I have a 2003 Sierra 2500HD that is pushing 300k. I'd like to keep it around, so I was thinking of doing a rebuild before any problems arise.

Just looking for recommendations for an engine shop in Calgary that would be good for this. Or if there were options for decently priced crate motors.

If any of you have some knowledge on the motor, what are your recommendations for it? I've searched around and seen a plethora of rebuild tips for making it an LS powerhouse, but really, I'd prefer to lean towards reliability over performance. Truck will be mainly highway and off road. Very little hauling in the box. Likely no significant towing.

Cheers

I just went down that route, the best option for me was to buy a reman motor. $2700 for a complete LQ4 long block with all the updates and warranty. Only a day of downtime too.

300k isn't that much mileage for those engines, why would you want to rebuild it?

Is it burning oil? Have you done a compression/leakdown check already?

Yeah I've seen LQ4s come in with a lot more km than that with no major issues...

Was just thinking the same thing. If anything you're going to start having transmission problems. I wouldn't fix it if it aint broke!

Do a compression test. If you don't have any bad holes and it doesn't burn an excessive amount of oil, just keep driving it. LQ4s are pretty tough, and I've seen multiple teardowns where they still had crosshatching on the cylinder bores at 300k. If you're really paranoid, get a crate longblock and keep in in the corner of the garage, but be aware it just might sit there for another 100-200k before you actually need it.
