the car for like 2 solid days.

Driving it around is like driving a go cart really on the street.

At the moment, I have a 4 piece lip kit, and a spoiler at Screamin Paintworks. Here are manufacturer pics of the lip kit.
http://imageshack.us/a/img208/8711/photojul16030717.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/208/photojul16030717.jpg/)

I also put an axle back muffler on cutting out a huge amount of weight from the old muffler. Here is a pic of it on my couch with can for size reference.

http://imageshack.us/a/img849/6903/img1112ci.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/849/img1112ci.jpg/)

Again I used Noppin.com for the parts. They were shipped on December 21 in Japan, and went Anchorage Alaska, Memphis TN, and the Calgary and showed up on Christmas Eve. Box looked like it had been ridden all the way from Japan but everything was in great shape!

Gonna make an effort to take some other pics of the parts that are arriving this week incl the CF48's

So, new stuff is getting shipped out today (tonite) or tomorrow from Japan, inlcuding the two sets of rims, a front tower bar, and a carbon fibre vent for the cooling on the trunk.

Here are some pics. These are the actual mugen cf48's that are coming. Still trying to track down aero covers.

The rims are 14x6 with a +35 offset. Very similar to the miata wheels that are on there at the moment.

http://imageshack.us/a/img689/2169/photojan27202457.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/689/photojan27202457.jpg/)

I think I am going to plasti-dip them this in this fashion. Havent used the plasti-dip yet. Anyone got tips or tricks?

http://imageshack.us/a/img28/2285/photojan27202903.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/28/photojan27202903.jpg/)

I also have a vent cover coming for the cooling gaps in the trunk. The vent looks similar to this one (they took the pic down off the auction I won) This will hide the brake light as well that is on the trunk.

http://imageshack.us/a/img594/217/photojan27202735.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/594/photojan27202735.jpg/)

Here is what the trunk looks like.
http://imageshack.us/a/img163/2949/img1135qz.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/163/img1135qz.jpg/)

THats all for now.

Not sure if the SSR rims will even fit. If they do they will look either crazy good, or absolutely ridiculous. It was really really hard to find 4x100 ssr meshies. For the rears I ended up with 14x7.5 -9 offset. For the fronts, which will have to be spaced out I ended up with 13x5.5 +20 offset. right now, just to make the 14x6+38's work, there is a 25 mm spacer on the front and a 5 mm on the back.

Any insite on tire size or if it will even work?

Thanks

Look into cutting the trunk vents a little more. Search MR2 trunk mount intercoolers. You'll see guys running those scoops on the trunk. I guess it depends if you think you'll need more cooling.

loweg
01-29-2013, 01:22 PM
Think it's fine for cooling in the limited amount I've driven it. The day I drove back from Vancouver was 33 and had her revved up nice and high for most of the trip and everything was good, but i will for sure look into it.

So I have a shipment coming in from Japan on Wednesday via fedex.

On the shipment is

2 x ssr mesh 14x7.5 -9 offset
2 x mesh 13x5.5 +20 offset
4 x mugen cf 48
1 x trunk vent in carbon
Beat "sail screws" in black (new screws for the roof)
Extended "sail screws" for older tops that have shrunk a little
1x interior panel that was broken
1x black with red stitch shift boot
2 x very jdm beat keychains
1 x tower strut bar for the front

I also bid on, and won an oem cover for when the top is down. And a bunch of aftermarket lugs in different colours last night.

It looks though like I will have to order some washers for the lugs though as they are conical and from everything I have read the ssr rims and likely the cf48's have a ball seating (as they are oem) Think I might just order the washers up before I am even sure as they're not too expensive and I'm pumped to see what they look like on the car.

GEtting them from Yahoo Japan auctions.

Beat is a crazy fanboy car over there.

NExt couple weeks should be pretty big, full lip kit and spoiler going on as well as two sets of wheels to play with.

I use a proxy service.

Noppin.com

You can search without an acct on their sight, they communicate with sellers as most will not ship international.

I have another thread on here about it.

Actually the owner of Noppin went to school and toured in Canada. Super nice people. Its not the cheapest, but there are good deals to be had.

Small update:

So in preparation for all the wheels coming in tomorrow I took the miata rims off Sundays to steal the falkens off them and sell them. (Anyone interested ?)

When I took them off I came to realize the spacers used on the rear had made it so the lugs were all only on 3-4 threads (drove back from vancouver like that yech). So I ordered some arp extended wheel studs last night. Which are perhaps overkill for the 64 hp I'm putting down but at least it will be safe.

Also ordered a couple colours of extended open ended lugs. I already had a set of blue extended close ended and a set of rays red close ended lugs coming so those will also be up for grabs.

loweg

Another minor update.

Just got an email from Dave at screamin paintworks says the lip kit and spoiler are good to go for this weekend.

Mugen cf 14 are mounted and balanced. Going to plasti-dip them black tonite, but thinking I might like white more so we will see how black looks (as I already have it.

Customs is holding onto my extended wheel studs so that has delayed install of cf 48s

And I am sad to say that the ssr mesh were too aggressive for the beat. They stick out a solid 2 3/4 inches In the rear. But all is not lost. Just ordered extended wheel studs for the Subaru sambar, and will be rocking them on the truck this summer.

also how much does it cost to ship rims from japan to calgary?

loweg
02-09-2013, 12:50 AM
Rims were approximately 350-400 a set to ship to canada. These were for 14 inch rims. Also had the option of sending them ocean frieght which was 1-3 months at only half the price.

Anyways for the update.

Waiting on my extended wheel studs to come in to do anything with rim and tires. But did manage to get the cf 48's plati-dipped tonite. Its so easy to work with. Took 4 beers to finish doing it.

Heres a couple pics

(4th beer in hand)

They look so good. I taped, but you do not need to tape the tires comes right off once dry.

Decided I dont want it to be flat black so I'm headed out to pick up the glossifier tomorrow and do a couple coats.

Also, these rims, the miata rims are for sale, taking offers. 14x6 +35-40 ish

I'll take some pics tonite.

Yesterday installed front and rear lips and prepped sideskirts.

Right now with the lowering springs, I have a mere 2x4 worth of clearance

I did run into some trouble with a missing caliper carrier bolt and need to find one. does this look like a standard caliper carrier bolt off an eg civic?

Update:

Bolt has been found. Its the same as the ones on eg civics.

I'll throw them on tomorrow or the next day.

Here are a couple pics. Still waiting for my extended studs so I can put on the cf48's.

As youcan see the rear lip looks great, as well as the front, but it is undriveably low. ORdering coilovers pretty quick here so it can be raised up.

Should be all ready for summer by April

So I was super dissapointed with the ssr rims not fitting so I was gonna just throw them on kijiji. But then I thought to myself. Why the hell not throw them on the mini truck.

The fronts will be the same as you can see on the car 13x5.5 plus 20 offset. Might stick out another cm. But should tuck pretty nicely in the front wells.

Rear will be the 14x7.5 with likely a full size tire on it ( still gotta see) But this gives you an idea of the stance.

And just another picture of the beat to show you why I am having to order some coils to get it off the ground.

http://imageshack.us/a/img818/2210/photofeb12215835.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/818/photofeb12215835.jpg/)

mr2mike

Missed this, but why didn't the SSR's not fit on the car?
Those wheel wells are insanely large up front with very high arches. So my guess is that it rubs on the strut. If so, coilovers with adj pillow mounts should fix that, then with some spacers, it should clear anything. Then align it with some crash bolts (special camber bolts) to tuck the wheels.

loweg
02-21-2013, 10:28 AM
You are absolutely correct. The wheels do In Fact fit the beat. Even without spacers in the rear and the fronts are the same a s the miata wheels. So no problems there. The problem was that even without any spacers they stuck out way too far. Totally my fault by picking too aggressive of an offset.

Next time I have wheels off the beat ill throw one on just to show you how ridiculous it was. They stuck out a solid 2.5 inches past the wheel well.

I figured the truck already looks ridiculous. Why the hell not keep it going with some staggered wheels? My only worry is that the extra weight is going to slow the truck down that much more. Only time will tell. Perhaps the truck will have to turn into a cruiser (j/k). Truck rolls with stock 12 inch wheels usually, and when I put the vx civic rims on it was a much more comfortable ride.

Just a super small update...

I have coming a shipment with the following
Full coilover suspension
A variety of open end lugs for both sambar and the beat
Beat seatbelt clips which seem to break quite often
A ricer tow hook
extra set of sidemarkers to make clear sides
And a convertible top cover for when the top is down

In the meantime, got my good buddy to help mount some tires on the ssr and they fit the sambar flawlessly. I warn you these are horrible horrible pics but they give you the idea.

http://imageshack.us/a/img849/3509/photomar07001034.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/849/photomar07001034.jpg/)

One of my favorite cars on the forum, I've always loved Kei cars and the Beat just stood out as a mini NSX.

Thanks for sharing the build progress with us!

Where did you find both the beat and the Sambar? Ive wanted both for a while now. Did you find them locally or used a JDM importer from Vancouver?

loweg

Sambar was local (might be selling soon ;-))

Beat was Vancouver Craigslist . Flew out and drove home. (Might only keep this one summer as there is another jdm kei project I am looking to start)

Thanks for the positive responses. Gonna try to hit jdm source this weekend to see if we can make dc2 recaros fit

Got my second child due at the end of the month so time is ticking

Pm me first if you want to sell the Sambar, we can sure use something like that on our farm for running around and whatnot.

Not much for an update. Got a momo race and a personal steering wheel on the way from Japan to replace the cheapie Chinese one that came with the car.

Going to try to get into jdm source this week to see what's kicking around for recaros. Can't decide whether to go black with red stitch or just plain red. Any input?

Also looking for someone that may be able to retrofit up some seat rails for the recaros? Anyone know someone?

Other than that... Just been putting in some interior panels that were broken and needed replacing and tinkering with the new coils.

I did bid on some nr10 rims for it but was outbid and auction ended at 4 am.

Also gonna throw together an ad here for all the stuff I'm not using on the beat. Got plenty of leftover tuner lugs, wheel spacers, steering wheels and decided not to use the tow hook as well. Taking offers

This is a really bad pic, but you get the idea. Seat wont even touch down into the well on stock type r rails. Likely going to need to order rails from Japan I am thinking.

But I suppose it is progress.

If you are bidding on ebay, you need to get something like esnipe to help you bid better. Solid service, and saves you from having to stay up all night if the auction ends at a stupid hour.

Have you used the carbon air intake on the side? Does it have any kind of filter or does the air just go straight to the engine block?

Looking good, cheers!

loweg

As far as EBay goes. I'm bidding on yahoo Japan through a proxy service. Can't really bid snipe as auctions get extended If anuone bids in last 10 mins in 5 min increments . Once this has been done every bid extends 5 mins and it becomes a war of attrition .

Carbon vents. I'd considered these originally, and might do them in the future who knows. The vents seem mostly for brakes. As the rear brakes are larger in the beat. Although air indirectly pulls from engine compartment either through bouncing around in there, or a Venturi effect. They make clip on kits to send more air to engine from rear ducts .

Last night before hockey I managed to sneak away a few moments from our newborn and toddler and install a new 330 mm momo wheel and tinker around with the toneau cover. Ill get some pics this weekend

So a little bit of an update. I'll go out and take some cruddy phone pics in a bit. Wouldnt mind meeting up with 1 or 2 other car guys for a bit of a photo op (with someone with a good camera or someone who can show me how to use me 40D)

Picked up a set of red JDM recaros for the Beat. Ordered custom seat rails from Japan that fit very nicely and were quite reasonably priced (~200 with freight). Then ran into a problem. Everytime I measured to make sure it was big enough for recaros, I measured the driverside. I failed to realize that the driverside was a solid 1.5 inches wider than the passengers.

So needless to say I'm rocking only one seat right now, whilst the other goes on a bit of a diet. I think it will end up a non reclining fixed seat. Going to finish tearing it apart tonite so it can be cut and welded Monday.

Other than that I really havent done too much. I ordered a 330 mm momo wheel and a 330 mm personal wheel from the auctions. not sure which I prefer yet, but I am currently rocking the momo.

Nothing else really new, just rolled over 40,000 km and figured out that my duck toller loves the convertible. I'll grab some pics and post again in a bit.

To answer some questions. Next project, I am thinking Nissan Pao on airbags.
Where did I get the wing? Yahoo Japanese auctions. Company is called Erou motorsports if I recall correct.

Hondabeat - do you have a hondabeat? If so I have a few extra parts I could sell. Let me know.

Ok, so finally got time to update some pics on here whilst the little ones and wife are sleeping.

Here are pics of the driverside recaro

http://imageshack.us/a/img27/9053/photomay07205359.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/27/photomay07205359.jpg/)

And here is a pic of the momo wheel I have in there. Not even sure which momo wheel it is. Was 50 bucks on a japanese auction and is 330 mm

http://imageshack.us/a/img819/9681/photomay10164751.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/819/photomay10164751.jpg/)

The other option I have is this personal wheel also 330 mm
http://imageshack.us/a/img7/1964/photomay10164832.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/7/photomay10164832.jpg/)

And I am super torn as to whether or not to put these on. They're overfenders for the rear. Dont make it any wider for wheels, they are just lipstick. I also have the fronts which look ridiculous. Here is a pic of what they could look like painted and on as well.

Sorry...

Been busy with life, kids, and the recent weather we have had here in Calgary. The floods were/are absolutely nuts.

Have not done too much to the car. Installed the passenger recaro. Pretty much needed a shoehorn to get it in.

Also won a backyard special 'autocross' style roll bar (will do nothing if roll) in an auction in Japan

And some fancy pants carbon fibre inserts

Also, made a set of clear sidemarkers as well

Here are a couple pics as well as one of the recent floods here in Calgary

The way we had to do the passenger side seat required it to be welded together in a fixed recline. I am going to have to shim up the seat a little when I get a chance.

I'm also planning on taking a shitty iphone video so you can hear what the car sounds like. It is ridiculously loud, but small and fun to drive.

Sorry for the delay. My next project is to do some carbon fibre skinning then I will likely sell it and move onto another project.

Car is about the same, really havent had enough time to drive it this summer. Thinking of throwing her up for sale here, or just holding onto it until next.

Auctions got the best of me in Japan again. Ordered two new sets of rims for the beat and/or the sambar Here are a couple auction pics.

Right now it's rolling on mugen cf48's. been looking for some nr10's, but they are either beat to sh!t or crazy money.

Works are meister cr-01r not too many sets out there from what I'm told... Which sucked because there was some auction competition for them.

They will be tight to fit, not sure they will work, so if anyone is looking for staggered 4x100/114.3 14's they may be available. Or ill two em on the drift sambar.

That sure was me on centre street. Car is super loud, but without a horn... Straight pipes save lives lol. Get turned into quite often in this little guy.

I removed the stock exhaust which was basically a loop-dee-loop behind the back bumper and added an axle back which is pretty much header to muffler in 20 inches.

Car is so fun to drive, but with two kids under 2 I have found myself without much time to drive!

I do like the cappucino! Everything but the mirrors that is.

Well, not much of an update.

Car is in storage and a couple parts have trickled in.

PIcked up some carbon brake vents for the rear vents on the car as well as a j's rear strut bar.

I have decided if I keep it I would like to widen the rear. I have only found one set of rear overfenders, made by backyard special out of Japan. They are an arm and a leg to get though so we will see.

I have also toyed around with the idea of selling it as of late, just due to being too busy in the summers with the kids. Might try to pick up an alto works, nissan pao or something with a backseat that my kid(s) could ride in.

Who knows what will happen, there has been a fair bit of interest to buy it in the states from my honda-tech thread, so you never know.

For now, it will likely be overfenders and some new wheels for spring.

Well, after what seems like the longest winter ever, it seems that we might be getting a little bit of springtime now!

Took an hour away from the kids this afternoon to install a couple new things on the beat.

First off, Gathers Sky Sound Honda Beat 20th anniversary audio center. Ever since I got the beat I have been baffled as to what to do with the audio. The OEM unit is not a single din, or a double din, it tapers from just over the width of a single din, to just under. I probably would have left it stock, but the previous owner had removed the oem radio elecctronics, and just left the faceplate. He then removed one of the very few storages in the beat (a small glove box) and installed a 15 year old alpine deck.

This is how it looked before (pic from last season)
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640x480q90/38/photomay10164730.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/12photomay10164730j)

You can just make out the deck in the front left passenger footwell. Cumbersome to change radio with a passenger.

This is what it was replaced with

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640x480q90/19/arzg.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/0jarzgj)

THe new gathers unit offers ipod/iphone music and video playing, an input for a rearview camera, fm radio up to 90.0 (yeah) music and video selection integrated through the head unit. It also offered a factory harness conversion and a great set of intructions on install.
