Just wondering for those who have engagement rings, did you have it insured and if so, how do you go about doing this? Do you just call your home insurance? Also, do you need to get it appraised at a specific place?

Home insurers charge an arm and a fucking leg for specific items (like jewellery). I think it would have added another $85 a month to our policy if I wanted my wife's ring covered. They never asked for an appraisal though, I think a receipt would have sufficed.

You will require an appraisal. I obtained it at no charge from the place I bought the ring.

Some stores insure the diamond for free provided you purchase it there, and have the setting/claws inspected at regular intervals of their choosing (usually 6 months).

An appraisal should be easy to get from just about any authorized place.

$85/month? That's got to be a mistake. Probably $85/year unless the ring is worth over $50k.

Lol, not even close. I was blown away by how much it would have cost me. Thinking about it, maybe the girl on the phone just misheard how much I said the ring was worth though?

It'll depend on your home insurance policy. If the value of the piece is higher then whats included on your policy, I believe you'll need a rider on it.
The place where you purchased the ring from should provide you with an appraisal for free. The appraisal value will always be way higher then what you paid, talk to your insurance company to determine what value it should be covered under.

That $85 sounds like a per-year number to me unless the person on the phone completely misunderstood you. No way it's $85/mo.

I think the rider for my Wifes is like $13/month added on to our house insurance. Small price to pay for security.

Had it appraised in Bridgeland...Cant remember the name of the place

Well depends on the value. I remember it was an extra $50/month with Statefarm to insure a $30k ring.

I spend nothing on jewelery insurance.

My wife would rather just have money than jewelery.

This.

My entire house insurance is $85/month with the ring included.

Times change I guess and so do priorities! Oh...the good ol days where I'd be lucky if I even remembered her name. Now, I need to only remember one name in order to get lucky!

And on a different note, can one take a ring to any jewelers and have it appraised or are there specific places to go to?

This.

Companies such as Perfect Circle offer supplementary insurance for a reasonable price.

You will require an appraisal and fill out a form asking about how often the ring is worn, where it is kept secure etc.

Troy Shoppe Jewelers?

The owner, David, has accreditation to appraise rings.

Does it count when a girl walks away with the ring? or just fire, thieft, lost?

Usually when you buy a ring doesn't it come with an appraisal? I know that was the case from Jewels by Maxime's.

The only insurance you need is to avoid getting one in the first place.

I went to http://www.intergemlabs.com/ which is also in Bridgeland and were recommended by a few higher end places when I called around. With TD MM, it around $250 or so a year. But it's peanuts when you think about losing it or having it stolen.

Nope, in that case you have to sue her for it back. It was given in the agreement of marriage, if the marriage does not take place you get the ring back. If you get married and then split right away she gets to keep it.

Someone mentioned Perfect Circle.

This is the insurer that I went with. They charged me less than what my home insurance quoted me for, and for home insurance, jewellery is only covered up to a certain amount.

My wife wasn't living with me at the time, so I chose Perfect Circle because the insurance is tied to whoever is on the policy (both of us) so when I gave her the ring, it would still be insured, whereas if i went with my home insurance, the ring would only be insured if she lived with me.

I believe the policy covers almost everything (fire, theft, mysterious disappearances), but hopefully I will never have to find out
