View Full Version : Where to buy metal spur gear set?

I'm working on a DIY project and require a complete spur gear assembly. I'm looking for metal components, however the particular metal is not important. Is there anyone in Calgary that sells something like this?

I would prefer a store where I can try different size combinations to see what specifically works for my application.

If you are experimenting, a bicycle cassette would be cheap and easy, otherwise use your maths to find the speed you need beforehand. Princess Auto may have a mix of parts or TSL certainly will but not for cheap.

Thanks for the suggestions. Princess Auto only carries sprockets and pulley systems, I already checked them out. TSL is over my budget since I'm not using them for an actual repair.

The gears don't need to be new or even in great shape, just be part of a single assembly.

How much torque do you plan to run through it? Little workbench hobby size or a typical 1/2 hp electric motor. More specifics would help.

I have lots of nitro RC truck spur gear / transmission parts. I also ripped apart an old 18v Milwaukee drill and it had a few steel spur gears and 4 planetary gear sets.

What I'm looking to do is build an industrial version of this coffee table:

I haven't calculated the torque requirements but based on the weight of the table components, if I end up putting a motor on it, it will likely require more power than an RC motor. There are a few small cheapo 1/2 hp motors at Princess Auto that I think may work depending on the RPMs.

I may also just leave it as a manual crank.
