I'm on Shaw biz, and this is the first time in around 8 years of having service that I've had issues. I know LinkedIn is down right now for their own issues, wondering if it's part of a larger peering issue with other providers...

Whoops, first time since their datacenter flooded a while back...

Just got slow as fuck here...beyond is pretty quick tho. Seems to be issues with non local sites.

did a speed test on shaw.ca/speedtest and got my usual 18mbps, but i cant even load speedtest.net......

Yeah, everything headed east is hitting Lethbridge? And whatever is at 66.163.78.22 needs a swift kick in the funbits?

Some sites load, some don't. League of Legends and Marvel Heroes are having issues staying connected.

Bunch of friends are having problems as well.

I lagged out of my game, usual 80ms ping turned into 280-310ms with enough packetloss to make it totally unplayable. I can't get through to Shaw by phone or chat but their twitter is blowing up; Lethbridge is probably under water :thumbsdow

Beyond hasn't been "local" for a few years now haha. You're actually connecting to Los Angeles from Calgary. We have "local" nodes all around the world now to improve performance wherever you are.

With that being said, Shaw is currently fubar'd to ~80% of the world. First time in I don't know how long that I've had a problem.

If you have speedtest on your phone, you can launch it. It's uber fast to local sites, but pretty much dead to stuff out east. It's like someone nuked Manitoba, everything east and south of that is dead.

As in, completely off? If the north office is offline, that would explain all traffic heading south and the resulting congestion...

toor
06-19-2013, 09:40 PM
North office is on a hill so probably not submerged but lighting strikes or falling trees, poles and power lines can damage fiber and equipment. Interesting that your modem isn't connecting, as the whole network has several hours of battery backup, even distribution portion thanks to phone service. Who knows if the two are related though, with this shit-storm...

Edit: Weird, looks like half of north office is missing, network-wise

Unknown303

Have you guys looked at the weather in southern Alberta currently?? It's a complete shit show. Over 500 lightning strikes in the last 1/2 hours pretty much concentrated over Calgary to Lethbridge.

Expect random outages again during the day today, and tonight as networks get re-routed.

Major peering routes through Canmore are down, same with Sparwood/Crankbrook. (2 major pipes between Alberta and BC)

The southern pipe through montanna runs through lethbridge, and has been at capacity for many years.

Eastern routes are pretty crappy too.

Time to call Shaw. For $58.00 a month for basic high speed something's got to give here!

11:21 PM In Chestermere I am getting shitty ass speed's I am on BB50, Called SHAW and mentioned to them the troubleshooting I have done already. I did tell him before I called I have been having issues ever sine the flood but I did not call in due to the fact I understand floods cause issues, but after 2 weeks and in Chestermere I do not see why it is this slow still.

Here is what I did

1. Unplug Modem and Router
2. Plug Modem Wait for it
3. Plug Router Back in
4. Test Still Shitty
5. Unplug router
6. Hook Up Laptop to modem wired
7. Test Still Shitty
8. Hook up everything again
9. Ran Ping which is clean 44-66ms
10. Traceroutes hops do complete
11. Ran Speedtest.shaw.ca
12. Still Shitty won't even run the test
13. Finally shows 0.31mbps Download and 0.62mbps Upload
14. Ran Speedtest.net
15. Still Shitty

Basically the tech was like well shit you did basically what I was going to tell you to do so let me ask some higher up's.

He did say there was an issue and the ETA is July 15th, I of course was like wtf dude 1 month without proper service he noted it down and then said call customer service to get it all sorted.

Just thought I'd let you all know if you are in my area what is happening I believe we have our own HUB in chestermere and something went wrong so we are now piggybacking off another HUB which is causing issues.

FYI Speedtest.net shows upload at 3mbps but Shaw Speedtest doesnt

This was the quickest way (6 minutes) to find out if this was a problem for others as well, or my account was being compromised. My phone kept asking me to enter my password on my synced e-mails because it couldn't sign in to fetch my mail. Forget my password my ass :P

I was freaking the fuck out because of this, as I've used the same shaw webmail account for 8+ years and it is my main email for any sort of non-casual emailing. Nearly had a heart attack.

Then the lady told me that the account could be deleted at anytime as I no longer have a shaw subscription to any of their services

So what has been going on with Shaw over the last few weeks? I've been a Shaw user for over a decade and lately it's been the slowest I can remember since dial up in the NW and there has been random moments where the internet goes down then back up. Are they having technical issues or is this due to maintenance or the flood?
