there seems to be a lot anti cilantro stuff online. I have a bad reaction to it.

What are your thoughts?

I eat and enjoy pretty much everything and I'll eat it, but I hate that stuff. I don't know what it is about the flavor that turns me off, but its a flavor that ruins a meal for me.

same with me - i was at a thai place everything was great . like you , i pretty much dont mind anything, but that was really really strong (cilantro) so I googled cilantro and come across tons of forums, movements and all to even BAN it. crazy.

Nope. Tastes like soap to me. I was surprised to hear that it doesn't taste like soap to some people and it may be linked to genetics. I guess that's why some people can tolerate it.

Or they like the taste of soap.

could a MOD or someone put a Cilantro Poll - like or not like or totally against it and ban it. or whatever works

I fucking hate cilantro. I ask them to not toss it into my pho, nammer subs, basically anything that usually has it, I ask for it to be exempt. Stuff tastes like dandelions.

I fucking HATE cilantro... Tastes like someone shoved a bar of Zest into my mouth... Yes I know what zest tastes like, saying "Fucken shit" at the tender age of 8 will get you that...

I used to hate this stuff and would pick it out of everything, but it's grown on me. I love it in pho and viet subs. It definitely has a strong and distinct taste though and I can definitely see why alot of people hate it.

I like cilantro, it can become overpowering extremely easy, but a small amount can really enliven a dish. To me it tastes very fresh.

There IS a substance found within Cilantro that is also used in some soaps and lotions. So if it's not a food you had much growing up, when you have it for the first time your brain is going to search for a memory of what that is. In some cases, the closest thing it will find is that common substance used in soaps, so that's the flavour that's going to get promoted because to your brain that's what that flavour belongs too. Your brain just relates that flavour to the closest thing you've had, which is for some people, a very soapy flavour. Yuck.

I've heard that if you break up the coriander leaf, those substances can break down and that flavour profile can lessen. I've never tried that myself, but it could explain why some people can love sauces made with cilantro, but can't stand it as a fresh herb.

I love cilantro. Gives food a lively, fresh flavor and not just Vietnamese! Start with cilantro and chili/chili flakes. Throw in jalapenos for classic Vietnamese flavor. Add some oregano and parsley and now you got Italian, with which the jalapenos and cilantro will work fine but are not as mandatory as in Vietnamese or Tex Mex. Now 86 (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=86) the parsley and throw in some cumin for that authentic Tex Mex/Mexican flavor. Jalapenos and cilantro are mandatory again. Pretty versatile herb.

Cilantro can go take a flying leap off the side of a cliff and hit every sharp and pointy rock outcropping on the way down, and then have a boulder land on it, burst into flames, then have a meteor impact that exact site and vaporize it, then that vapor needs to be burned three more times and then sent into an alternate dimension to be tortured for eternity by three rabid squirrels and a slightly upset honey badger.

In other words, I hate cilantro.

Can't you just say you dislike cilantro, like everyone else in the thread? :banghead:

Personally, I dislike cilantro, but I will sometimes eat a bit in a vietnamese sub.

I don't hate cilantro, but I'd only tolerate it if presented in some ethnic dish where it's appropriate. Most people in my family hate cilantro, and I did growing up as well. I've grown to ignore it and it's not so bad any more.

Love it, especially in Viet subs and Mexican foods... it gives them a much needed freshness.

Tastes like soap to me. Ruins any food it touches according to my tongue.

That said. I have nothing personally against it. I actually wish that I liked it but because of it I have to be more picky around Thai, Mexican and Viet restaurants.

Why is everyone capitalizing the C in cilantro. It's not a person or a place. Unless you're talking about the high end restauarant on 17th of the same name which is what I thought the tread would be about.

Love cilantro btw.

Very much pro cilantro, although that bastard weed cauliflower can snug up to a turd as they are in the same family. We all have out food villains. I spent a summer on an uncles's mushroom farm, it took two decades to not have the dry heaves upon seeing one. Ate it morning, noon and night. And yes it can be made into a dessert. Now I am pro mushroom, our tastes change as we age. If you smoke you really have very little taste remaining.

lots of neat reading about why some people hate the taste.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/14/dining/14curious.html?_r=0

I tried mucho burrito ONCE 4 years ago and could not stand it, tried again and still hated it.

Eventually realized it was the little green leafs of vile putrid fucking bile causing my grief.

I now can tolerate a small amount but if its intentionally added I'd rather eat a whole tube of toothpaste.

Interesting thread. I always found cilantro to be a love/hate thing. I love cilantro but could never understand why some don't. Now I guess I have some insight into the matter. So could cilantro be kind of the same as soap candies? I absolutely love cilantro and I don't find it tastes like soap at well, but soap candies are absolutely some the most disgusting shit I've ever had.. I hate black licorice and but I'd rather eat that than soap candies.
