Beyond "Gears"

What do the gears on people's profiles mean? I'm at "first gear" and noticed some people are on other gears, neutral, Ect.

I'm thinking it has something to do with post counts or how long you've been a member. I'm sure this has been asked before but I searched and tried to find something about it on the user cp but didn't see anything. Just wondering...

I found a partial answer on the FAQ section. It says you move up according to your contribution to the forum. How so? Doesn't really specify anything beyond that.

It deals with your post count. Posts in lounge and other sections dont count towards your total post count for gears leveling up. I'm too lazy to find the thread where it lists at what intervals of post count you level up, hopefully a mod can post it up for you.

But iirc, the posts only count if they are related to automotive discussions in the following areas:

- performance/handling
- automotive aesthetics/electronics
- general car/bike talk
- automotive news

Please correct me if I am wrong. I can't remember exactly, just that it has to be in a specific section that is car related. Lounge and Market place does not count.

I believe the photography and video section counts as well because of the car content..

Those are for car related posts. If you count the other bs posts, I'm actually #2 overall. Beyond, the only place where I believe I am a somebody (lol).

Doesn't mean much other than as a "status" indicator but I find that a member's attitude and contributions are more accurate metrics of their value to the forum.

Tik-Tok's mention of GTS-Jeff is a prime example. A few others also come to mind.

Hahaha :werd: Same here. But I was 2nd gear years ago almost 3rd until it was changed so that only car related posts counted from specific areas. That dropped me back down to like 1st gear and I had to do it all over again. Then yeah....10 years later o_o

WTF, Im at 4969 posts total right now, and I just switched from third to 4th gear.... thats odd. :dunno:
