Has anyone ever heard of a dealership doing a straight trade? Say you have a vehicle thats trade-in value is slightly lower than their asking price of what they're selling (which is usually over priced already)

i've seen deals that end up with the dealership paying the owner because the value of the trade-in was higher than the new car, so yes dealers will do that if the deal is right for them.

If there is profit to be made, why not?

let me get this straight. you guys want a car for under market value because everyone wants a good deal. yet you want fair market value for your car because you feel that it would only be fair.

dealer makes little on new car, makes nothing on used car = no more dealer.

why is profit such a dirty word when it comes to dealerships?

What if dealer car has 2 grand of wiggle room, your car is 2 grand less than sale on trade in? Maybe trade straight up if the second car will move faster, and make $1200 still.

I had a deal worked out with a dealer where I found a car I really wanted.

I was going to trade them my '91 Jeep for a '88 Monte Carlo SS, and they were going to toss me $2k as well.

And then I had it inspected.

We had someone trade in a 59' Vette and a 65' GMC 1500 Stepside for a 2012 Hennessey HPE550 Camaro and $10000 cash.

The only time I ever felt I got a decent deal at a dealer was when the sales guy got fired afterwards.

Because most people are under the impression that a big business can absorb anything so they can save a few extra dollars. And most people are, as a rule, cheap as fuck.

I've done it a few times.

After my experience at Jack Carter (trying to charge me twice due to their tech not doing a proper inspection the first time) I put them (most dealers) in the same class as the mob, bikers, casinos as far as ethics. It's my goal to make sure that they make as little as possible from me.

so because you feel like you've never made out like a bandit from a dealer (basically ripping them off), they are like rapists? get bent.

why don't you get mad at clothing retailers where their markup percentages are astronomical? they shouldn't be allowed to net more than 1.5% profit either...

I hope by "bikers" you mean the HD riding pieces of shit. I ride bikes, so its like....

Fuck man.... seriously?

If you have a car valued at what their car is is worth, then wh not? Bonus points if they really want your car as a trade in.

LOL, yeah I mean 1%ers OMG types, not guys on sport bikes. Well, that's true too. If it's a good deal for both parties then no problem! Just it's usually better to sell private and negotiate cash with dealers in my experience.

Well, of course its like that. Why should the dealer assume all responsibilities and give you full value for your car? Most of the time there is work to be done on trade-in cars to make them worthy to be on the lot. You can never take the customers word for it being "perfect", so why wouldn't the dealer give you an offer that gives them a safeguard for the event that they need to dump money into it before selling? Trade-in cars are rarely perfect to begin with. There is a reason as to why someone is trying to get rid of it and the most common reason I've experienced is that there is some underlying mechanical issue the person is trying to hide. They don't want to sell it privately to avoid conflict with another individual but they never have a problem trying to pitch it off to a dealer. The dealers know this side so they make their offers based on the typical deals they have to deal with. Sorry some people feel insulted by this but its the best way to stay in business.

You say the dealer is always shady, but there are plenty of shady potential customers that roll through the door on a daily basis too. Half of my job is to fix cars, and the other half is to cover my ass and my companies ass. My phone is full of pictures of peoples cars documenting damage present before work was performed, my cabinets at my workbench are full of shitty trans fluid samples, metallic oil samples, and other busted parts from customers so they can't come back at me with the whole "ever since you changed my fluid my car suddenly has this problem" kind of bullshit. You talk shit about techs on this forum yet I'm sure you're the kind of shithead customer that many techs would be talking about afterwards too!

I'm not stupid, I understand that dealers need to make money to have those huge casino- esque sales centers and rats in International Clothiers suits. It's so much showboating , ohh look you get a free coffee and a shuttle service!!

I actually fix and install 99% of the stuff of my cars now. Yeah, I talk shit when techs don't do their job and try and charge me to pump r134 into the atmosphere! Doing A/C checks in vacuum, not finding the source of the leak and then refilling the system (cough cough Jack Carter.) And then trying to charge me to diagnose the same problem that their lazy tech couldn't bother to diagnose properly the first time around! I guess $186.12 isn't enough to find out where something is leaking from. And then, they try and charge me $580 for a made in mexico ac delco upper condensor pipe..which I found online for $46 and change. The exact same part! I have no problem with techs who do their jobs professionally and honestly. Do you like getting ripped off? I didn't pay those clowns for that last stunt and they can take me to court if they want. I'd be pleased to take a day off work for that. Probably get better service quality at canadian tire.

Dealers provide convenience for people and there are plus sides. For me personally, I don't see the benefit in
paying someone $145.00/hour to not fix my car/leave greasy footprints everywhere YMMV...

I've never come crying to a dealer for stuff that they didn't cause or charges that I agreed to..but there is no denying that they operate much like the mob.
