The gf and I are planning on doing a 'caesar tour' this weekend, hitting areas along and around 17th ave trying caesars from each different place we can find. Just looking to see if anyone's got suggestions for places to hit that have really good ceasars?

So far we've got the mission diner, and maybe the unicorn.

This sounds like a great night and tour. To be loyal to the Ceasar I think the tour should start at the Westin Hotel with a toast to Walter Chell who invented the Ceasar. Or maybe the night could end there ;)

I'm not gonna say it's for everybody but National has an interesting Caesar with horseradish and a bunch of other shit. I'd definitely give it a try if you want a variety.

I look forward to a write-up when you're done ;)

Ceasars steakhouse for sure. Drop into the lounge and eat a gladiator salad as well.

I love ceasers with horseradish and pickle juice mixed in.

That sounds like a good idea! I also look forward to your findings.

Mission Diner on 4th (if it's still around) has a few interesting caesars on their menu, I'd suggest swinging by and giving the bacon caesar a whirl.

The clarified Caesar at Charcut is a nice take on the original. The bacon garnish pushes it over the top.

I totally missed that...are we sure there wasn't a ninja edit there?

Additional: National has an interesting caesar. Chorizo and Cheese as garishes, cajun spcing in place of celery salt and a splash of IPA thrown in. I sub'd the vodka for shitty tequila and held the IPA (no wheat) but it still had a good taste to it.

This is not downtown but if you get the chance go to Casino Calgary, best caesar I've ever had. With extra beans

Parkerhouse has an interesting Caesar. Instead of Vodka like a traditional one, they use gin and horseradish in place of tabasco. It still has worstecire and tomatoey goodness of clamato, but again its an interesting take on the traditional caesar.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. We're trying to keep it walking distance around the beltline 17th ave area, and stumbling distance to 14th st sw at the end of the night lol.

I thought it was invented at The International?

^ No the westin. Look it up on Wiki or something. It was invented in either 1988 or 1989 by a bartender at the westin.

The Caesar was invented in 1969 by restaurant manager Walter Chell of the Calgary Inn (today the Westin Hotel) in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He devised the cocktail after being tasked to create a signature drink for the Calgary Inn's new Italian restaurant.[1] He mixed vodka with clam and tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce and other spices,[2] creating a drink similar to a Bloody Mary but with a uniquely spicy flavour.[3]

Chell said his inspiration came from Italy. He recalled that in Venice, they served Spaghetti alle vongole, spaghetti with tomato sauce and clams. He reasoned that the mixture of clams and tomato sauce would make a good drink, and mashed clams to form a "nectar" that he mixed with other ingredients.[4]

According to Chell's granddaughter, his Italian ancestry led him to call the drink a "Caesar".[2] The longer name of "Bloody Caesar" is said to differentiate the drink from the Bloody Mary, but Chell said it was a regular patron at the bar who served as the inspiration. During the three months he spent working to perfect the drink, he had customers sample it and offer feedback. One regular customer, an Englishman, who often ordered the drink said one day "Walter, that's a damn good bloody Caesar".[4]

Looking back on it, we should have just gone to the canadian brewhouse. Were there last weekend and the caesars were tip top.
