Yep there will definitely be some crooks looking to profit off these cars. I'm not sure though who's going to sell him a high end flood car when insurance is going to take the cars.

Alberta Insurance Council has already been in talks with Alberta Transport about expediting the change of status on Alberta vehicles from Active to non-repairable on flooded cars. As soon as the insurance co determines it is a write-off, it will be updated with Alberta registries within 24 hours.
My educated guess? These cars will go over the border to the US based on previous Alberta registrations and will be sold there. Kind of like what happened here shortly after hurricane Katrina.

I guess this is good news for people who didn't carry any insurance, lol?
Yeah I kept thinking about that guy with the BMW suv a while back.. Where he thought it was flooded and then found out it had been horribly misdiagnosed.

I wouldn't mind buying a flood vehicle if it were something I plan on keeping long term and can get at a stupid price.
Unfortunately, it'd have to be something relatively high end like a viper, 911, etc. and I'm assuming anyone who owns one of those is smart enough to carry insurance.

WATCH OUT!!!
MOST flooded cars are branded NOT REPAIRABLE by insurance companies, meaning they are never able to be registered on the road again. I'm noticing not all flood cars going through insurance disposal are being branded at all, they are being sold with "active" titles.
Plenty of opportunity here for all kinds of seedy curbsiders. CARPROOF and CARFAX before you buy!
Example- a 8000km 2013 Jetta being sold with water/flood damage with no brand/active title!

these cars just end up being exported - illegally and legally - for parts or to someone in a country where he doesnt care

If the vehicles still "work" why not ship them to Mexico, or perhaps Alabama.....

Trouble is vehicles like that 2013 Jetta have no brand, they are not labeled as salvage or non repairable. There is no reason for anybody to export these "active" title cars. That Jetta can be bought and resold right here without anybody knowing its been in a flood (assuming Carproof would show a record) You can buy the non repairable cars to ship elsewhere but I can guarantee the active cars will be bought and resold right here.
So far I've only seen very few flood cars without the branding of "non repairable"

Apparently the government is setting up a database with the VINs of flood cars. Should put a stiff penalty in place for trying to sell a flood car as well.

That's the Stampeders dude who bought the car in BC, found out it was fucked, and then made it someone else's problem while trying to play innocent and change his story (at least that's how I still see it).

Thanks for heads up on flood vehicles, so sad that at there are so many crooks out there.
Anyone contact the Kijiji person to see what he's doing with the flooded vehicles? I can see parting out the metal body panels, but I hope he/she isn't parting out the interior, electrical, mechanical or rebuilding and reselling.

I had a chat with one of my buddies in the industry (owns an inspection shop) and he brought up a good point... It may sound extreme but the flooded cars should just be crushed.
The branding system we have now is flawed. From an illegal standpoint yes it allows for some of these cars to end up in the wrong hands and we all know what that means. But what about from a LEGAL standpoint? The cars that are bought by junk yards for "parts only"? ....His point was you try to take the flooded cars off the road only to have people buy parts off of them (modules, airbags, etc.) and put them on cars that are road legal? :banghead:

I see your point but often times the auction will change it as soon as they realize it and then make the announcement. Also I believe there is a rule that states if the water reaches up to the bottom of the dashboard or the airbag module the car is "non repairable"....maybe this one had minor flooding?

Updates on Flooded Vehicles
Insurance companies have been asked by IBC and the government to provide a log of flooded vehicles that have been written off. This list will be accessible by potential buyers protecting consumers from purchasing vehicles that may be unsafe to drive.

So if a flooded car is "fixed" without involving insurance, it can potentially be passed off without any warning, right?

Calgary BMW did at least, they have a lot where they store new vehicles by the Burnco site and my SA was telling me they had lost ~50 vehicles from the flood... not sure what they do with them though, do they all go to auction?
