My dad's looking to replace his 1992 Mercury Sable with a used SUV. Constraints:

- Must be $18,000 or less USD
- Will have to be used to get that kind of price
- Acceptable mileage can vary depending on condition of vehicle (probably between 40-70k)
- Can't be small (RAV4, for example)
- Must be dependable (plan to keep it for awhile)
- Somewhat classy/leather interior would be nice

So what do you recommend?

Also, it seems like most people I know who would buy a used SUV or car would buy a common brand, say GM, Ford, etc., with about 10, 20, 30k miles, whatever. I'm wondering, why wouldn't you rather buy an expensive brand, say Lincoln, Mercedes, Lexus, etc., for about the same price, with just more mileage? Like 50k plus. If the cars are built to last, why not do that and have a much classier, nicer car?

A Toyota 4Runner meets all of your stated requirements. They're a bit gutless though.

What do you mean by gutless?

Would you expect us to see any more reliability with a Toyota or Honda over a Niissan?

What about used Navigators with over 60k miles?

Also, please address my last paragraph if you can.

Maybe an older Land Cruiser if your lucky? Those things are pretty reliable and classy i guess.

Late-90s 4Runner has a V6 with only 183 HP and 217 lb-ft.

well if he wants a navigator, get one. an older one is in the price range. there is nothing stoping you. I would rather have a 'sclade though. the early 90's 4runners may be a bit small. maybe not. they are a medium sized SUV. but great trucks.

The only thing stopping us from getting a Navigator in that price range is how high the mileage would have to be. Might be too unreliable.

This looks good. We'd need to do a Carfax on it, though.

If your looking for something like a Navigator, look at the aviators....they are really nice, and they aren't as big, more classy, and aren't as bad on gas!! Just a thought....

for $18,000 USD you could get a loaded mint Jeep Grand Cherokee with a V8 that is only a few years old

Aviators, good idea. I'll look into those on Autotrader.

Jeep...well, not sure if he'll like the style much. How are they on reliability?

Hey there. I got a 1999.5 Nissan Pathfinder LE for sale. It has a little more km that you want(83,000) but these trucks are amazing. I'm asking $22,000 CDN but I really got to sell it quick. Let me know if you are interested.
