View Full Version : WTF?!?! My tree is buzzing!

Doing some yard work out back...

What the heck is that buzzing - do I have a power problem?

No... I have THOUSANDS of bees (?I hope?) in 2 trees... So many - you can literally hear them 100' away in the wind... Not like African bee swarms, they just all seem to all be congregated flying around these 2 trees...

Is this just a spring event (ie hive woke up and all will be normal soon?) or am I having a problem?

Please tell me I don't need to hire an exterminator (used to be allergic; won't be DIY'ing this one)

Just let them bee. :D

They'll move on shortly. If it was hornets I'd burn the tree down but for bees I cut them some slack.

Don't tempt me... Was going to drop this row of trees next week - power-company have nicely chosen to top them, butcher them back from the power lines... To the point they're so full of widowmakers, disease and rot that they've all got to come down.

Video uploading; camera managed gooder sound than I figured... 30min eta...

Sorry Andy but I don't think gooder is a word...

It's in a book title, thus it must be a word... :)

It's got a wiktionary entry http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/gooder - making it more so a word.

So don't be dissin my gooder :D Next you'll be telling me Pluto's not a planet

Ninja edit... Youtube's agreed - it's a video...

If I had a bee tree I would coat myself in honey, wait for them to latch on and then run into a 7-eleven and cause some shit!

And here's a sweet monotone guy discussing the swarm.

Warm weather = swarms.

Some queen bee got shown the door and her troops followed.

Giant Asian hornets offer an effective solution.

When they're done give 'em the flamethrower.

Hopefully this bee rescue decides to come and re-home these guys...

I was expecting a dark cloud/mass of bees from the description. I don't really see any bees lol :dunno:

Pics or video of the hives?

Speaking of bees - does anyone know of a sure fire way to make sure they dont infest my compost bin? they have in the past and now i have two rotating ones. I really hate bees.

I haven't figured out where they're coming from, there's just THOUSANDS of em (dunno how well it youtubes, but on my crappy laptop the buzz in the video is evident) No big swarm/mass like on those pics ^^

Screwing with my plans for the yard this week, I wanted to drop 2 of those trees, and get into the others with to remove a few widowmakers and some very diseased sh*t. (honestly want to do the whole lot of em, but - we'll start with the worst, get some replacements going first)

I know what you're experiencing. I've got TWO beekeepers on my block. They make for interesting back-alley chat. I see their in my trees as well, but they never actually bother me. Mind you, never tried felling one of these trees wither.

I believe it's too early for swarms, as some have suggested.

What is going on here is that someone near you has a hive.

I mean REALLY near, as in a few hundred feet.

The bees have woken up, but can't find any nectar bearing plants. So they are focusing on collecting pollen from poplar and willow.

It will pass in a few weeks. There is a trick to draw them out of the trees, but it's probably more effort than you want.

Just wait and it will self resolve as soon as dandelions come out in force.
