I was a passenger in a vehicle that got rear ended - I have slight pain and discomfort on the right side of my neck and my shoulder as a result. Injury adjuster called me and told me that I can basically go see a physio or chiro or a general doctor for treatment anywhere I want for them to do an assessment. Depending on the assessment I can claim either 10 or 21 treatments.

I have never seen a specialist for anything before - should I be seeing a physical therapist or a chiropractor? I don't really know what the treatments are like and not sure where to go. Any recommendations on one or the other and reason why??? Thanks!

physio is to repair muscle damage mostly, chiro is for bones out of alignment. go to physio

You can go for many more treatments than what the agent told you, it just changes a bit after you are out of protocol

Go to both, they both have their benefits

My physiotherapist did bone as well as muscle and I've seen the same guy since my accident. It's taken about 4 years but it's now to the point where I have zero pain and full range of motion in my neck.

I used to go to chiro before my accident for ribs moving out of place due to bad posture but the same ribs kept getting misaligned over and over. My physiotherapist gave me exercises to improve my posture, in addition to fixing my neck, and now I'm much better.

Seriously, I can't recommend physio enough. Just know that you'll likely have a lot "homework" exercises to do and you need to take them seriously.

If you're in the dirty South, check out Karim Meghi at Lifemark. He works out of Sundance in the mornings and Heritage Plaza during afternoons.

If you have to pick one, go physio, especially for your neck. A good physio can do most everything a chiro can and more. Of course, there are some good chiros out there who do more than just standard chiro stuff, but most often it is muscle imbalance which pulls things out of alignment in the first place.

See a physio that specializes in MVA injuries.

Physio = science.

Chiro = maybe science.

There really isn't any "maybe" in there, aside from the fact that Chiros perform some of the same things as Doctors of Physio Therapy (albeit often for the wrong reasons and with far less actual medical and scientific training).

That said, physio often isn't free from woo either. While my physio guy was pretty good, he did insist on hooking me up to a low level laser therapy machine, despite my protestations and dramatic eye rolling.

But on topic, go to physio. They might make you do some shit that won't help at all, but at least the main foundation has a valid scientific mechanism, as oppose to a bunch of shit that a "magnetic healer" pulled out of his ass a hundred years ago.

Physio.

I would go to a faith healing televangelist before I go to see a chiropractor.

At least faith healing doesn't occasionally result in stroke, paralysis or death.

thanks to "popular" opinion on chiro i avoided them as much as i could. spent fucking YEARS in physio

now, after getting hit by yet another useless driver in this city and sick of having a migraine after ever single insignificant weather change i said fuck it, lets give it a go.

guess what? in less than two months and even with having another hit to my back compounding my issues even more. im feeling 10x better than any physio has

so like i said DO BOTH, chiro to get you moving and an active physio program to strengthen

If your physiotherapist isn't treating bone misalignment and "getting you moving" as well then get a new physiotherapist :P

trust me, i've done it all. whatever is being done now is actually working. he is getting me to move different joints and he (i assume?) holds different muscles and ligaments to stretch them out. its awesome.

and the length of time you have been in physio... ya cant talk :rofl:

Same boat. Physio, massage, acupuncture, and a bunch of other treatments and gadgets. Thought I'd see no improvement for the rest of my life. Got really bad at one point so I thought I'd try chiropractic out of desperation to try something. I go once a month and I'm improved at least 60%. Huge difference.

lol, wow. I guess there are good and bad stories from both sides. Doesn't matter if one is science and the other is BLACK MAGIC, as long as you get better in the end.

Honestly, I'm happy that I'm fixed. Doesn't matter that it took 4 years. I'll continue to extol physiotherapy, though maybe I should just specify that my physiotherapist is awesome and YMMV, haha.

EDIT: It doesn't count if you have to keep going to the chiropractor every month :P Let's talk in a couple years.
