I know N4 is not even a year old yet, I guess the next N4 will be a take a bit longer since now stock is available on One and GS4 and MotoX is out this fall.

New N7 seems like a great buy @ $230 with 1900x1200 screen.

Ya, N4 should be refreshed in the fall. Not sure who will make it though as LG was not bidding for it this time. MotoX though I hope will be available in the play store, I doubt it will be cheap like the N4 though as it is made in the US etc. These prices though on the N7 will probably be $10 more again so $239/269 then shipping.

Good thing they are adding the bluetooth le as that should help battery life for devices that use it.

Nothing super compelling about 4.3.

N7 definitely a nice upgrade, I hope we get the LTE version.

Don't blame LG for not bidding again. Made a great phone and got undercut by 40% out of the gate.

What I don't get is why Google doesn't just release Nexus phones under Moto. Moto is hanging by a thread, could use more business.

Hmmm, I probably won't upgrade just for the screen. That seems to be the only real upgrade. For a first time buyer though that is a steal compared to something like the iPad mini.

Also LOL at the WiFi comments.

That is the price they came up with though to sell tons of them. Moto though I thought is doing well in the US especially with all of the verizon droid stuff and motox looks pretty awesome but they have to bid like the rest. So the next one would likely by Samsung or Moto or HTC.

I've been reading the N4 successor will be on a Sony i1 Honami. Not sure how much weight is behind that though.

Snapdragon > Tegra

Tegra is frigging awful at anything other than gaming.

2 GB ram on the new N7 too.

Aug 1st will be the MOTO X reveal. Looking forward to that. Hopefully its $299 or less unlocked.

The way I understand it, Android GPE update is still being filtered and handled by manufacturer and not Google.

So update still won't be as frequent or early as Nexus devices.

Ya I tried to imply that with "esque" haha. I just don't see Google going to an outside mfg for the next Nexus phone since they can do it in-house now.

I wanna pick up one of those chromecast things. Cheap enough to play around with when travelling.

07-24-2013, 02:26 PM
It would make sense for them to bid it out though to keep up a good relationship with the vendors. Could still have GPE Moto's also along with nexus. Or just sell all motos on the play store to begin with starting with the X.

Keep trying to force an update to 4.3 on my n4 and nothing yet!

I think nexus will continue to go to third party vendors so that google can maintain a strong relationship, besides, saving a buck isn't exactly google's MO.

It isn't about just about saving a buck but more about turning Motorola around. I don't remember the specifics but when Google recently released their Q2 financials there was quite the dip in Moto revenue dragging their overall numbers down.

But I guess it would make sense to keep other mfgs in the running for Nexus devices as well.

But thats the whole point, google doesn't care if moto drags their financials down as long as they can get as many android devices in peoples hands as possible. Keep in mind Google makes its money from ads everything else is just another means of getting people to use Google's stuff.

agreed, my battery life is definitely satisfactory, easily full day on medium usage, with syncing and compulsive checking.

i feel like it's about the same as my previous Z10... bigger battery (2100 v 1800 mAh) but screen also bigger and quad-core.

google now is a beast. keyboard is also reasonably efficient. totally becoming an android fanboi now lol

what do you guys think about no LTE? initially i was kind of bummed (i know it can be done but not really into rooting my phone yet etc) but realized when there is H+ signal on rogers it's pretty snappy, i'm not really waiting per se. only thing would be uploading files, say pics to emails, dropbox etc that requires waiting. from what i've read, canada has comparatively better H+ networks so i guess that helps. was in vegas couple weeks ago using roam mobility (which uses T-mobile) and i thought data transfer speeds were noticeably slower

still no 4.3 update... argh

Lets not get off topic, I'll say that I've been through 3 android phones and this one is by far the best with regard to battery.

Here is the new Nexus 7 review from the verge, I'm really liking the verge these days, 9/10, can't wait! My biggest gripes with the last N7 was the display quality and the performance both of which are hugely upgraded in this version.

No sign of N7 in Canada yet either. You can order through B&H in the US though and ship here. Ends up being like $250~ I think for the 16gb. If people are in the states, might make sense to buy there until there are further details. Google play has the best product support though if something goes wrong.

In my experience, (at least on 4.1.2 on Nexus S), Exchange ActiveSync tends to fucks up after 30-40 days.

When it was newly established, I get around 12-15hrs/day and it get gradually worse to about 5-7hrs a day til I blow the relationship away and start again.

The highest battery draw app at that point will be Calendar and Exchange Service.

I did the ADB sideload with the google sdk on saturday. Probably took me 2 hours to set up and do
So you can try that. I was dumb for a bit, then I had to change the usb driver to show my phone when it was in recovery mode, then I was able to sideload the update. You might be able to have an easier time than I.

And will FS/BB have the 32GB version as well?

This is totally preference, I have owned 3 phones and 2 tablets and never needed more than the 16 gb, but it depends on what you want it for. If you're going to load your entire media library then you probably want the 32, if its more for games and email than the 16 should be more than enough.

Regardless of cost per gb this device is the best bang for your buck so just buy what suits your needs.

Will the new N7 support USB OTG? I'm assuming that you'd have to root it for that, right?

EDIT: It's mostly for apps/games and e-mail. But I'd be using it for watching movies/TV shows over lunch or while travelling. Although if it supports OTG, then might be worth just going with the 16GB.

I've decided to wait it out, and just order the 32GB version from Google as soon as it's available.
Will do. Looks like it will be here tomorrow so I will set it up at the office and play around a bit.

How is it xtrema!

Still like how it is not on google play though yet you can buy it from other retailers. I suppose it makes it less of a mess than last year when it took forever to ship from the messed up online store

Screen is gorgeous. Seems pretty fast and responsive so far. On par to HTC One.

PPI is good that I like reading books on this one.

Form factor isn't too different from the last Nexus 7 but you do have to buy new covers/cases. This one is a bit longer, narrower and thinner.

It's going through update hell right now as it's updating all the software on it and porting all my software from my account over.

Play Store app is a bit buggy during updates, although there is a pending system update as well so have to wait for all the apps to catch up and see if that fixes that issue.

Went to BB this morning and picked up a 16GB as well. Family member wanted one too, so now the wait for my 32GB is even more agonizing. :thumbsdow

+1 on Xtrema's comments about the Play Store...flickers during updates, but I went ahead and installed the system update, so I'll see if it behaves now. Other than that, I haven't even taken the plastic wrap off yet. The screen is awesome though, and it feels very responsive.

Anyone know where to get decent cases?

Cases, there is a poetic one on amazon.com that ships to canada, it is like $10 all in I believe. I think I might try and order the asus one though and just ship to the US along with a chromecast as I am going to houston next week I think.

I like the Asus premium cover...as much as it reminds me of the iPad.

Might have to wait for it to be available somewhere though.

Any idea what the 32GB price will be in Canada? I want to see if I can use my $50 of $299+ tablet coupon at Staples.

So angry, called staples yesterday, the rep told me they wouldn't start selling them till today, I even argued with him and he gave me a smart ass remark. Showed up today and they're all sold out. Idiot.

Any chance any place still has stock?

Anyone know if they added MIMO wifi on the new N7? That might be enough for me to upgrade.

Maybe it's just me but I can't watch Youtube HD on my Nexus 4 or Nexus 7 without it buffering every 5-10 seconds.

Youtube buffers for a long time before starting even on my desktop with 100Mbit internet though so it might just be youtube.

So on the off chance I went to best buys website at just after midnight yesterday and the reserve in store was activated! reserved one, went to get it at 10, and people were trying to buy them, but they were all reserved by smartypants like me haha.

I love it. Amazing screen. Great price for a great tablet. Finally dumped my playbook which I never used because there are NO apps for it and I dont have the time to sideload android apps, just buy an android tablet. so stupid.

That sucks, man. Best advice I can give you is, just call around to every place that you can, and hope they still have it by the time you get there. Or ask FS/BB when their next shipment is, and reserve it online.

Ah premium cover looks much nicer. Travel looks like just something to protect the screen mainly.

Much better. Now, where can I get my hands on one.....

Was going thru My Library and it had a surround sound video demo. Pretty cool for fake surround from stereo speakers.

And I used to hate Firefox on Android but it's not bad with this resolution on 7".
