Garage floor

I was thinking of coating my garage floor with an epoxy. While i'm at it, i was thinking that it would be pretty cool to have a Calgary Flames logo pasted in the middle of my garage floor. I don't know how to make that happen. Any ideas?

Fairly easily...

Use one of the base / clear products, put the base down, follow directions but it's usually 72hrs between coats - have someone paint the logo with a compatible epoxy based paint, then clear over (again remembering - need to allow cure / not allow too much cure)

But think long and hard about it - how often do NHL logo's change :)

Don't those coatings typically start peeling after only a couple of years with our climate/road salt?

Depends on the product...

Typically the base/clear products do better; but are a crapton more expensive... 99% is proper surface prep, and planning (some products have specific temperature ranges and humidity needs). The stuff you find at home depot etc - isn't going to stand up, might get a year or two out of it...

Thanks for the reply. The flaming c has been there since day one and hard to imagine them changing it.

How much am i looking at for something like that Andy? I bought the quickrete epoxy from lowes hopefully that will last for a while.

Honestly, I'm trying to wrap my head around the local garage coating companies pricing... I've gotten quotes from 800-9400$ for a 20x24 garage floor- there's been almost no consistency in product, coats, application, or preparation methods...

I know the product I'm going to do my own garage floor in - is well over the price of the lowest quote... (and that doesn't include the muriatic acid, or any other prep products)

Surface Prep is the make or break of epoxy paint.

Epoxy yellows with UV exposure, it's a tough coating otherwise. Rizzo, I'll pm you with better options. I'm a concrete coatings formulation chemist, but won't advertise the company to adhere to the spirit of beyond.

That's a huge price range. If you're a DIY'er and the slab is is great condition, you can coat it for $200-$400 with a really good coating (edit: the most stable and robust coating available from a manufacturer in Canada) . If there are low points or delamination on the slab, tack on another $150 or so to properly repair it. What sort of prep is needed? Is it dust and oil free?

If you're artistic enough, and good with some painters tape, and have 3 free days off from work, the cost of materials would be about $450 for a coating that will last ~12 years.

Proper prep is the biggest thing you need to worry about.

If you want a coloured pattern, something like Racedeck is probably the easiest way to go. Not the cheapest - my garage is about the same sqft as yours and after researching different flooring options I decided I'd better just learn to love concrete. :rofl:

:werd: Fancy floors are for people who don't actually work on their cars anyways. No matter how good the coating, you'll end up scraping and scratching it anyways, then it'll look ugly as hell.

Well, that's just not true. If you spend enough, you can get a tough one. My dad's had his epoxy garage floor for a while now - going on ten years - and we both do lots of work in there. When you clean it, it looks like new. It was not cheap at all though.

Steer clear of the race deck. Biggest regret about the garage. It's durable, but remember any oil or fluids that you get on it will leak underneath and could sit there for years. Also, on a sunny day with the doors open, the floor will actually warp and start to lift as it expands and contracts in different places.

I didn't do this myself, I hired Ultimate Garage to go it. It sure looked painful because they had to use a grinder to grind the foundation walls and floor smooth. The they put some urethane type of thing in all the cracks and crevices. It was totally water proof before the epoxy was applied.

Well, assuming the prep was done properly, you've got a great result that will last a long long time. Looks awesome.

Best stuff imo is sika epoxy.. the best prep is to shot blast your floor then grind out the cracks if any and fill them with the correct putty from sika. THEN clean clean clean and apply epoxy in steps. be patient ! Ive done a few floors and not ones peeled yet ! shot blast is the key to prepping correctly and use a diamond blade to smooth out and bs in your way !!

My floor is heated too but I did it for the looks. The garage is the first thing I see when I come home from a long day so I hate having a messy garage.

I can now spray down my car on the driveway then drive it inside to soap up then spray off. Everything goes down the drain.

I don't think they ever stock building supplies like that at the warehouse, probably online only.

I think I am finally going to remud my walls and get them ready for paint and then I can look at the floor. I don't have a drain but I had been looking at the weathertech tiles if I don't want to do all the prep for epoxy.

Looks great, you have any problems with the R value on the garage door? It's the biggest thing holding me back from a door like that having a heated floor as well.

I set the temp at 15 during the winter and I can wear shorts while working in the garage. I do like that it is all glass and aluminum because it's zero maintenance. A lot of moisture builds up the bottom of the glass panels so much so that it looks like a rain shower when I open the garage door during the colder winter days. I might get a fan this winter to see if it helps the humidity.

I've never calculated what it costs me to hear the garage. But when it is -35 and it is still 15 inside mine, I don't care. The hardest part is getting the grandparents to understand that when they leave the garage door open, for 15 minutes, all the heat escapes.

I've tried a portable air conditioner that was also a dehumidifier. Barely made a dent. When I get rain showers, I open both doors for about 5 minutes and the man door for airflow to get the moisture out.

Those racks were from doing my own landscaping in my previous house. Gold Rush did mine this time :thumbsup:

Did it myself. Turned out goo for a first time and learning how to do things. $900 roughly in supplies. Enviroepoxy from industrial pants and plastics. Two good coats down, top coat has silicate sand in in for traction. Acid etched the concrete before painting. If it doesn't peel within the next few years, a good sand then going to maybe paint again with the speckle. I understand why companies would charge $4000+ for a job. For me to finish off the concrete walls looking at another two hours of work (spread over cure times) and under $100 in supplies

Just had mine done by Garage Granite (garagegranite.com) and am extremely happy with the results. Approx $3000 for 420 sq/ft. Apparently everybody goes with this color, but they have a number of different selections, and the samples they bring by are exactly what the finished product will be. Took 2 days to get done, started on a Thursday, was parking on it Sunday night.

I didn't end up paying for it but I think initially it was like $1300 supply and install thereabouts. If you're mechanically inclined you can buy it direct and put it up in a few hours.
