More of a collector piece but these things have crazy off road capabilities. You have something to drive through this will drive through it. Its not for the off to Mclean Creek Off Road crowd its for the Moab take on the desert crowd.

I drove a brand new one back in 05. The sticker then was just a shade under $300,000, amazing capabilities don't come cheap and these things don't deprieciate like a hyundai.

That is awesome :D

Although I'd be kind of leery since it only has 16k kms and has a new transmission in it? I thought "monster" trucks like the Unimog could live forever through almost any abuse?

There is also this one (http://alberta.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-cars-trucks-1988-Mercedes-Benz-Unimog-U1300L-RW1-W0QQAdIdZ445154579) for sale. I remember it being featured in an article a while back but I can't find the link.

Some should grab a screencap while the ad is still up.

A few companies in town run them as plow and tow rigs.

$58,000 seems reasonable considering in what decent shape it appears to be in. Ive seen the wheels for sale at $2,000 a set so they are not cheap.

I would still love to own one though.

One guy in town that does excavation work for my dad/uncles company drives a white one from the early 2000's IIRC. He's got a dump box on it that can dump off either side, or the back. He tows his mini track hoe on a trailer with it as well. Its bad ass, I don't have pics handy though.

If you're learning how to drive one of these without any sort of training then it's really easy to toast the tranny. Especially if you're one of the guys that flat out refuses to use the clutch except from a dead stop.

You would have to be mildly retarded to buy that as a personal vehicle.

I've seen a lot of them in remote areas used as fuel delivery trucks.

There aren't many options out there for good vehicles that can go off-road and still have tires. Compared to their tracked counterparts these are pretty cheap. $60,000 for a work specific truck isn't bad at all.

I know the owner of ERE logistics and they provide remote services for oilfield. Including this bridge truck. $60k for a truck tailored for that work is pretty cheap considering the possible charge out rates.

My buddy back a long time ago used to import their "differentials" since they don't have a traditional pumpkin, so they give awesome ground clearance.

Stuck a pair in his offroad truck with big block ford power and destroyed the rear axle/gear assembly lol.

That one's a little old, and doesn't look like it has the high speed gears. The older ones were more like tractors than trucks.

How so? What with start-up costs that would easily exceed $50k if not $100k coupled with cheap ass land owners who would either cut their own or just let it grow, please explain the business proposal that would make a ton of money using the above setup.

In Calgary, mowing the lawns of your average homeowner? Nah probably not the best bet.

Secure a few commercial contracts in a part of the world where lawn care is required 365 days a year? Different story. Shit even here in Canada there are plenty of large companies that have extremely lucrative contracts with different Provincial entities for the maintenance of various highways, not the least of which is the Trans Canada. I know I've seen very similar rigs operating along the shoulder of the Trans Canada, doing nothing more than cutting wild grass, those rigs are usually a backhoe type vehicle with a mower attachment, I can't imagine those things go for much less than a $100k.

mogs are nuts... no way anyone requires one as a personal vehicle, but I've seen these things in action, and have even seen a vintage short wheelbase mid-70's one extract a front end loader, that was attempting to extract a jacked up 3/4ton ford

Really in North America, other than 3/4 ton trucks and up, the TLC, Wrangler and the G Wagon, there is no other options for a "real" off road articulating 4x4, and even at that, I'd choose a short wheelbase solid front/rear axel SUV over a truck anyday

I'd love to get my hands on a modern day defender:

Unimogs are sick. I saw a video somewhere of one pulling a Mil-Spec Humvee out of a gorge.
