View Full Version : Finally got my Mustang!

After a few months of daily looking on Ebay, Kijiji and just about everywhere else I am finally able to say I own a vintage mustang.

Its a 68 Mustang that has barely been driven since it has been restored. It came from Vernon BC. The last owner did the majority of the work, but before that it was owned in Vancouver, BC. Don't know anything beyond that.

It has a 302 4V with a 4 BBL 500 CFM Edelbrock Carb, and a C4 Transmission. I really wanted a standard, but this car was a pretty good price and worth the sacrifice I think. It sounds awesome.

The car was completely rewired with a Ron Francis Wiring system. It has the Dakota Digital Dash guages which I think is pretty cool. The stock stereo was replaced with an alpine system. I wish the old radio was there, and I would have went with one of the hidden units to have that still look stock.

Can't wait till I can cruise with it. I took it out yesterday to show it off to a few people, but it sounds like the snow is on its way again, so I imagine that will be it till Spring/Summer.

Hope you like it. I know I am going to love taking this out.

Yeah, the old radio would be nice and the digital guages seem out of place.....both minor things that are easily changed should you ever be inclined though so no big deal.

I don't like Mustangs of that era but if you do (like you), that's a hell of a nice example. It's a very nice car, enjoy it!

Definitely a different direction than where my 68 is going, but clean nonetheless. Mine won't be original because of all the new parts and my own flavor but man, unsure about those speakers being there.

Holy shit that's a nice car!

Any way to build some sort of cover for the fuse panel? Looks a little out of place in an otherwise sano interior!

Are you talking about the kick panel speakers? Not sure there is much room to put the speakers anywhere else.

cornelius85
01-28-2013, 03:15 PM
Ha Ha. Wondered if anyone would comment on that. I wondered why the hell you would mount it there. Until I got it and realized with how big it is, there isn't really any place to put it. I will be covering it, but not sure yet with what. I think the best would be to match the carpet, but I have no idea where I would be able to get a matching carpet for it that actually matches. I may just have to build a wooden box to match the wood grain.

Nice. 68. Arguably the best year of the classic mustangs. I had a 66' with a 6 cylinder for a little while. Bit of a piece but it was a good runner. Sold it to some guy who turned it into a GT clone with a huge ass engine.

yeah I started looking at a base car that I could rebuild as I thought the wife would never go for spending that much money on a "toy". I found a car I decided to see what she thought of, and she gave me the go ahead which I never expected. Then the gears started turning to see if I could find a better car, and they just kept getting better and better. I have a side business building reptile cages, so that basically paid for it with some of the money I made last year. Couple that job with a full time job and the reality is I would never have the spare time, nor the know how to be able to restore a car like that, and paying to get one done for you usually ends up costing twice as much.

I haven't really ever gone to too many car shows, so I am excited for the summer to check a few out. I grew up in Lethbridge so I really want to go down for Street Wheelers weekend as well. I remember being in high school cruising around in my old Jetta cruising with all these awesome vehicles I wish I owned.

Looks really nice, I think the digital gauges were tastefully done. I can't believe you found one in this kind of condition that somebody was willing to part with.

Aftermarket stereos drive me nuts, If they made a radio that would fit into the interior of something older than a late 90s civic with all the bells and whistles I'd buy it up in a second. And then they wonder why there is no market for these after market decks :banghead:

Out of curiosity what is a deck like that worth? The car is pretty loud obviously so having high def sound isn't a big priority. I definitely think the look of it would fit better though.

Mcintosh decks are pretty high quality, I imagine they cost alot. From the last time I looked at them they don't have Bluetooth either which is kinda a minus in my book, but if you want something that will fit the look of an older car its either that or maybe Nakamichi.

MrSector9
01-28-2013, 06:22 PM
$1400 on amazon haha, they are steep, and you have to run amps as it does not have an internal amp.

The nakamichi's are also nice but not quite as "oldschool" looking, they also sound amazing, I still have my old one in the garage as I do not want to get rid of it.

Yeah there is no bluetooth, no mp3s.

You don't need to go macintosh or nakamichi to have the old school look with major updates. This is the one I'm using...

How does that one sound? It may be an option. The price is definitely one I would consider. Is there bezels to turn it back to original?

03ozwhip
01-28-2013, 11:26 PM
It fits in the original bezel and if you search a little bit on the mustang shop website, you'll find an original bezel. I think I have an extra original, but might not be in the greatest shape.

MrSector9
01-29-2013, 08:39 AM
I would gurantee it would sound good enough you would not ever be upset with sound quality and it would be perfect, I figured someone would make something like that with the amount of older cars being restored and people wanting new features.

Dammit I have been on the Mustang Shop website a ton of times, and I just realized that they are not only in Calgary, but only 5 minutes away from work. This could lead to a bunch of money leaving my wallet I think.

Wonder what he wants for it. That must be a new posting. I have been looking since September, and there has been a lot of mustangs that have been posted and reposted its nice to see a new posting once in a while. You should see this grey one I mentioned in Florida. It is mint. If he reposts it again on ebay I will send the link as if you are looking to get one it would be the one I would get. He's kicking himself as he got greedy and backed out of our deal I had with him, and he thought he could get more, and the buyer backed out a month later. Karmas a bitch..

There are so many mustangs in the US that they go for pretty cheap by comparison to out here.

I'm not sure where mine came from. The one on the site doesn't surround the shifter so it is different than that one. Mine surrounds the shifter and the cup holders are past it. I will see if I can spot it in the receipts he gave me. I'm curious to add up all the receipts as it is a 3" ring binder full of receipts. He said around 30K.

gorgeous car!

my buddy did a full restore on a pair of 62/63 caddies:
http://dmcnarry.shawwebspace.ca/photos/view/1962_cadillac_fuel_injection_bui/

being that the motor and the car itself was rather rare, to do the mega squirt FI conversion, he had to make/hand roll his own intake manifold

but all and all one of the most important things to his moderanization was steering, suspension and most importantly: disc brakes :D

nothing wrong with your Rims at all.. as you can see, that style wears well even on a vintage Caddy :D

my favorite wheels are centerline style... especially on 1st gen mustangs

Degreeves should be able to match that carpet. If you build a box or something over it and have it covered, it would look just fine matched with the carpet thats in there.

Thanks for that company name. I will have to check them out as I think covering a box in carpet would be the only way to hide it somewhat nicely. I had no idea there was a company like that around.

For the most part leaving it as it, but we will see once I get a chance to drive it. The heater doesn't really seem to work, so that will need some work. I imagine I will want to tinker with the engine and some performance parts next year. I really wanted a standard as I think a muscle car should be a standard, but I don't see that happening for a couple of years if at all.

We shall see. For now I just want to enjoy it this summer, so if anything is done it will probably be this winter.

I paid $20,000 and the shipping cost me $580.00 from Vernon. I ended up finding a shipper who was going through Vernon on Uship.com. I was a little leary about using a shipper on that site, but he was enclosed, and only hauling my car, so I took a chance. TFX wasn't really committing to actually showing up, so I thought I would try it out, and it did go as planned which was good. I don't think could have driven out there with a rented trailer for that cost. The gas alone would have been around $400 plus 14-20 hours of driving depending on the roads.

Thanks. I do too. I looked at a few numbers matching cars, and while that is cool to be a totally original car i'm not from that era, and that didn't really matter to me. I have loved the look of the 65-68 style coupes since I was a kid. I really wanted the look and some muscle behind it as well. The guages added something a little bit different to set it apart which I thought gave it a bit more character. As I said I don't really like the look of the cd player in the car, but I can figure out if I want to bother changing that or not.
