So my recent post in the June Latest Picture thread prompted me to not depend on my laptop monitor anymore for editing and looking to get an external monitor for (<$150).

Based on experience, what's best for editing: LCD or LED? And what are the things to look for when buying a monitor?

I'm basing my purchase on these 3:

http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX42835

http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX44585

Eventually, I'll upgrade my laptop into a tower again.

Thanks!

mitsu will be able to give you better recommendation but it will depend on your budget too.

but basicaly, look for IPS monitors

but also, have you tried a calibration hardware on your laptop screen?
I calibrated my laptop with spyder4pro and it substantially improved it.

also, I would check out Dell website too as their IPS monitors goes on sale quite often

+1 for Spyder calibration. Unless your screen is absolutely terrible, a simple spyder calibration will make most screens good enough for proper color grading/editing.

Yeah, that's beyond what I planned for budget haha.

I haven't tried that yet:

Common misconception. LED is not a monitor type!

LCD = Liquid Crystal Display
LED = Backlight for the LCD. LCDs do not produce light themselves. Other backlight types include ELP, CCFL, HCFL, etc.

LCD vs CRT vs DLP vs Plasma is the TYPE of screen technology.

You are looking at LED LCD monitors. I prefer the LED lit screens because of crisp whites.

Thanks for the lesson, Justin!

I'll have to see if calibration helps, then check out the LED (LCD) monitors to see what works best for me.

Spyder4Pro is definitely worth the money, you'll be shocked at how far out your display is on a laptop or regular LCD. Right now I'm using a Dell U2412M-3 IPS calibrated with a Spyder, well worth it.

With your budget being on the lower end, I would just get something like this:

http://accessories.dell.com/sna/products/Monitors/productdetail.aspx?c=ca&l=en&s=dhs&cs=cadhs1&sku=320-2807

It's $90 off right now.

Or this one here would probably be OK

At the $200 or less pricepoint, the priority will just be getting an IPS panel. From there, you can calibrate it with pretty much anything (Eye One, Huey, Spyder) every couple weeks and you should be about as good as you can get on that budget. It will be miles ahead of any TN panel or most laptop screens.

Just make sure your calibrator can handle the LED back lighting, which I think most of them can now.

If your budget is completely set at $150, maybe wait until you can up it by $50-100, especially since you'll need another ~$100 or so for a Spyder Express, Eye One LT or Huey.

I have a 24" Dell 2407 WFP that I can sell you for cheap in a month or so if you like, which would be a lot better than anything around your current budget.

Well I just threw in the budget because I was being naive.

What should be the proper budget be for a 3/5 star LED monitor? I'm guessing <$250?

Thanks, taemo for letting me borrow your Spyder4Pro. Let's see if it works...

I got annoyed and bought this this morning for my computer upstairs. I think I'll get rid of this laptop in the fall and build a photo-editing tower with this monitor:

Pretty good deal for an IPS LED.
