Yeah, you guys can call me Grahampa. I bought a Buick

(^ sorry for the shitty Iphone pics).

Its the GS, so the highest model you can go.
Factory 20's with HID, 14" Brembro brakes & the turbo (270hp/295tq) 2.0L 4 banger & 6speed manual, Pirelli P-zero tires.
^ re-read that sentence then let it sink in thats standard equipment on a...... wait for it...... Buick.
It was too good a deal to pass up, almost a new car for $28k
http://www.shaganappi.com/new/Buick/2012-Buick-Regal-10774c380a0d06490164db484c0cb12a.htm

Fully loaded except for Nav. I was at the auto & truck show with my bro yesterday, and checked this out. It was quite a nice car really.... so this guy was saying that Shaganappi has two demo's their selling for $30k. (which is $15k off MSRP, being $46k plus everything else above that) So right after work I went there, and took it for a good boot. It was quite a nice car actually, I was very impressed.... so I offered them a bit less, and now Im an old man!

Im stoked. I'll pick it up in a few days.

grats man, I always liked buicks, they are pretty comfy, and for awhile there, they were doing direct comparisons on the interiors versus lexus and BMW.

nice score old man!

But the real question is, how easy is storing your walker in it?

digi355
03-15-2013, 06:38 PM
All you need is a Harley.

Graham_A_M
03-15-2013, 06:41 PM
^ Dont even get me started on Harley's.... good god. :banghead:

Yeah, the main reason for the upgrade was for the ease of putting my walker in the trunk. Even with the tennis balls on the front feet, I've scratched up my old car's trunk area too many times to count..... but then again perhaps the cataracts may have contributed to that.

^ Yeah, problem is, when you say "I have a Buick" they'll say something to the affect of
" Sorry sir, all the mods we make for that car are bi-focal holders, viagra dispensers, or an 8 track player"

Its like... fuck, why even bother asking?
Im really not expecting there to be much of a performance part offering for it.
:dunno:
We'll see. Its still quite a new car, so perhaps more will come later.

Its definitely decent just the way it is, so Im not too worried.

Those are definitely very nice cars. Every time one comes through the shop for a PDI I make sure to grab the keys and do it myself.

Best part for me on those cars is the cold start turbo spool followed by the Bypass valve sound... Call me juvenile but it sounds purdy.

Good luck.

If you want some GM accesories hit me up, I'll get you cost + 10%

It is to me. I've never had a single break down ever, in all the 7 or 8 cars and trucks I've owned, including my old '84 S10 with 842,000 kms on it. :dunno: Same with my (much former DD) '99 Saturn SL2 with 340,000 km's on it thats been in my family since new. They've all been nothing short of amazing, regardless of how badly abused they were.

Jesse, yeah I traded in the '07 Saturn Aura XR. That was a very decent car, but this is much nicer.

Thanks Rick, I'll definitely PM you if I need anything! I really appreciate that. :)

Oh man! I was just looking at that car a few weeks back thinking what a great deal it was, I love the GS regal and theyre hard to find with the stick.

What most people don't know is that is not really a Buick at all but an european Opel Insignia which has won a shitload of awards. It's just too bad Buick didn't bring the V6 AWD Insignia OPC here.

Nice nice car! Congrats!

^ Yeah man, I've yet to read a single bad thing about it. I did some research when I got home from the auto show last night, and I knew that this was a smokin' deal. You're getting one fuckin' hell of a car for $29k.

Ill miss the Saturn, but this is so much nicer. :D

These guys are charging a fortune, yet their warranty started the day they bought them. Most stealerships with these cars are asking at LEAST $35k for them used. :nut:

hahaha, I have yet to find out. I didn't even know about the "sport" mode or the "GS" mode until after the test ride. Fuck man, that car was fast enough in traffic as is, I can't wait to see what those buttons do. Apparently those modes sharpen the steering a fair bit and stiffin' up the suspension. I haven't tried either yet though, it was fast enough just dorkin' around with those modes off. This car is going to be a fucking blast.

^ Thats exactly what I did. After checking it out, I was thinking "Man I really want one of these". Then some random guy that was also checking out the car told me Shaginappi had two of them as demo's for $29k.
I checked it out online later that day (Thursday) then Friday I decided to stop by after work and pick one up.
Unfortunately I have the last demo they had. The other one sold before I got there.
So if you're serious, I'd check out other dealers to see if they have any more demo's. Otherwise if you buy a brand spanking new 2013, it'll be $46k. :(

Haggis88, yeah my old DD ('07 Saturn Aura XR) is just a rebadged Opel Astra I think it is. I don't know too much about the foreign brandings though as Im not from Aussieland or Europe.

Too bad, the Insignia version of this car has AWD and an optional diesel. Both would be a $10k add on though, and not available here in NA.
I dont much care about a heavy ass diesel, but the AWD would be amazing.

Yea I need to assess the financials. I have a wedding coming up soon to pay for and I intend to pay for it without going into debt to do so. We've been putting aside $1.5k/mo for the last five months for it but I need to figure out if I can move into a new vehicle like this without impeding my debt repayment/wedding savings situation.

The interior on that Buick is something else, though. Way above what I saw from other manufacturers...

I love the regal's  . Never considered it as an "old man" car, have loved them since I saw them in the 81-83 nascar races on tv as a kid. I had a couple models of them too hehe. Fav body style is the 78-87 when they were primarily 2 door coupes. Gen 3 coupes were beautiful too. Goddamn I love the Regals. Your gen 5 is beautiful for sure, congrats again!!!

On that link to Shaginappi in my OP, you have that Payment % down deposit calculator.
Hmmm... with a fairly decent trade in of $7k, Its barely $500/month. But mind you mine was $29k
You may want to check this one out.

2012 with 25kms for $36k its optioned just like mine. Way the hell up in Grande Prairie though.

I wish I could say the same. 2 trucks, and 1 van, less than 240000 kms combined, over $3000 in repairs annually (per vehicle).

Worst offender: Have gone through no less than 5 drivers door handles and 3 tail gate handles on one single truck in 4 years of use.

Which vehicles were they? I know an H3 was one of them.
Thats too bad man.... My whole family has had wicked luck with GM.
We have these grain trucks at our farm from the late 70's (C65's). Their only rated for 3 tons, yet we load them up with 12 tons in their grain box very (VERY) regularly, and they just take it and take it and take it, since new. Thats fine and all, but then you factor in all the shit of being driven on very soft, rutted farm land, laden with gopher holes, and it gets nutty really.
Still no break downs at all. Its just been the odd item like starters or brakes, thats it.

I think on all the GM vehicles my family has owned since the mid 70's, we've spent all of $2k on repairs. Not bad for about 1,000,000kms worth of driving with all of them. Err sorry, all 20 or so of them.
Dont get me wrong, with Oldsmobile, you're fucking stupid if you'd ever want to touch one, but with Chevy, Pontiac, Buick, Saturn & GM (etc) its been great.
Its frustrating. Oldsmobile have always been GM's guinea pig. When ever Gm has an idiotic idea they want to try out, they release it in the Olds brand. My co-worker had a silhouette mini-van. Take a wild guess how much it was to replace the factory front brakes? $2200. The rotors had sensors in them to tell the ECU how much life they had. Problem is, those cost about $700 a piece. So it doesn't surprise me that they cut Olds.
Olds was definitely an old mans car that no one wanted after the muscle car era. I'd never touch one:nut:

Do you reside in the community titled 'Forest Lawn'?

I come from a family too of Chevy drivers, and none of which have really had serious issues to note (some wear and tear of course though).
Grandpa's a farmer too with a trucking fleet of Chev's (aside from farm equip and his Mack), but his main 'farmers hand' truck has been in operation since i was a little guy haha...
I drove it last summer and (while its a little beat up, again, running like a bro.)

When I first bought the Optima there were ZERO mods for it. Eventually they crept into the scene a little bit. Still pretty sparse compared to others (BRZ, for example).

What's with GM putting the gas tank access on the passenger side? 100% of the time the driver is the one fuelling it up.

Well since the insignia has it, I don't get why not, especially at $43k. The insignia vxr has a 2.8 L V6 turbo though instead of this 2.0, but it is still available in non vxr with AWD.

All European cars are designed like that because the driver is on the right side. (Solely referring to the Buick/Opel Regal)

I haven't tried either yet though, it was fast enough just dorkin' around with those modes off. This car is going to be a fucking blast.

Great car. My brother worked at Shag previously and had one as a demo for 2 months. Silver GS model and it was the best GM car I had driven in a long time. Congrats!

That's a good looking car and hell-of-a lot performance in a Buick. GM really has stepped their game up it seems. The CTS-V is still something I would like to drive.

What's with GM putting the gas tank access on the passenger side? 100% of the time the driver is the one fuelling it up.

It's so at a tight set of pumps you don't have anything in the way of your door when you get out. I hate driver side fuel doors.

What about Japanese ones? They're on the left side. I naturally assumed it based on positioning of the driver's seat.

Um no.... thats a given. For exterior mods, perhaps lowered a bit (we'll see about that) and a silver mesh grill.... thats seriously it.

Actually I love it being on the passenger side. My current DD has it there as well, and its great pulling up to the pumps since nobody uses that lane, since with most cars its on the drivers side.
There is practically never a line up on the one-way "rows".

Well since the insignia has it, I don't get why not, especially at $43k. The insignia vxr has a 2.8 L V6 turbo though instead of this 2.0, but it is still available in non vxr with AWD.
That would sell quite well over here.... I really wish AWD was an option. :( Leave alone with that for an engine.

I thought they are on the driver side so they can use less wire to the mechanical release.

You beat me to it corsvette.

Definitely check out Trifecta it's an amazing tune and it really wakes up the 2.0L Turbo LNF EcoTec motor in your car. I had a Trifecta tune on my old Cobalt SS Turbo (same motor) and with just a downpipe and a conservative tune I put down 290WHP & 320WTQ on Tecmotions dyno. And best of all the tune is a stealth tune so when you go into dealerships and the Tech's plug in their TechII tools the car doesn't show up as tuned ;) PM me if you want more information.

Congrats on the car, love the GS

Solid dude. I'm excited for this car for you.

My fiance should be worried... her Vibe will be on the chopping block, she can have the Optima, and I'll grab a Regal. Win/win for everybody, right? ;)

^ Thats when I first got it. Its come a *LONG* ways since, but still have a ways to go. Im almost done remaking the new rear fenders. The old stock ones were cut out for some idiotic reason, as you may be able to tell. So I had to form new ones that are 3" wider. I hope to have it done this late summer or fall some time.
Im into it for a good chunk of change & time, thats for sure. :nut:

^ I dont know WTF that is, but its far from a GS. The rims, the lack of a spoiler and the exhaust give it away its just a base model Regal.

I already put 300km's of city driving on it. It took a while to get used to driving a manual again... Made some very stupid mistakes while trying to parallel park it etc. :banghead:
I already went for a rip with A790 (Cam) he seemed to really like it. So it will be cool when he gets one as well.

Overall Shaganappi was a very good dealership to go through, I was quite happy with them on all accounts, minus their proposed trade in values. They didn't fix some of the heat shielding that was coming loose on the underside of the hood (where the turbo is located) so I have to come back early next week, but all in all I was quite happy with them. Probably the nicest dealership I've ever been in as well. Its VERY nice inside, all the sales staff were quite decent.

So far Im just loving it. Its quite a fun car, very well appointed and decently quick as that turbo starts to spool at 1300rpm plus.
Handles very well for what it is. Most people have to do two or three takes..... "WTF..... BUICK???!!!!" their probably thinking hahaha.

Its very easy to speed in it. Its so quiet you honestly dont notice any speed until you look down, when I did I noticed I was doing 135 on deerfoot (whoops hahaha). I wish the engine was a bit louder though, unless you're eye-balling the tach, its easy to either over-rev the engine or lug it, Even with the radio down low. Perhaps since its such a new car though, it'll take some getting used to.

I wish it had the same stereo loudness as my old Saturn though, with the factory 6.5's & 6X9's in the back it would shake the mirrors quite easily. This cant get nearly as loud, despite being the Harmon Kardon sound system.
Despite being a Buick, my Euro-loving best friend just loves it though, he really liked the fact that it was originally made in Germany under the Opel Insignia badging. :D
Fuck me I wish it had the 340hp 2.8L V6 Turbo with AWD. :(
That would be just epic as a 6speed manual. Unfortunately we get shafted on SO many amazing cars though...

Yea dude it's a good ride. Very impressed with the suspension in GS mode and the staunch difference between it and regular driving. Smooth pickup, lots of torque. Car always felt planted and was never far from power.

It's a solid ride. Time for me to get one :)

Time for a bump. In the market for a car and this is on my short list. Now that you've had it a couple months would you still say it is a good car for a daily driver? If anybody is looking to unload one feel free to shoot me a PM.

i've reserved my rental for going back to the UK next month, and it's one of these (well, an Insignia) with a 2.0CDTi

it won't be a patch on this, i just hope it's comfortable! I've never been able to get on with GM's UK offerings when driving them (Vauxhall Corsa and Astra)

^ none at all. Just decently fast, Im loving it, during stampede it was getting a good share of attention, a lot more so then it usually does. Which is kind of cool hahaha. A buddy of mine in my condo has a cobalt SS that's been we'll modded and tuned, but he's up to the high 300hp with his. That's more then I want, but I'd be happy with 330-340hp. He gave me the number of the Trifecta performance rep for Calgary, so I'll be seeing him this week and we'll go from there.

Pm me if you want to check it out this evening or early in the week. I'm heading back to the C dot as I write this. I should be there around supper time. Also, if you want a manual, check other dealerships as well. A month ago, Fort Mac had a GS (manual) from their GM dealership as a demo, priced under $30k, they may still have it, it's the same as mine, 20" 's, black but with Nav. But keep looking before settling an auto, which I'd almost not recommend.

Thanks for the offer Graham but I'll head up to the dealership to take a spin. I've found a private one in Red Deer and a dealer one in Olds as well. I was unable to locate that one in Fort Mac.
