View Full Version : How much Plasti-Dip will I need?

So, been mulling around the idea of Plasti_diping my stock F-150 rims from their aluminum silver color to black. They are 17" rims, nothing special.

Not going to bother with the spare tire.

How many rattle cans of this am I going to need?

3 cans...u need 3 coats on each wheel...easy peasy.

I went through 3 1/2 cans to do just the face of a set of 18s covering up chrome with the flat black.

My friend managed to do 4 - 16" rims with 2 cans of white (originally gunmetal) and I was quite surprised he did it with that amount.

Mine have been dipped for almost 2years now and through this whole last winter and are still holding up perfect. I use to be afraid of the pressure washer peeling them at the car wash but now I'm comfortable enough to get up to about 1" away and haven't peeled it off yet.

i found when doing my 17" winters it was just less than a can per wheel

cool, thanks guys!

and yeah Cos, I will go in on a case with ya.

Just a few tips i've learned using this stuff.

1. don't try and use up the entire can. As the pressure drops it becomes less consistent, tends to drip more, and will give you a rougher more grainy texture. I usually toss the can at about 80% empty. (if you insist on using the entire can use the last of the can for the start of the next rim as the subsequent coats will kinda melt it all in for a smoother texture)

2. If you get a big run you can turn the can upside down (like you would to clear the nozzle till you see the clear propellent comming out). Keep the can upside down and spray that clear liquid/gas stuff onto the run in a smooth pass. It will cause the run to dissolve into the surrounding dip.(obviously the rim has to be face up and still not mounted on the car for this to work)

How many are there in a case? If there are enough, we can 3-way that case! lol. I've been wanting to either do this or powder coat my rims for quite some time now. If we go this route, we can have a powder coat meet one of the weekends and do 'em all together and help each other out too.:dunno:

I also saw videos on youtube where people did the coating with the rims still mounted. Would be a lot easier that way for sure as long as the back is masked properly.

When I bought mine they were available in singles, a box of 8, or 32 (4boxes of 8) and the price was only about 2$ cheaper a can buying a box of 8 and didn't even bother asking what 32cans was worth.

I have an ugly chrome piece that's discolored on the Odyssey I want to spray.

I've done my 19's, three coats, used three cans roughly if I recall. It held up great for the summer but started to peel at the very end of summer so I'm going to redo it all soon. I do pressure wash my car though so I'm assuming that's contributed to it peeling.

It looks great and have gotten a lot of compliments. On another note, I've been trying to find cans of black but Industrial Plastics and Paints has been waiting for over a month for their order. A friend and I are down to split a case with someone. Where do you guys get yours from?

Partsource had a great selection when I was there last time. Its actually unbelievable how many colors you can get this stuff in.

I'm going to do my emblems soon, but am really interested in doing my entire car. Being that it's 10 years old with 10 year old black paint, there are a few imperfections here and there haha.

If you guys are doing black on the rims then no need to tape the tire. If your are doing other colors like mine then tape it. My rims and side mirror are on plastidip red. :D

My sig is old and doesn't show the side mirrors.

I think this is going to be my project for this weekend as no one else is biting on the offer of meeting up and doing it. I am going to be doing the wheels staying on way as shown in the second video, with a garbage bag masking the back area.

I have one full can still from about 2 years ago, do you guys know if it'll still be good? Also, where can I buy more cans in the SW?

Thanks!

DENZILDON

It should be still good. Shake it well and give it a shot. You could peel it off if it's spraying shit. Auto Value sells them if you need black or red. Give them a call first before heading down there to check if they have them in store. Sometimes they have it at their warehouse.

Spikers, I suggest 1 can per wheel.

I used 3 cans last May, and the thin areas have cracked.

I think fonzy does it through the rim because the cars ground clearance. You should have enough ground clearance to slide under the truck and cover it from the rear. That is how I am going to try it on my Titan. I have tony of poly I can use up.

Just a couple of questions:

1. Has anyone seen a silver/smoke color and the glossifier or metalizer in store?

I am thinking of doing my roof since I have a lot of rusting rock chips. I may try and tackle them myself with some primer and paint but there is a good chance it won't look good, so I would likely end up hiding it all under some plasti dip, or 3M if it turns out okay. It's a 10+ year old car so I don't care all that much anymore how good it looks, I just want to stop the rust.

2. Has anyone tried this as a sound deadener/vibration dampener? I am not thinking that it would make a great sound deadener/vibration dampener at all but I am thinking that putting some in the wheel wells, inside and out, just may cut out a bit of road noise.

I picked up a few cans from Home Hardware here in Edmonton tonight. This way I would be ready to go on Saturday when I am in Calgary. I have one can from before and I picked up 3 more, so that gives me 4 cans total, hopefully that's enough. I spent just over $60 on the three cans in case anyone is wondering.

I saw smoke, glossifier and metalizer sprays at Home Hardware as well but didn't bother picking them up. I was contemplating getting a glossifier but I want the matte look so I didn't. Now I just hope that I am able to mask the massive brake callipers properly with the garbage bag before doing it.

Partsource on Goddard Ave has had the smoke color before. They had like 15 different colors (including the relatively new dayglo yellow/pink/orange, and brown/green/tan for camo).

Has anyone bought the gallon cans in calgary? Should I try IPP or something?

Thanks, its my Lexus at the wash, all PlastiDip.... I have many, many cans available. We should set up a day where everyone can stop by the shop (can't say here still trying to be a beyond sponsor) and have a wheel and emblem day. I have all the paper, masking tape, plastic sheets needed to mask anyones vehicle that wants to spray their emblems or wheels. We'll be around to help everyone out whenever needed. Just pay for the cans (special beyond prices PMs) and have a beyond meet and greet and spray day or something...
Anyone interested? I have almost all colours available.

^That sounds interesting, I wouldn't mind checking something like that out, although i am not sure what more I would plastidip other than my wheels. I don't think I have the patience or skill to do the whole car properly!

I spent a few hours today doing my wheels. The video I posted earlier said that you need about 5 coats if you do highway driving, but I think I lost count on how many coats I had done by 5th or 6th time. I pretty much took 3 cans and kept doing all the wheels over and over again until I rand out of them. I still had a can left but no energy to go around again, nor did I think that was necessary as was already quite a lot of coats in and the video said 5 should be good.

So I am wondering if that should be good enough? Or should I crack the last can and keep going over and over again still? Seems to be quite a bit of an overkill at this point I think.

When it comes to black we sometimes use a sprayer to do wheels as we mix our own product. When using cans I usually try and use 1 can per wheel. 3 cans is around 3-4 coats. Keep the last one for touch ups or repairing the odd chip or if it starts to peel. If this does happen use a bit of xylene thinner to the area to be repaired and respray. You will one day notice an area that isnt sprayed the same as other areas, its nice to have a spare can to touch up.
Doing full vehicles is pretty tricky, but once you have the spray down, its pretty much straight forward.

what about where the bolts go in? is there a high chance of damaging the plastidip finish when putting the wheels/nuts/bolts back on?

I sprayed from both the front and back, thinking it would protect a bit. And I chose to tape up the bolt holes before I sprayed, to avoid any issues. I didn't think there should be a layer of junk between my wheel and lug nut, but that's just me. Not sure what others have done.

just was watching some of the videos and saw that they sometimes just spray from the front...wasn't sure if they were just ignoring behind the spokes. was thinking that they might just be leaving unfinished areas behind the spokes...
