So according to the dealer its going to cost me $200 for a new key for my 2005 Pontiac Montana. Does anyone know if there is a way to just get my own key and program it myself?

If not I just gotta hope I don't lose the one key I have

That's for a key fob, I need to get a new key cut/ programmed and hopefully not pay $200 for it

I can't remember which locksmith I went to, but it was $95 to cut and program a key for our Montana van. Another $50 for keyless.

Just call around, most places will be able to do it for a lot cheaper than a dealership.

Another option is to buy a blank with chip from eBay, have it cut at CT and program it yourself.

After digging around a little more it looks like I need two keys, in Canada, to be able to reprogram a new key.

I guess I just can't lose this key then.

If you lose that one you have to add the cost of the tow bill.

You can quick program a new key IF you already have 2 that work. Otherwise to program a new key from scratch with no old keys we would charge 1 hour of labor plus the key.

Unfortunately only have one that works

If you have one I would expect a GM dealer would change 1/2 hour plus the key, but if you have no working keys 1 hour to program is pretty standard.

I'm in the same boat with my CX9. It doesn't use keys but instead has two smart cards. If I needed to program a 3rd, I could do it myself. But only one of my cards works and to program the second requires a dealer trip and I've heard in upwards of $400.

AMA as stated earlier.

If you have no AMA, get it then the next day order a locksmith.

I thought this is common knowledge since we had chips in our keys since the late 90s.

Don't lose both. If you lose one, get a replacement right the way.

For my chipped key on Dakota most dealers were wanting over $200 then big 4 did it for $75
