So just to update on that large 3 foot x 10 foot porcelain tile "sheets" (I updated the original thread...but it's dead, so I'll just start a new one).

So we're just wrapping up this current job. Had a few minor/major heart attacks while doing the 3'x10' sheets.

The first piece I broke, I managed to re-configure my layout, and salvage that piece, albeit about 2 mm short in one area, but still able to use it.

Not to mention, when I was working on the very last piece, I went to pick it up just an inch or so...and CRACK!!! It broke as well!!! But, again I dodged a bullet, as the crack went between the two cut marks, thank God.

So anyways here's some pics so far:

I don't really care for it on walls/shower. Floors maybe.

How much is one tile? Just curious because I like the look.

Meh, not for me. Doesn't really look like tile when it is that big?

Not my preference either. I like large 48x48 floor tiles, but looks out of place on the walls to me. IMO you have to have the space to support that size and a shower stall is way to small for it.

Same thing with the 48x48 tiles... To me it looks funny if you lay it in a 50 sqft bathroom and drop in 3 tiles, but awesome in a 1200sqft foyer/living room.

$500.

It's not SUPER expensive tile. Works out to around $15/sq ft.

Question: If you saw the showhome at the Stampede this year, they're using large "tiles" all over the house. Wall behind behind bed, around fireplace, in the shower.
Is this tile or is there some sort of cheaper alternative that they're using. I can't see that stuff being tile, it seemed like it was a pre form sheet and probably pretty thin.
I say this because they were doing whole walls with it (15'x9') in the house and with all those cuts to the tile, just didn't seem realistic.
Found a pic of the shower they did, which looked legitimate but when you saw it throughout the house, I was just thinking, all those cuts and the grout didn't seem real. Couldn't get close enough to really tell.

No, that's actual tile. I can't tell if they've cut those mitres out of the tile, or they're actual "cheveron" shaped tiles. There are series in that shape,( http://www.empirekitchenandbath.com/walker-zanger-pop006.html ) but I've also seen designers ask for the pattern to be cut from regular square or rectangle tile.
I see a few imperfections in the install in that shower, but generally looks good.

Thanks.

Your work looks like pure art. I'd almost want to just go see you do this stuff for a day, brilliant work.

Sure would suck if the home owner damaged one, haha, a lot easier to replace one small tile vs one big one.

So no 89coupe seal of approval?

I like it for the most part but from a practical stand point it would really suck if something got damaged.

Same could be said for your 8' solid piece of granite countertop, or the $2,000 piece of 10mil glass around the shower.
I fail to see any difference.
:dunno:

Unless your standing inside your shower swinging a sledgehammer around...

What do you think of this stuff Dave? I know lately tiles have been going bigger and bigger. I imagine install is much more of a pain in the ass, but besides that?

Is this a trend that is going to continue until you're basically installing 3 tiles for a large shower?

Hey Harlan!!

At first I was cursing this stuff. Even the 24x48 I thought was crap. Had to buy that expensive rail saw. Then this 3x10 shit...ugh.

But now that I've worked with it, I'm starting to really like it. It's hard, sure, but I just charge accordingly. And it separates the men from the boys. I'm not bidding against every DIY'er and Kijiji specialists who can throw down 12x12 and think they're a journeyman.
And I absolutely love the look of the large format. The Achilles heel of our industry is grout. Having hardly any of that with this stuff is a huge bonus.

We have large tile in our office reception. 1000mm x 3000mm x 5mm thick. The large tiles look really good.
