lots of teams passed on shinkaruk, maybe theres a reason for it. and we already have enough small forwards. Emile is fast as F and is apparently a non-stop competitor and a "heart and soul" guy, I like it, I think MTL wouldve picked him at 25 if we hadnt.

aaannd he's Lecavalier's nephew, maybe he will want to come here and mentor him?:dunno:

I'm leaning towards total BS. If there were any truth to it, there would have been a lot more hype over it, especially with Vinny being a sought after FA.

I am actually pretty happy with our picks for the most part.

But I am disappointed with Kanzig....2012-13 - GP:70 G:0 A:7 PTS:7 PIM:159.

seriously, we don't need a guy like that, i mean 1 point every 10 games? and 159PIM?

I am sure we could have gotten way better.

I would say the three first rounders (Monahan, Poirier & Klimchuck)will atleast crack an NHL roster (maybe not ours) at some point. Monahan should have a real meaningful career. Poirier has huge offensive upside and is fast and big so he has a good chance to make it. Klimchuck is more of a complete forward so might be more third line type of a player.

After that its a crap shoot.... the goon we picked in the third round (Kanzig) most likely can't keep up with NHL speed so who knows with him.

The defensman Eric Roy sounds like he was a likely a first round pick prior to this season.... and he stunk it up on a bad team so you know he can atleast play the game. Has tons of potential, really like this pick for a 4th or 5th whatever it was.

i like the galiardi signing, giving up a 4th isnt too big of a deal and we get a gritty player with speed whos still young. i like the direction the flames are going with signings like this and who we drafted. 1.25 mill for one year is a good deal imo

also its cool to see a kid who went to my highschool play for his hometown team

Not sure about his size. WHL lists him at 6' 5", 238. Hockeyfights.com says 6' 5", 229. During the draft they said he was 6' 7", 241, and the Flames site lists him at 6'7", 241. Could the latter two be more up-to-date?

Not that it matters. Either way, at 18, there could be some growth yet, if only in weight. Hopefully he can actually play hockey. Maybe they just wanted to replace Keith Aulie. :dunno:

God, I REALLY hope Cammalleri stays. I would like to see him get the C.

as for free agents I would like to see signed and wearing a Flames Jersey?

Danny Briere - Would be interested if signed at a lower cap hit. around $4.5-5M

Mike Ribeiro - would love to see him at $5m

Nathan Horton - I don't know if I would want to pay him any more than his current $5.5M

Iggy is still a UFA, and would welcome him back, but would like to see him come back at a considerably lower salary.

would love to see any of the above make their way here.

With Cammalleri's cap hit and real dollars I can't see him moved until around the trade deadline. I think that is when he will be most valuable to another team looking to stock up on some scoring but not having to pay out too much.

The Flames have a lot of cap space they can utilize-- if Cammy goes before the trade deadline, I suspect we'd have to eat some of his cap hit to get rid of him.

Solid player. Sucks the Flames had to give up a pick when he was on waivers earlier, but I guess he was a backup plan in case they couldn't land anyone today.

From what I read, if they picked him up on waivers, they would have to have gone through arbitration (which is what Feaster wanted to avoid).

With trade, they could do sign and trade (which they did), and thus avoid arbitration.

5th rounders have very low % historically of having an impact in NHL, so not concerned that the Flames may have given up 'too much'.

Good 'trade' IMO.

yeah, we are just a team of filler for the most part right now, nothing that is standing out head and shoulders.

We got Cammy, Baert, Gio, and Glenny, and that is about it. Everyone else is "filler".

So, unless King and Feaster have some big fish on the line, waiting to yell "fish on!", we are going to be the small fish in the pond, sucking food from the rocks.

Prepare to be the bottom feeders of the NHL next season.

However, Flames fans have been calling for a complete explosion and rebuild for years. We are getting what was asked for.

No, I am going to put a positive spin on this.

For YEARS, we have been trying to rebuild the team into a contender, but only by changing the fringe.

We kept the same core for most of the 2000-2012 years. Iggy, Kipper, Glencross, Tanguay Sarich, Phaneuf, etc.

And that was our problem.

Now, even the core is gone, and we basically have a brand new team, or as new as it gets.

The FANattic is going to love this. Damn near everyone is going to have to buy new jerseys to be current.

Another plus, I am sure alot of the bandwagon fans are probably going to jump off, so tickets should be more readily available at cheaper prices. Or I can hope anyways ;)

Normally I would be excited for a new jersey, but it seems like the Flames can't do much right lately (MacInnis banner for example).

I'm predicting something that looks like these. Wouldn't be shocked if it was blue either.

BURKE IN DISCUSSIONS TO JOIN FLAMES IN EXECUTIVE POSITION

Former Toronto Maple Leafs president and general manager Brian Burke is in discussions to join the Calgary Flames in an executive position but no deal is in place.

"Could very well get done. Enough moving parts/complexities that there could be issues," said TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie on Twitter.

Burke was with the Leafs for four seasons until his firing in January of this year. He then accepted a part-time scouting position with the Anaheim Ducks.

During his tenure in Toronto, the Maple Leafs compiled a record of 129-135-42 and missed the playoffs in each of his four seasons.

Burke's NHL career began in Vancouver in 1987 when he was hired by Pat Quinn to be the director of hockey operations for the Canucks. In 1993, he left the job to become GM of the Hartford Whalers before stepping down after one just one season to join the NHL front office as executive vice president and director of hockey operations.

In 1998, he returned to Vancouver to become GM of the Canucks. Following the 2003-04 season, ownership chose not to renew his contract and named current Maple Leafs GM Dave Nonis his replacement.

Burke then became general manager of the Ducks, where he won the Stanley Cup in the 2006-07 season. He was reunited with Nonis the following season after Nonis was relieved of his duties with the Canucks.

On November 29, 2008, Burke was introduced as president and general manager of the Maple Leafs, replacing interim general manager Cliff Fletcher, and just six days later, Nonis accepted the position of senior vice president and director of hockey operations of the Maple Leafs. It marked the third time he had served under Burke.

As GM of the Maple Leafs, Burke swung a major deal with the Flames in 2010 that included defenceman Dion Phaneuf being traded to Toronto.

Earlier this summer, the Flames had discussions with the NHL's director of player safety Brendan Shanahan about a possible front office position with the team.

Brian Burke did a good job in Toronto (as he did with the Ducks and Vancouver). When he arrived, the organization was pretty messed up and he said right from the beginning in interviews and press conferences that it would take a few years to right the ship again so fans shouldn't expect instant success. The only thing wrong he did was keep his buddy Wilson around for as long as he did.

Besides, I don't see Burke getting the GM job unless Feaster really bungs it up royally. He'll probably take over Ken King's role while King focuses on the business side of things.

Kipper officially announces retirement!

source (http://flames.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=681811)

CALGARY, AB -- The Calgary Flames announced today the retirement of goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff from the National Hockey League.

“Miikka has been up-front with us since the trade deadline that he wanted to finish his outstanding playing career as a Flames player, and that the 2013 season was going to be his last,” said Flames General Manager Jay Feaster. “We, as an organization, made it clear to Kipper that we did not want him to make a rash or hasty decision. We wanted to give him time to get refreshed during the summer and spend some additional time to make his decision. Had we been prepared to accept Miikka’s position back in April we could have announced his retirement at the end of the season. We purposely chose to wait and give him more time to ensure this was the course he wanted to take. In returning to Calgary this month he advised us that his decision remained the same, and that he was retiring as a player.”

“Miikka Kiprusoff has been the backbone of the Calgary Flames since his arrival here in 2003, and every night for more than 70-nights per season, his magnificence between the pipes gave the team a chance to win. He inspired hope and confidence, and he made those around him better players as a result of his brilliance. Miikka will take his place in the pantheon of great NHL goaltenders, and his place in Flames’ history is secure. He will be missed by players, teammates and fans, and we wish him all the best in his retirement.”

Kiprusoff played nine seasons for Calgary and concludes a spectacular career as the Flames all-time leader in wins (305); games played (576) and shutouts (41).

“I decided to retire at the end of last season,” said Kiprusoff. “I appreciated Jay Feaster and the Flames organization permitting me to take the summer to be 100 % sure. It’s an important decision for me personally, my family, the Flames organization and fans. Jay and I had conversations over the summer and nothing had changed for me and upon returning to Calgary last week, I once again spoke with Jay and confirmed with him that I would be retiring.”

“I’ve been very lucky to have spent 10 years of my career in Calgary. There is no better place to live and play. I look forward to taking the next year with my family to enjoy everything wonderful about southern Alberta.”

“I have so many people to thank for their tremendous support including the Flames ownership group who always provide the team with every resource to be successful as well as creating a family environment for the players off the ice. To the staff who work so hard to make every game night special for the fans and most importantly, Flames fans who through good times and bad, our fans never left our side. And finally, my teammates for making it fun and rewarding to come the rink everyday.”

Kiprusoff was acquired by the Flames on November 16, 2003 from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a second round draft pick. He finished the 2003-04 regular season with the Flames posting a modern day NHL record GAA of 1.69. His stellar play continued into the playoffs as he won 15 games, five of them by shutout, leading the Flames to within one victory of a Stanley Cup championship and was named a finalist for the Vezina Trophy.

In 2005–06, he broke Mike Vernon's franchise record when he recorded his 40th win of the season, against the Minnesota Wild on April 8, 2006. He was not only touted as the top goaltender in the league, but also argued to be a candidate for the Hart Memorial Trophy as the most valuable player in the NHL. Finishing the season with a 42–20–11 record and a team record 10 shutouts, he was named a first team all-star and awarded the Vezina Trophy, as well as the William M. Jennings Trophy. He was also named a finalist for the Hart.

Kiprusoff recorded another 40 wins campaign and played in his first All-Star Game during the 2006–07 season. He recorded his 21st shutout in a Flames uniform on March 27, 2007, to break Dan Bouchard's franchise record and earned his third consecutive nomination for the Vezina Trophy.

In 2007-08, he missed the 40 win plateau by one, posting a 39-26-10 record but led the league with 45 wins in 2008–09. The following three seasons he notched 35, 37 and 35 win campaigns en-route to becoming the 27th goalie in NHL history to record 300 career wins. He reached the mark with a 4–3 victory over his former club, the San Jose Sharks. The truncated 2012–13 season provided Kiprusoff another milestone as a 4–1 victory, once again over the Sharks, on March 6, 2013 marked his 300th win as a member of the Flames. He would conclude his illustrious career with 319 wins, a 2.49 GAA, 44 shutouts and a .912 save percentage.

During his career in Calgary, Kiprusoff became a spokesman for the Children’s Cottage Society and the Rainbow Society of Alberta, an organization that aims to grant wishes for children with chronic or life-threatening conditions. While backstopping the Flames, he donated $10 for each save he made.

C Ya Kipper. You pretty much singlehandedly held the Flames on your shoulders for years now.

...so... who's gonna be the starter for the Flames now? Karri? MacDonald?

Calgary doesn't exactly have assets to trade away, so maybe they end up with a questionable UFA? Mason? Theodore?

Thomas? :)

Nope, the flames are in no position to pick up a mediocre UFA goalie when they already know the next few years will be a struggle. Why pay more when you know you won't have a change at the playoffs/cup for several years.

Nice to see that even after retirement, he's staying in Calgary.

Agreed. I guess it all has to do with the mentality. Do they tank for the next couple of years purposely and try to get better draft picks, or do they at least try to compete to keep it remotely entertaining? If the latter, then a veteran goalie for cheap might be a good idea, since Karri has never proven himself at the NHL level and we already know what MacDonald can (or can't) do.

But you're right - I'm sure they know Flames management and ownership knows they have a team that can't compete so why throw money at it for no reason.

With that said, aren't they below the cap floor now that Kipper has left?

i am actually expecting a few big signings from this. But I got zero clue as to who for the UFA list to bring in.

Still wondering who is going to wear the C this year...

I'm not entirely sure of the details of everything, but according to Capgeek (very reputable) Kipper's contract is no longer on the books and they are sitting at just over 51m in contracts. After reading up on it, I believe the cap floor is 44m so there is no requirement for Calgary to pick up any more contracts to meet the minimum.

It depends on when he signed the contract. If it was signed before he was 35 or 36(can't remember the exact year), he can retire without his cap applying.

How busy are pre season games? Sold out?

My friends have seats in PL15 row 11 for saturdays game against the oilers.. But on ticket master there no seats really close. If I buy a ticket and go what are the chances of being able to sit with them?

If only he was playing for the Bruins last playoff, he'd have a cup now.

Yah for all his accomplishments at the international level I was very very surprised by him being left off the list. Figured he deserved to rock the big C this time around.

It's pretty easy to see why he was left off the team and didn't get an invite:

- He's declining (he can still score, but Canada is STACKED with scorers)
- He's not as fast as he used to be and you'll need some wheels for the larger international ice
- He's a leader, but there are many leaders on the team already

^yeah that.

and i don't think Yzerman is going to make the same mistake that Gretzky did by bringing in older players that are on the decline just because they'd been there before.

For goaltending, we have a lot of good goalies in the system right now. Here's the stats from Saturday

* Karri Ramo stopped 13 of 17 shots in Edmonton

* Reto Berra stopped 13 of 14 shots (then two more in the shootout)

* Joey MacDonald stopped 10 of 11 in Calgary

* Joni Ortio stopped eight of 10

I don't know the stats from Monday, but I know so far Berra and Ortio are the two that have the best stats. Most of Ramo's goals against were hard to fault him for though, no d-coverage in they scrum in front of the net.

European goalies need time to adjust to NHL ice, probably 15 games each to really start showing real potential. I think this season we'll go with three goalies, Ramo, Berra and MacDonald for the experience he has. I thought Ortio played pretty well when I was watching him, and he definitely shows flashes of brilliance, but he isn't consistent enough. I can see him playing for the Heat and being a real NHL contender in a year or two.

Brutal. If they got rid of the blue lines, Iginla could get 40 goals again. Unfortunately for him, he's still going to have to work hard and skate at least 100ft every shift.

He doesn't even look like he's trying any more.
