I just got back last night after driving 3,000 km from LA, California to Houston, TX. The plan was to avoid I10 which is boring and full of big rigs. My Canadian friend who lives in my Houston community with me shared the driving, and we saw a lot of the US including 3 boarder guard stations where they were really friendly.

Average fuel economy driving 65-75mph: 12.1mpg
Top speed: 97mph (gps), and it was rattling haha

The truck:
1972 Super Cheyenne Fleetside
Motor: Stock 350 with edelbrock 600cfm 4 barrel carb.
Miles: 79,000miles now
Color: Dark olive green. Stock color.
Previous owners: 1. The owner died and his daughter sold the truck to me through a classic car dealer in LA.
Plans: Lower it more (6"/4"), 5.3L vortec EFI swap maybe but then I can't have my license plate idea of "LOWCARB". Houndstooth seat covers, upgrade headlights to Xenon (not blue color) or HIDs if I can find' em. Fix the horn (not working), put lots of miles on enjoying it.

The planned route:

I've been bitching about how ugly Houston is (it is), but west Texas is a lot nice. This is Big Bend National Park.

We hugged the TX/Mexican boarder for hundreds of miles. Texas on or left, Mexico on our right, running into a shit ton of boarder guards/trucks/ATVs. This is looking back (Mexico on the left of this photo).

Nice truck, thanks for sharing. A classic indeed, Canada units (asking price and their respective conditions) are way too much.

I like the K5 Blazers of that style... there's this Orange one roaming around Red Deer I missed out on 3 years ago, when it was listed in Cgy $22,000, but current owner isn't selling.

Love those older Chevys. 12mpg must have sucked on that far of a drive though. The 5.3 swap would pretty much double that.

Really nice ride, it deserves to be in the garage with the 'Vette. I'd swap out the steering wheel, having had the exact model in a 70's Chevy and paying the price when turning a corner as the metal spokes are rather painful on a knuckle or two, also the wood gets rather ugly looking. Also, how about a sliding rear window? Some sort of newer headlights as mentioned, nothing taking away from the original style of course.

I had my heart set on a 2 tone shorty, ideally red and white. I looked for months, missed one opportunity for a great blue and white one for $25k, and finally settled on this one since I thought it was well priced. I can always vinyl wrap the roof white if I get bored with all green ;).

We did +50% the posted limit through a lot of nice turns. Lots of twisty roads to try on the drive. My co-driver is an experienced road course driver (owns Porsche boxter spyder). He was having a lot of fun steering with the throttle after the weight shifter entering turns.

I ordered this 4/6" drop kit last week before I drove the truck. Now that I like the ride and stance so much, I'm wondering if I wasted my money. I'll install it and see how she rides and looks. http://www.earlyclassic.com/catalog.aspx?category=Drop%20Kits

From the research I did, there are lots of Xenon options with improved housings or HID kits including appropriate housings. Ex:http://www.dapperlighting.com/collections/projector-headlights/products/7-classic-projector

One feature I'm not thrilled about is the fact that the truck came with no documentation. The daughter of the owner who passed away does not know where the paperwork is. She did know it was repainted the original color 15 or 20 years ago. It looks like it was painted yesterday to me. Lots of the interior parts (door panels, etc) seem in way too good of condition to be original but maybe they are. I'll be calling the daughter in 6 months to see if she's found the paperwork.

As the trip was nearing the end, I was very tempted to just hit the main highway and book it. Glad I didn't. I have a photos of the actual route we ended up taking. I'll post it on page 1.

I'm so in love with the look of the steering wheel, I'll be willing to put up with a cut knuckle now and then, although it hasn't happened in 3000km so far. A sliding rear window doesn't appeal to me for some reason, I like the nothing/clean look, now at least. It has a tilt column now.

Yep, headlights will be ordered soon. Check out those HID I posted above, they have them in a C10 as a sample photo. Thoughts? It's fun putting a sub 30 year old in the truck and asking them to turn the highbeams on. 100% of the time I have to tell them the button is on the floor to hit with their foot. Roll down windows are a first for all the sub 20 year olds I've had in it so far.

LMC is great. I ordered a new horn and a truck cover from them this morning. I ordered the 4/6" lowering kit from these guys last week before I even saw the truck in person: http://www.earlyclassic.com/ They seem to have lots of good stuff too.

Speaking of the Vette, holy shit it feels so fast after driving this truck for so far. It was like having a rocket strapped on my ass driving to work this morning.

That truck is super gorgeous. I'm pretty jealous.

A few vendors now are offering LED headlights in common sealed beam housings. I wonder what that'd be like price-wise compared to a good HID retrofit. Having trouble turning up a Canadian vendor for the Peterson PAR56 unit.

What a wicked looking truck. I had to drive from Houston (Katy) to Calgary this past may, I drove a lil over the speed limit all on interstates pretty much and never had problems with Semi's. I wish I drove something sweet like that truck though. Instead, I drove a Tiguan :banghead: but saw lots of cool things/cities + demolished a few raccoons.

Couple updates.

I installed a new lowering kit on the truck in my garage. It's now dropped 4.5" in the front and 6.25" in the rear. I also installed a thicker front swaybar. It definitly handles a lot better now, but it's mainly the stance I was aiming for.

The install went fine, but getting off some thick rear rivets was a pain (broke a few drill bits before buying a hand grinder).

This week I found there was a ton of tarnish building on parts of the trim, since I drive it rain and shine. I couldn't get it off with anything I had in my detailing kit, so I tried something called Blue Magic with some buffing wheels on a drill.

It worked great the front trim (see below), but the side trim still had tarnish after a lot of elbow grease. I'll plan to try some fine steel wool or just replace some of the side pieces. I also tried something called Never Dull which worked ok too, but not on the side trim.

I would probably have thrown a Mexican blanket on that bench seat but I really like houndstooth too, so I guess I can't complain.

Truck still looks amazing. On rusty chrome you can use wet tinfoil to polish it, but I wouldn't try that for the first time on your trim pieces. Maybe get a spare part.

I looked on Autotrader, Ebay, 67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard, craigslist. You can also find classic car inspection services/people in each state who'll listen to what you're looking for and call you when they find a matching car for sale. This works well actually because they often go to appraise a car before it's on the market, then they'll give you a call first. Search for classic car appraisers in AZ or NM and you'll likely have good luck there.

A few more updated photos. I replaced all the side trim with Mar-K brand ($600 eep!), fixed a column issue that popped up but disabled the horn at the same time.

I'm looking at LS engine options now and have settled on a LQ4 (6 litre) with a 4L80 transmission (stronger then 4L60, for more hp in the future). Adding L92 heads will bump up the hp some more and some really nasty cam. Just looking at pricing options to do the install. Luckily there are plenty of shops here in Houston.

I love this truck. I don't know if I'd change anything if it was mine because I like the rally wheels too much. I know you can get similar looking wheels in bigger sizes, but 15s fit that truck so good the way it is and I feel like they wouldn't if it was any lower.

I bought an 81 GMC a couple weeks ago, and am facing the same dilemma. I'd like to lay it flat out on the ground, but the stock rally wheels powdercoated black on a black truck with raised white letter tires is such a good look. And I don't know how low I can go before 15s look dumb.

Well, some big changes coming for the C10. The vast majority of these trucks came with 350's. An option from GM was a big block 402, similar to the 396 big block but more 'truckey'.

I found a rebuilt 402 in Edmonton on Kijiji 2 weeks ago. It has 3500 miles since the rebuild (6 years ago), the prev owner just used it for cruising in his Chevelle. It has edelbrock alum heads, alum intake, and a pretty kick ass cam. Came with water pump, starter, and the carb (680). The torque curve is what I'm most pumped about.

The fact that it's a 402, is awesome to me, since it was a factory option engine in this truck. The engine is actually from a 1970 C10 originally.

Video of the engine running in the car it was in before: https://youtu.be/wkPVKaXRAj0

This is what I plan to make it look like, OEM orange, OEM air cleaner (hard to find!), etc. But with a lot more power.

It was only after I got the engine I really started sorting out all the other parts I'd need. The current turbo 350 transmission will not hold up to this power. It doesn't have rear posi now (think one-tire-fire), and a lot more as I researched on. The stock gears at 3.08 which are pretty doggy.

After a lot of digging, I have the following parts on order from Summit:
-TCI Streetfighter 700R4 transmission kit with 2,500 locking converter.
-Eaton rear posi
-3.55 gears.
-Hooker ceramic coated headers
-3" exhaust kit
-3" x-pipe kit
-Spintech 3000 mufflers (after a lot of research)
-MT ET Street SS drag radials (295/55/15)
-I'm mounting the drag radials on stock truck rally wheels, just like the ones on it now, for trips to Castrol. Meeting the seller in Lethbridge on Saturday.
-Mechanical fuel pump
-Big block fan shroud
-Big block motor mounts (2 pieces)
-New radiator hoses for big block.
-Extra set of big block OEM style valve covers (orange)

I'm pumped about this transmission. It's a 4 speed, and the original in the truck now is a 3 speed. I'm going to have a 35% better gear advantage in 1st gear over stock (new trans + new gears) for better acceleration, plus with the 4th gear I'll be doing 1800 rpm at 70mph. Best of both worlds.

I have not totally got the pulley/bracket/accessory setup sorted out yet. I bought a used big block setup but discovered it would switch the alternator and AC compressor from their current right-left position which I don't want. The search continues. Original big block accessory parts are hella hard to come buy. I don't want for fork over $1300US for the March kit. I'm sure I'll figure it out this weekend.

While I wait for the parts to arrive in Sweetgrass, I'm going to clean the block and paint everything orange (block, heads, water pump, etc. I may paint the intake orange later but will decide later.

I've used the March serpentine setup in the past and I was very disappointed with the results considering the cost. Alignment issues resulting in tossed belts and the supplied water pump and alternator both failed in an unreasonable timeframe. Keep looking for factory stuff.

Beautiful truck man!

If you don't mind me asking what did something like that set you back?

Got it for $23kUS in 2013. Just had it appraised at $35k Canadian. The big block should increase the value too, but I don't really care since I don't plan to sell it.

Also ordered this new cross member so the 3" exhaust can go through the holes included, vs under the stock cross member which would cause the exhaust to be way too close to the ground.

Plus this transmission cross member for more clearence up front, since it was only $80.

Most of the engine is buttoned up. Need to change the oil filler cap to orange or black. Waiting on the rear end to come back with the posi and gears installed. Getting the radiator flushed, pressure tested, painted today. Just got the speedo gears from summit.

Headers clear no problem. The header flanges did need to be ground to fit on the heads.
