So this last weekend was my first trip driving in the states where I had to worry about the fill ups and such.

I know my truck is twin turbo'd, but the manual says to use 87 octane unless towing, and if I am, use 91.

So when I did my first fuel up down there, I noticed the numbers on the pumps were different.

In Canada: 87 89 91
in the USA: 85 88 91

So being cautious, I filled up with 88.

So what's the difference here? Why the different fuel grades between the countries?

Both canada and USA use AKI octane rating.

There is no difference. You just happened to be in a specific region. They have all the octane ratings we do and more.

They have 85 down there because a lot of cars at higher altutudes such as here can get away with lower octane and don't even need 87.
