View Full Version : 1 bird keeps crapping on my car.

This one is strange, so I wasn't sure what forum to post it in.

My car isn't in the greatest condition, but that's no excuse for 1 single robin to shit on it on a daily basis.

For whatever reason, it likes to hang out on my side mirrors. I'm having to clean crap off my doors about three times a day.

The final straw was yesterday when did I major interior cleaning and left the windows open to air it out a bit. I come out about an hour later to find crap on the INSIDE of my door! WTF!

Needless to say, I'm looking for some solutions. Here's what I thought of so far:

1) Buy one of those plastic owls and leave it on my dash. This might work for a while, but given the tanacity of this robin, I don't think it would be long before he figured it out.

2) Leave a "live" hose just around the corner and spray the robin. Problem with this is timing and the fact that it might just think it's rain and come back anyway.

3) Some sort of remote buzzer placed on the mirrors.

Too bad I don't have a remote starter. If I did, I'd turn off the car with my stereo cranked, and then when I see the robin on the mirror... well, Rockin' Robin.

Any thoughts or other options? And no, killing it isn't an option as I love birds. Damn, just last summer I nurtered 2 baby doves and 1 baby robin back to life. That's the thanks I get lol.

Go to the SPCA and tell him about your problems

This one is saying "nurture me too, asshole" jk

Maybe something is attracting it to the mirrors specifically lol. Not sure what tho since u said u clean it which would take away any physical substance it's attracted to?

The only thing I can of is that the very first times I saw him do it, it was like he was "playing" with his reflection. Maybe he just likes his virtual buddy or is afraid of real commitment lol.

.....Because cats kill birds. Mine has taken down at least half a dozen birds so far this year.

If it was me I would just shoot it, much easier than cat ownership.

or use an air soft gun to scare it away and you won't have to worry about damaging you car:dunno:

Park your car somewhere else for a week and let him find someone else's car to shut on?

Put little spikes on the mirror so he can't perch there, or hang fishing line he won't want to get tangled in it so he'll avoid it, the owl idea is golden or just an owl sticker

Yes, some sort of noise scare seems to be the best way, but parking it in front of my house instead of my driveway is a good idea, so thanks for those suggestions.

Can bird crap wreck the paint?

^ Yes it can. Its very acidic, so you need to get it off asap.

Problem is, shooting firearms isnt exactly legal within the city limits. I have countless squirrels and ravens in some big trees near my house, and you have *NO IDEA* how much I'd love to peg them off with my 22, only I cant without having the police show up at my door within minutes.

Just looked out the Window, and for the third time this morning, I'll be cleaning off the crap again.

I'm parking it front of the house for the next week.

BTW-Good idea on the painful perch. Thanks.

This is what bb guns are for still not legal but far less noticeable, sling shots can also do the trick

Put a magent on it, stick it on your roof.

Bonus points if you stick two lasers in it's eyes, so it lights up while your driving :D

The owl sticker works very well. We had a serious problem with birds seeing the reflection of trees in our living room windows. So they'd fly full speed into the window (Thinking it was a tree) and knock themselves the fuck out.
So we put an owl sticker in the window, and they stopped doing that immediately.

So get big owl decals for the sides/roof/hood/trunk of your car and your set. Although people will think you really have a thing for owls.

owl tattoos are getting popular as well, may as well get one to help intimidate the bird while going to and from your car :dunno:

Yeah if he covers his car in owls it's only a matter of time before this malicious robin tries to roost right on the OP.

Lol.

You could be right, as this particular robin looks just like the one I nursed back to health last summer. It got to the point with that robin that I would be sitting on my deck and it would land on my chair and even my shoulder a couple of times.

so exactly like this thread (http://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/1bwyqa/this_bird_waits_for_my_coworker_to_show_up_every/)

Solution:

Ahhh, yeah that happened to my car for a while too. Talked to a family friend that's a bird expert and they explained it to me and told me how to get the bird to stop. You just have to move your car away from that area for about a week and the bird will go away.

Basically, the bird sees its reflection and assumes its another bird encroaching on its territory. So it freaks out at your mirror, basically attacking it, so that the other rival bird will go away. But because it's a bird it doesn't realize that it's a mirror and not another bird. So, if the "rival" (aka car mirror) is gone for about a week, the bird will assume the "rival" is gone for good and leave your car alone.

Welcome to my world:)

I'll park on the road for about a week and see how it goes. Although I think it lives in the trees around my house along with the dozens of other robins. If that's the case I suspect it will start doing it again once it's "rival" returns. If so, it's off to plan B.

Lol. I thought the whole thing was kind of funny to begin with, but replies like this make it even more so.

I never thought a little robin could shit that much. I'm talking strings of it at least a foot long down the doors. I guess when it's trying to fight the rival in the mirror it gets so damned worked up that it just literally "loses it's shit".

I just hope the robin doesn't get a buddy to help out by kicking ass on the OTHER mirror's reflection:)

I wonder if birds can hear ultrasonic. You could get one of those ultrasonic transmitters they sell to keep stray dogs and raccoons away.

I live on the outskirsts of Lethbridge that's surrounded by ponds and has a large bird population.

I love all animals, but espically birds. I don't want to fuck up the flock(s) with some ultrasonic confusion for one psychotic bird.

FFS, I've been living here among the birds for 6 years now, and have never had this problem until two weeks ago. Like I said, dozens of robins live around my house.

couldn't you fold your mirrors in so it doesn't see the reflection?

You could cut some cardboard to the shape of the mirrors and place it in when it is parked if it's the mirror it is drawn to.

I just saw him again on my car it's parked on the road. He was going from mirror to mirror and pecking at both the mirrors and front windows.

Looks like it's the owl decoy and decals for me.

That would be sweet. I might just do that regardless of the damn robin:)

About an hour ago I pulled the car into the driveway and taped an owl picture to each front window. It's too early to tell how effective it will be, but so far no crap.
