I work way out of town on a first nations reserve. There's dogs everywhere out there and often times they're neglected, abused, or let go stray. We were driving way out in the boonies when this little guy appeared in the middle of the road just chilling. We pulled over and noticed that while he was really friendly, he was pretty skinny and obviously had been stray for a while. We grabbed him and brought him back to our station and we have been taking care of him for a couple days now.

I just got back into Calgary and got him into my house. He's definitely well adjusted and would make an awesome pet for someone who is willing to put the time and effort into raising him. We've been slowly introducing him to puppy food and he guns it down like it owes him money. He's clearly a mix of a couple breeds. Awesome temperament, doesn't whine much, responds to simple calls but is otherwise completely untrained. I'd wager good money he has never had any shots, and judging by a short bout of diarrhea he had last night he probably has some sort of worms or some other puppy ailment. He's clearly been living outdoors his whole life and isn't housebroken, but I've been taking him outside when he gets restless and he does his business there and calmly walks back in so shouldn't be too hard to train.

So I'm looking for a home for him, or possibly some advice as to a good puppy rescue society that could take him in and find owners.

For anyone interested, know that while reserve dogs can make awesome pets, there's a little more work involved in training and it will inevitably cost some money to get him up to perfect health. If I didn't already have a dog from this same reserve, I'd keep this little guy for sure. It'll be a challenge but he's an awesome dog and would definitely make a great pet.

PM me if you want any more info. I'll be kinda choosy as to who I give him to. If I think you're going to be a shitty owner, I'm not going to give him to you.

He's some sort of mutt. Looks like a bit of Shepherd in him but who knows.

We have a reserve dog like that.. she's grown into an awesome dog. Mostly seem to be lab/shep/bullbreed crosses. Pretty damn easy to train as she's highly food/people oriented. I'm pretty sure our dog remembers life before us, and is grateful.

Totally. I've had mine for a couple years now and he's an awesome dog. This little guy will be going to a rescue society in the next couple hours though. My current reserve dog HATES him and goes bananas whenever I'm around the pup. I've never seen the guy get jealous like that before. I'll update when I find him a shelter if any of you are still interested

Anyone know the best rescue society? Preferably one that deals with native reserve dogs. No kill policy.

Cool, glad to hear. I sent him a PM with contact number so he can get in touch with me anytime. Anyone else who may be interested, let me know and we can arrange a time to get together.

I'm amazed people find LIVING dogs on reserves, heard so many horror stories. My parents dog was a reserve dog that they picked up at the pound, pretty obvious she was abused at how scared she is of so many things, but shes incrediably adorable and non-aggressive.

Hey guys, I called up a bunch of places and was told that there's a ridiculously high rate of parvo virus on these reserves. Parvo is highly contagious and really deadly among puppes or dogs with weaker immune systems. After talking to a few of them, we decided best course of action was to keep the little guy quarantined at the shelter from other dogs for a few days until he can get a full vet checkup and his vaccinations. I just dropped the pup and a small donation off at the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society shelter in the NE. This shelter then goes ahead and places the pup with a foster family until he gets adopted. If anyone is still interested, keep an eye on http://aarcs.ca/ in the next couple weeks when he goes up for adoption.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Sorry I couldn't do any meet and greets but with those circumstances and me leaving out of town for a week this was the best way to go about it. Hope he goes to a good home, was a super friendly dog and was fun to take care of for the last few days.

You did what you could, and with him being a pup he'll likely get adopted very quickly! :) Hope he goes to a great home

good on you for picking him up, you most likely saved that dogs life and at the very least gave him a new lease on life!
such a cute little guy - wish i had room but I've already got ~165lbs of dog at home.
