Hey guys, my cousin is in the market for a new stereo and she asked for my help, I honestly dont know much about Receivers, so I need some help.
she is not here in Canada and can only buy from amazon, and her budget is 100$. I already told her she wont be getting something great and she was already aware of that.
so what would be the best deal for that price range? or what should I look for in a good receiver? or brands to avoid?

here is the link of what I was looking at:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_p_36_2?rh=n%3A172282%2Cn%3A%21493964%2Cn%3A3248684011%2Cn%3A1077068%2Cn%3A226184%2Cn%3A10980601%2Cp_36%3A1253505011&bbn=10980601&sort=-price&ie=UTF8&qid=1363032343&rnid=386442011

Thanks in advance

$100 wont get you far. You will need supporting hardware that could in itself be more than $100 if you require an interface.

She needs to ask herself what she is looking to gain (ie. certain functions, new technology support like an ipod, or just replace a broken unit) and it would also help to know what it is going into. Newish cars may have an OEM upgrade you could find on ebay or wreckers.

she has a shitty car with shitty speakers, she basically wants something simple that supports USB, back in the day I remember being told that all SONY audio stuff are really bad, is that true?

^ Sony isn't bad, but if she insists on only buying new, AND having a USB interface, she'll likely end up with some absolute shit brand thats just garbage really.

If her budget was $180 or $200, I'd be much more inclined to make some decent suggestions.
but with $100, that really wont get you much, leave alone if it actually has a USB interface.

There are plenty of half decent CD/usb decks for around 100, jvc and pioneer are my favorite and they will have usb and CD mp3 functionality. They sell for 50$ up, so stick to brands as such and personally steer away from dual and pyramid and such. I have had next to no problems with pioneer jvc/Kenwood and clarion. Personally have had lemons with Sony's recievers and speakers before, but they make a damn good game console lol. I haveBeen in the game for 13 years and still love electronics. Also, if her car is newer or uses a stock deck still it may need special mount and wiring adapter kit. So be aware of possible extra costs. Hope that helps ! Cheers.

Maybe look into the JVC "media receiver" line of products of which there is USB input but no CD player (saves some cost that way). Who uses CDs these days anyways. I got one for about $100 on sale with bluetooth and dual USB ports.
