I'm curious too - I have a set of wires sticking out of my wall right beside the hood fan exhaust like yours, but no box connected

It is the furnace interlock.

When you turn on your hood fan, it turns on the furnace fan to replace the air you are venting with fresh air.

At least I think so, anyway. lol

Correct.

Could turn on furnace fan, could be a separate make up air unit.

I'm still not sure as to how it's triggered, as it's not wired into the hood fan at all.

At first I thought it was to assist in venting for the hood fan, because when I make bacon in the new micro it turns into a fog machine. The old one never had that problem.

It's usually just a very simple pressure switch.
