*This build thread is to help keep me motivated and for some input as the car starts to come together*

In my opinion, RX-7's are great cars, and I really like the rotary engines that they come with but I just can't justify the expense of a reliable 500+whp 13b. With that said I've been putting jz's into FC's since 2009 and have had alot of fun doing so. Here is my current project:

Goals:

-500+whp on pump gas, 700+whp on pump + meth
- 10 second quarter mile of some sort
- 3000lb with me in it and all fluids
- capable on the road course
- street legal

Mods to date:

Engine/Trans:

2jz-gte/v160

- gsc s2 cams
- gsc behive springs
- gsc Ti retainers
- gsc viton valve seals
- RMR 90mm throttle body
- Sheetmetal intake manifold
- custom ss exhaust manifold
- -8AN valve covers
- D585 ignition coil conversion
- TiAl mvr44 wg

- Mishimoto 24x12x4" intercooler
- koyo rad with AN inlet and outlet
- Megasquirt ms3x
- Greddy T88-34d (billet wheel ready to go in some day)
- - 8 fuel rail
- 1680cc injectors
- dual bosch 044 pumps (-6 line each to y before rail)
- Al fuel cell
- Integrated engineering surge tank

Body/Interior

- All rust cut out and repaired
- cage
- Underside and wheel wells are POR 15'd
- Interior and engine bay are painted white
- Ronin widebody fenders and quarters
- shine fc2000 rep front bumper
- Sparco pro2000 seat
- Cobra Evolution seat
- Stack st8130p
- OMP wheel and quick release

Suspension/Brakes/Wheels

- Front and rear subframes, knuckles etc sandblasted and POR 15'd

- supernow fd rear rotor conversion
- supernow outer tie rod ends
- Delrin bushings (subframe, control arms, trailing arms, diff)
- ST sway bars with spherical end links
- Panasport c5c2's with custom lips 11x17 front , 275/40/17 Sumitomo HTRZ II (chunky I know) and 11.5x17 rear with 315/35/17 Nitto NT555R's)

I still need to get many things before this is complete but some of the first items will be:

- coilovers
- aem tru boost
- aem failsafe wideband
- wire/relays etc for chassis and starting/charging harness from scratch
- more nozzles for the meth kit (thinking about one in each runner)
- paint for hood, doors, fenders, bumpers, quarters, and the rest of the car
- driveshaft
- brake lines

Here are some pictures:

Thanks dude. I agree that it violates the original idea of the car but to get the same level of performance and reliability you're basically talking about a 20b swap + lots more $$. Its something I'd like to do some day but for now I can't justify the expense.

Put the intake manifold and exhaust manifold + turbo on.

The exhaust manifold needs to be modified some more so the turbine housing will clear the strut tower and I need to decide on the final position of the wastegate.

As for the intake manifold, the mounting tabs that secure the fuel rail were interfering with the cps sensors (not required with my ems so I'll make blanks at some point). A little cutting and welding solved that problem though. I even got a free TIG lesson out of it (Thanks Mike!)

I've been a rotary RX-7 guy for over a decade, but I still think this is cool. You're kinda SOL for rotaries unless you do your own work anyway so I can see what you mean for reliable high horsepower.

I've kinda been on the fence on the 2jz... I thought the V160 was like unobtanium? Prices I've seen are more than a 13B-T or even some whole FCs. Is there really much cost savings over a 20b setup?

Noremac
07-30-2013, 12:44 PM
The v160 is less common than the r154 for sure but you can still get ahold of one if your willing to pay. Prices range from 3-5k typically.

As for the price comparison, consider what it would cost for a 700hp ready 20b with a transmission that can handle 700+ ft.lbs tq attached to it... Or just ask Max :)

theFlash
08-01-2013, 11:58 AM
That's not as bad as I thought for a strong 6 speed.

I see you've done a 1jz before in an FC, any comments on the weight distribution? I see a lot of comments in regards to engine swaps in FCs/FDs saying the balance will be all off, etc, etc, but I've never driven one. How's it in the real world?

Either way I'm looking forward to this and would love to check it out in person when it's done.

Noremac
08-01-2013, 08:14 PM
I've done a 1jz, 1.5jz and am currently doing a 2jz swap into an fc.

As far as rotary fc vs jz fc, the jz makes it about 90kg heavier overall. I would estimate that about half of this is further forward than with the rotary. While this is a significant increase and a difference you can feel, it doesn't in any way make the car unpleasant to drive. At the limit I would suspect that a jz swap may make the car more prone to understeer but its been so long since I've driven a rotary powered TII its hard to say.

Some other things to consider in this particular swap that help to offset the weight difference are:

- Pop up headlight delete
- relocated battery
- simplified wiring
- fiberglass fenders and bumper
- no a/c
- no ps
- revised hood latch
- lightened Al hood

I'll be interested to see the corner weights when its all done. I suspect it will be less of an imbalance than one would think.

Any updates?!

How you're describing it is interesting me more. Funny thing is I've done everything on that list except I still have power steering and hood latch is stock naturally. Don't know the f/r weight as I'm changing my coilover setup, but it would be interesting to see my current balance #s with the 13B-T.

I see the 1jz clears the FC hood. Does the FC turbo hood clear the 2jz?

Also, I may have missed it but how are you mounting the engine? Tech 2 swap kit or did you do something on your own?

Noremac
09-24-2013, 04:45 AM
No real updates due to 84hour weeks at work and other projects. It would be interesting to see your f/r weight distribution so I have some data to compare. The 2j clears the hood with some bracing removed and a modification to the scoop. The engine mounts are of my own design which bolt onto the factory subframe and use the metal portion of the jz mount.

Bought some Rotora 4 pot calipers and 2 piece 330mm rotors. Should be an improvement with decent pads.

As a result my nearly new TII calipers, rotors, lines and Porterfield pads are now available. PM if interested.

I played around a bit today with the idea of a v mount setup for the intercooler and radiator. Currently the tb side of the intercooler piping when mounted traditionally is already about 90% finished but I'm still not decided either way.

Any thoughts from those that have ran v-mount and traditional setups?

Looking cool so far man! Will just have to make a few custom end tanks for the intercooler eh?

I have a question more than anything. Why are you using that particular trigger wheel setup. As far as i know the ms3x has no issues reading the stock VR sensors?

Noremac
01-19-2014, 09:30 PM
That is what will have to be done if I go with a v mount setup. Ms3x is capable of doing it that way as well. I purchased the entire harness, ecu, coil kit, injectors, rail and map sensor from a guy who used it with great success in both his 2jz powered fc and fox body:

Its the way he liked to run it most. I'll give it a try and see.

After some consideration I'll be going with a conventional radiator and intercooler layout for this year. Sometime down the road I'd like to experiment with an intercooler/radiator setup that occupies the same space as the factory radiator in an over-under orientation. The reduction in surface area of both cores would be made up for with increased thickness and significant ducting.

On another note I've put all new bearings into the differential housing and am ready to tq the crush sleeve to spec and install the carbonetic 2 way. Has anybody done this before in an s4 or s5 diff?

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the rear of the car but it will involve both a wing and a diffuser at some point. I hope to finish the exhaust this weekend (4" turbo back in ss with a vibrant resonator and a magnaflow muffler). Updates soon.

Thanks guys, yes this was the Twins Turbo 5 stage kit that was installed on Bjorn's engine as delivered to him.

I'm really tempted to gather the other components (tank, pressure lines, block feed fitting, filter adapter, cooler and possibly a vac limiting valve) and install it on my factory bottom end. It should improve ring seal and provide a greater sump capacity depending on what I can fit.

Something else I'm considering when I go dry sump is to run a mechanical fuel pump off of the rear of the pump. Its the ultimate in simplicity and could make for both a higher flowing and more reliable pump arrangement than I currently have.
The only question is if a surge tank is necessary on a mechanical fuel pump setup if I were to run a check valve inline near to the tank (sumped fuel cell) and the feed line is of appreciable diameter (-10).

Thoughts?

The only question is if a surge tank is necessary on a mechanical fuel pump setup if I were to run a check valve inline near to the tank (sumped fuel cell) and the feed line is of appreciable diameter (-10).

Thoughts?

Nice, looks to be quality.

I would say you would still need a sumped fuel cell if you are doing any kind of racing. If you are absolutely dead set on a mechanical fuel pump, you can always run it like this for your set up. Proven to be effective.

Agreed, I do have a sumped fuel cell in the car already. I've heard of some drag biased setups running without a surge tank with good reliability and not requiring a feeder pump. I think I'll end up integrating some kind of 1 or 2L surge tank upstream of a check valve just to be sure.

As for a mechanical pump I've seen that setup but I think I'd like to run it off of the back of the dry sump pump instead ( a common configuration).

I'll be the first to say that big wings aren't necessarily to my taste but after having driven a 500hp fc at high speed without a wing, it's something that I feel is required.

With that said here are a few pictures:

Carbon element (I'm told it's an Origin?) and Ronin mounts. Please excuse the current state of disorganization that my garage is in :)

They have finally arrived.

A few small issues that I expect the vendor will correct but overall decently made and very light!

Thanks. Still lots of work left.

No problem asking but I think I'll wait until the vendor corrects the outstanding issues before providing any advertising. This is apparently the second set in North America .

Nice to see you're still going! My own project hit financial trouble due to job issues, but hopefully can get back at it soon.

That is a great color!
