I've come to realized that my truck is pretty scratched up and it has tons of swirls. Since it's not a new vehicle by any means, I've decided to wax and hopefully fix the swirls by myself instead of going to the detailers (don't want to spend a lot on an old truck basically). After searching online and seeing some infomericals, I've bought and tried 2 products:

1. Nu Finish
2. Mcguiars Ultimate Compound

Nu Finish - for my scratches and swirls, it didn't help at all, all it pretty much did was putting an extra layer of polish on it (even though it said it can fix scratches) - returned it after using it on the test area on my bumper

Mcguiars Ultimate Compound

The UC is a abrasive product and after a few circular motion and some hard wipes, I think this turned out pretty good for my standard (i.e. minimize the swirls on a budget), but since I don’t have a DP/obital, it was a pain to do the whole car by hand LOL. Anyway, here are the before and after pics:

You can obviously see some swirls on the after pic, but I think Ultimate Compound has fixed a lot of the swirls and would probably achieve a better result if use power tools. Thought I’d share this and help anyone that wanted to try to fix some of the swirls themselves w/o doing a full detail on an old car haha

Going to wax it after this rainy weather that we are expecting this weekend.

Might want to use an orbital and a decent stage 3 polish as the Ultimate Compound contains a lot of fillers. Those swirls will come back after a few washes guaranteed.

Where can you pick up the ultimate compound locally?

Would this work for key scratches that aren't deep in the body? Light key scratch

If you can catch your fingernail in it, you most likely won't be able to get rid of it without applying paint/clear-coat to it. My detailing kit use to be full of Autoglym and off the shelf from Canadian Tire products, but now i've been migrating to Chemical Guys' products.

This guy used it on his old 91 paint and its the best looking stock black paint job from 1991 that I have seen. Amazing job it did. I'll use it on my car for sure.

Ya it's shopped but trust me, I've seen the paint in person...

I ran my nail through it, it doesn't get caught in it. It smoothly goes through, can't even feel it.

Meguiars UC + polish + nxt 2.0 applied with a random orbital =
For entry level product, I think it's great!! Spend the couple hundred on a
random orbital , you won't regret it.

I also used Meguiars UC 1 and 2 but instead of a few hundred on a random orbital I decided to try the DA Power System that attaches to your drill.

Canadian Tire has a $5 coupon for it as well.

I also picked up the Meguiar's DA Paint Compound Power Pack (stage 1).
Very happy with the results.

[Update]

So after some rains and washes, I've cleaned the car up a bit and decided to try the orbital I got from crappy tire (cheap stuff - 35bucks FYI). The orbital was pretty easy to use and the results are pretty good I think. Benefits are that I don't have to do any hard wipes so at the end of the day I can still feel my arms. Going to finish the car up tonight and put some wax on it (I've bought some turtle black wax and will see how it turns out)

Anyway, some pics

Does the orbital work? Yes to the extend that it helps to apply the UC and spread them evenly, but I'm not sure if it actually heated up the UC to make it work properly.

As always, after polish/compound you should do an isopropyl wipe down to remove any residual or filler to see the true correction.

Great job!
