As for perennials we grow...

This weekend (radishes, 3 varieties of swiss chard, leaf lettuce, purple carrots, purple pole beans, 2 kinds of yellow squash) - question for all, has anyone had luck growing kale and where would find kale seed packets.

Perennial vegies/fruit include red and yellow raspberries, low bush blueberries, saskatoons, rhubarb, horseradish, dill, winter onion sets, a few herbs, chives - shoot me a PM if you want some rhubarb, chive or horseradish starters.

We grew Kale right in our front garden bed last year. I believe my wife purchased it from a garden center as a small plant (not from seed).

I've got some kale seed in the freezer at the moment, we usually run it in cooler months (ie september) ebay is your friend for seeds IMHO

Im having hellish time with strawberry seeds this year; alpines pop then die out; the giants are having godfrigging awful germination rates... wondering if i need to try some different soils.

so far we have about 20 tomatoes in the ground, 10-15 sunflowers, some lettuce,

This weekend, planning to drop 2 trees and start on some proper gardening... if those darned bees co-operate (still hanging about)

-Sage

There are probably a few im forgetting though. Any tips for a newbie?

Tried doing it last year. Even built a nice raised garden with fresh soil from the garden center.

Was so excited when green started showing but by mid August I knew something was up. My neighbor is a big gardener and she took a look and informed me I was growing a nice variety of weeds.

This year we are skipping on gardening and the garden will be replaced with sod.

:D

Are you interested in the yellow raspberries/Fall golds still?

Husband just got everything out to the greenhouse, our asparagus is all up, we will be feasting on the weekend. Honeyberries/Haskaps are all in bloom, Plum trees blooming. We have been eating lettuce for the lat month.

Strawberries are flowering... ahh I just wish the weather was going to be a little nicer this weekend.

My buddy grew a whole squarefoot garden full of kale last year, and I saw at Canadian Tire you could get a bunch of 15cm tall kale plants for 3.99.

Quinoa (like the rice substitute) is great, I would think you would have to grow alot of it to make it worth it though.

my mom's got a huge garden area at her house that I roto tilled for her today, and I built my wife two raised gardens, on is 4'x10' and the other 20" x 7' ish.

Last year they grew some kale in my moms garden, it was full of holes from bugs so not sure what they are going to do this year.

I want them to start thinking about what to grow where and planning it out a little better. ie - I've heard that if you grow vegetable A in a certain area then the following year you should grow vegetable B in that area. This is becuase the plant will not soak up all the same nutrients? Anyone have any knowledge of this?

Also apparently you can plant some things, like potatoes, in the fall? (may have read that here somewhere).

Also must learn about storing vegetables over the winter.

No, you can't plant potatoes in the fall. You can plant them RIGHT NOW, you're running out of time though.

Sounds like you got flea beetles on the kale, row covers can really help for that. Brassicas are sorta a pain in the ass to grow in Calgary because Alberta's extensive canola fields (canola is also in the brassica family) result in a lot of brassica pests.

Crop rotation is what you're talking about. You need to add more nutrition to the soil anyhow. Mainly people crop rotate to reduce the chance of disease. Many vegetables are heavy feeders and will need fertilization during the growing season.

Got most of my planting done, still waiting on peppers and melons, I haven't done a lot of gardening myself until I moved to this place so this is only my second year.

Vegetables:

Potatoes
Onions
Garlic
Beets
Radishes
Brussel Sprouts
Asparagus
Spinach
Corn
Peas
Beans
Carrots
Tomatoes
Cucumbers

Herbs:

3 kinds of Oregano
5 kinds of Basil
Thyme
Chives
Sage
Rosemary
Bay Leaf
Chamomile
Lemon Balm
Chocolate Mint
Peppermint
Spearmint
Catnip

Fruit:

Rhubarb
3 variety Strawberries
4 variety Blackberries
4 variety Raspberries
4 variety Blueberries
3 Mulberry Trees
Gooseberries
Saskatoon Berries
Red Current
Black Current
Dwarf Nectarine tree
2 variety Cherry tree
Fiji Apple tree

Nuts:

Walnut
Hazelnut

I have a lot of bonsai plants that were started and then abandoned for ~10 years, so lots of cool looking trees. Including a 40 foot tall cherry tree that is estimated to be over 50 years old!! Also, if there is anyone on here who can identify plants and trees from pictures or can point me in the right direction I have a few that I can't figure out.

Realized right before I took this pic how dried out it was (had the water off this week). May have to turn on the water tonight.

From the bottom: beans, beans, carrots, carrots, potatoes, potatoes, onions, onions, tomatoes, and on the left side peas. By the composter my son planted a bunch of sunflowers. Against the house, there's a giant rhubarb which will probably outlast armageddon.

Not mine, but I saw a couple of these in a restaurant. They pick their fresh herbs from them. Built out of a pallet and hanging on a wall, very cool idea!

This is about all we could do in our very small backyard. My wife found this online somewhere. It self-waters by wicks in a bottom tray that you keep filled with water. Not to mention it is against condo policy to grow food in the backyard because it "attracts wildlife." :nut: But we've had no issues yet with either the condo board or wildlife so we're just going to do things our way.

Swiss chard, kale, beans and tomatoes:

There are a few more pots with peppers and tomatoes, as well as strawberries in one of the flower beds, but that is about it.
