I'm looking to pick up newer used car that I can hopefully rely on for a few years. Style and brand doesn't really matter, this purchase is all about utility.

What would beyond recommend I look into?

Should I still be scared of KIA?

If your sole interest is A-to-B transportation without a sporty ride, something like a Hyundai or Kia is an excellent brand to consider. Their quality is now every bit on par with the competition, and you generally get a "nicer" car for the money with the Korean brands.

But to get suggestions, you really need to mention what is important to you in a vehicle, and what kind of lifestyle you have.

New gen Ford Fiesta would be my recommendation for newish hatchback around ten grand.

If you're willing to go a little older/higher K you could get something like a G35 for about that, easy.

2006+ Civic. Crazy good on gas, won't cost you anything, and cheap to repair if you need to.

Or anything similar- you have quite a few options if you don't really care.

You can lease a 2013 Jetta for $167/mo - not sure if that deal is still on.

I just got job transferred and need a quick sale on my 2005 PWP Acura RSX Type-S, 155,000km comes with 2 sets of wheels and tires (winter/summer). Was going to post it for around your asking price, I'm sure we could negotiate something if you are interested. PM me if that is the case.

I think the consensus here is that if you don't need the extra space or doors, a hatchback is the way to go.

And they are all good suggestions. Ford has come a long way and the Fiesta is a real decent car for what it is.... as is the Mazda 2. (I'm basing this on what I've read). I have driven the Fit and Civic, and it was as has been mentioned the Fit is a surprisingly fun little city vehicle. And while the quality of the 2 and the Fiesta is pretty good now, there's still something about having the Honda name behind you with either the Fit or Civic.

My wife has an '08 Accent which is something like you could pick up for about half your budget if you wanted to save some money. Though underpowered and pretty unrefined, it handles decently and isn't uncomfortable.

My brother may sell an 02 RSX for $10k or less. It's in great shape and <120k kms.

Buy a year or 2 old Hyundai and Kia. You get balance of warranty bumper to bumper.

As hatch goes, Focus, Fit get my vote. Stay away from Versa.

I also have a RSX (type S) for sale if you're interested. It's on this site but I won't post the link here in case that's considered spam. PM if interested. $9000, 2002, 175k, Milano red, light mods

Anyway, when I was selling a set of rims off of it, I was able to fold only one side down of the rear seats and get ALL FOUR rims on the other side neatly tucked away, and then closed the trunk. So I had 4 17'' rims with rubber on one side, and still had room for me, two passengers, and loads of luggage! I love hatchbacks. As Kloubek said, if you don't mind two doors but want guaranteed practicality, hatchbacks are your best bet. In two door guise, I always surprise people with what can be hauled around. I could even sleep back there if I wanted to. It's too bad there aren't any RWD ones out there anymore :(

Thank you for the advice and links everyone. I've been looking for a little while already, I just wanted to see any other ideas.

I'm very intrested in the RIO I was talking about and I wanted to see what beyonds thinks of the vehicle I'm considering buying in the next few days.

It is a 2011 KIA Rio5 with 50K on the dot for $9'900. The biggest seller for this vehicle for me is that it the price tag is about what I want and the car still has 50'000k and/or 4 years left on the bumper to bumper warrenty.

At 50k you'd only be wasting time/money.

Won't be any leaks at that mileage, if there are, it's warranty. Some vehicles are awful on brakes but imports tend to go 80-100k on factory front pads. The only fluids that need to be changed up until that mileage is oil.

Any work the car might have needed, the used car tech would have tried to sell to the used car department.

The Rio is almost identical to the Hyundai Accent I mentioned earlier. Expect a bare-bones vehicle without a lot of power but a fair amount of engine noise. Everything is hard plastic inside. It is about as basic of a vehicle as they offer these days - but it isn't really bad as a commuter which seems to be pretty reliable.

A car enthusiast would probably hate it. But given your price range and the fact you still have tons of warranty left, I don't think that's a bad choice.

I bought an Elantra (just needed A to B vehicle) , no regrets. was nicer than any of the other choices in my price range - came with bluetooth, heated seats and cruise control - was looking at a few other cars (sentra, focus, civic) and all those features in the other cars put them roughly $3000-$5000 more.

Also got a better warranty with Hyundai than the others offered , excellent gas mileage and the fit and finish - while still cheap plastic - looks sharper (imo) than most of the competitors.

For the record to the OP, we lowered the price on that Corolla. So $10k OBO now. I think you'd enjoy that a lot more then the Rio. Especially considering its a manual.

My vote is for the Fit. My brother owns one and loves it, bought new in 2007 and has never had an issue. I`ve borrowed it and it`s also tons of fun to drive and the amount of space it has is crazy, especially head room, I`m 6ft and still 6 inches from the ceiling.
