I maximize my employer contributions to RRSP, and have been thinking I should reallocate it to something like 40% S&P index, 40% Smallcap index, and 20% REIT's. IMO, for a personal investor on a 30-40 year time frame, the S&P is conservative enough that bonds aren't worth bothering (obviously that could change, but thats why you've got to pay attention)

There are many mutual funds that will help you with the 60/40% split.

But I still like the idea of bond/cash portion to match your age. IE if you're 30, do 70/30.

You mean bond/equity? And don't you have your numbers backwards?

If you're 30 you'd want 30/70 bond/equity. 40 - 40/60. 50 - 50/50. You want to reduce risk and have more fixed income assets as you age.

Carpe diem.

Psshhh, why worry about the future. You never know if you might become Chavez (and not see 60) or Kim Jong Un nukes the city you are in, or Rob Anders finally shows his true self and implodes taking down everyone with him.

I'm with Obama on that, now is the time to spend what ya got before you can't spend it at all. Save, but know what to save in - nickels mainly.

If you have saved $25,000 before retirement you have already beat 57% of americans. But that only fiat dollars of course. Anyone from the 1940's will be able to retell the story of silver at 35 cents per ounce (now $28 per ounce). Will you be telling your grandkids about the day that nickel was 55 cents per ounce?

I forgot where i read it but that if your total worth after all debt is $5, you are richer than 40% of Americans.

Ok, not as bad as I first read it.

https://appam.confex.com/data/extendedabstract/appam/2012/Paper_2134_extendedabstract_151_0.pdf

TLDR:

2010:
% of Americans with
0 or negative net worth: 22.5%
<$5000: 33.5%
<$10K: 37.1%

So if you have $1 and no debt, you are better off than almost 1/4 of Americans.
