I am putting on my second private rum tasting in March, and was wondering if any beyonders have suggestions or contacts to buy from. Or work at local stores that would not mind spending an hour or two talking about rum. Last year we purchased from Willow Park but I am now thinking other stores might have betters selections. Here is what we did last year:
Flor de Cana – 18 Year Old – Centenario Gold, Admiral Rodney, Clement – Premiere Canne, Mount Gay 1703 – Old Cask Selection, Zaya Gran Reserva and Zaya Gran Reserva
I am big on variety and love trying new types of rum from all over the globe. This year we plan on doing 10-15 different ones. Also open to any unique rums you might have tried and would recommend.
Thanks

my go-to has always been Havana Club. Make sure it's the real cuban stuff, not the US market variety that's made in Peurto Rico, as it's not the same.

Iv'e had some of the Zaya Gran Reserva as well, and it's excellent.

Great timing, I have a rum-related question.

Personally, I hate it and only choose to drink it when everything else has run dry. My boss on the other hand, loves the occassional high-end rum.

I'll be down in Vegas in March so I figured I should pick up something awesome in the world of rum down there to bring home. Something that can't be easily obtained here (which is a lot of things in SK lol).

What is a kick-ass high-end rum that would make a rum lover excited? Willing to spend up to $200 or so for a bottle.

Just because its expensive doesn'e mean its the best!!

Havana Club dark rum has to be one of the best... I'm sure you could spend a pretty penny on the older stuff.

In regards to OP's question, call up Crowfoot Liquor at their main branch. Awesome staff and knowledgeable.

^

I understand but, as a thank you token, I want something not "run of the mill" if you know what I mean. Something you typically can't walk to your local liquor vendor and buy whenever you want.

(sorry for derailing OP, just figured no point starting a secondary rum topic)

Anyone seen "Chairman's Reserve" in town? It's a St.Lucia Rum. I finished off my bottle last month that I had been rationing for years.

Try Dictador 12 Year Solera. Its at Coop stores and I think Willow Park. For some reviews and notes, I've been reading the Rum Howler Blog (google it).. Edmonton enthusiast that seems to get to taste all the new stuff.

That's an awesome website, thanks. Time to do some driving.

Any other recommendations for a guy who likes smooth amber run and drinks so little it doesn't matter how expensive it is? Not a fan of anything spiced.

My favourite rum right now is Rum Nation Ron Millonario XO

http://www.whiskyantique.com/dati/immagini/ron-millonario-70cl-40-xo_IM130753.jpg

I'm on my second bottle.

Bought it at Kensington Wine Market but it should be available at other stores. Though Kensington has a pretty good selection of other rums as well. Rum Nation bottles some exclusive and interesting rums.

I saw a $250 bottle of some sort @ the Liquor Depot in Brentwood. They had a massive selection.

Found my old favourite @ the co-op downtown, but it doesn't taste as good as I thought. Probably because I've been drinking Zaya 12 year stuff in the meantime and it's definitely smoother.
