Headed down Wednesday afternoon. Was hoping we could get our favorite spot there, and arrived to a completely empty campground. Grabbed this little spot right down by the water and completely secluded from the rest of the campground.
Explored all around the area, other campgrounds, and spent Saturday down in Waterton. Sun was out all day but it rained about half the time on the other days. Came back from Waterton on Saturday to a note on my chopping block by none other than Spikers!! He was just a few campsites over. So we had a couple beers and just chilled.
Anyways, a good first trip of the year. Enjoy some pics.

How is lundbreck for little kids? Is there a playground or anywhere to play in the water right there?

Not for really young kids. There's the odd spot in the river that has a "sandy" area, but 5 feet in and its flowing pretty fast. No playground.

If you head another 20 minutes east along Hwy 3, go up into Oldman Reservoir Dam recreation area and there's Cottonwood Campground. It has a playground, powered sites, even a stocked pond in the middle where you can swim and/or fish. Some sites right on the Oldman River.

These are from Cottonwood:

There is no playground at the campgound, so you have to make sure they are entertained, nor are there any large green spaces for them to run around in. Additionally, you are going to want to be pretty vigilant with kids to make sure they stay out of the water. I don't know what the normal flow of the river is there normally, but it seemed to be running really high and fast.

Honestly, I would not recommend this place for kids, it is more appropriate for grown-ups.

Thanks guys. I have a few more kid friendly spots already, I'll keep this in mind for a couple years down the road.

It's definitely running high and fast right now. Here's the same area in front of that site we were at during low flow (Summer/Fall):

Bow Valley is pretty good, has two playgrounds and some paved bike paths. Super close to town as well, and a lot less popular than the Boulton/elkwood gong show. Although those are nice. Only drawback for the kiddies at bow valley is the river is right there, so if you have a kid that likes to wander off, get a site that doesn't back onto the river.

I think Livingstone Falls is good for kids. The river (creek?) is pretty tame, and there are lots of places where its safe to splash around. No services, and it's down a gravel road, so that keeps the crowds down as well. I've heard there are lots of trout there, but I didn't catch anything.

I've heard good things about redlodge, but I haven't been. I'll be there later this summer, so I'll report back.

Midway Reservoir - about 35-40 minutes NNE of Calgary, all paved except last 1/4 mile. Stocked trout pond on the bald ass prairie surrounded by farmer's fields and a variety of poplars/caraganas. No playground equipment that I can recall, no services other than outdoor potties and huge fire pits, but wide open spaces for the kids to run around, great little fishing lake (don't even need a boat) and the most amazing sun rises/sun sets and quiet as possible.

Go north on #2, turn east (right) on to #581 (Carstairs overpass) and travel east for 12.5 miles. then north (left) for 1/4 mile or so - lake/campground will be on your left side. Nearest locations are Carstairs at 15 miles, Acme at 13 miles and Linden at 12 miles - camp spots are on south and east sides, Google maps link (http://goo.gl/maps/xxviy).
