Hey everybody,

Long time creeper, scarce poster.

I've got myself an LC80 HDJ81 from Japan currently for towing my racecar around. It works great here in the prairie provinces, however it's undergoing some serious elbow grease over winter in order to bring it up to snuff for hauling to the states!
(Cummins 5.9, 5spd, Dana 70 Axle, etc.)

I'm curious to know if anyone has insight on Tow Bags or Air Suspension that I could install in the rear?

Theres lots to choose from for other vehicles, but I'm thinking there will be some fabrication involved in adapting such applications to the Toyota.

Do any of you have a preferred brand, or suggestions?

Ride Rite with Firestone air bags seem to be popular.

Not bad!

Do you think these would be capable of supporting a 10,000lb trailer?

Unsure how to measure the strength of these things.

Thanks!

Are you installing these airbags instead of rear springs? Or in addition?

You can find the specifications of what the airbags are capable of from the manufacterer.

In addition,

Most of them say rated for 1000 or 2500lbs or so.
Which would be concerning, so two of them would only support 2000 or 5000?

Allegedly these are definitely the way to go.

I know there was at least one 80-series in Calgary with a 6BT/NV4500 and airbags. He's running the Firestone 5405s.

air bags are going to support a vertical load, so your tongue weight... not the entire pulling force on the trailer

Very interesting.

This is all new to me Eric, I think I've still got a bit of learning to do before purchases.

Makes perfect sense though.

I'll have to track down this Cody C character in the meantime.

a 10,000 lb trailer should equate to roughly 1000lbs tongue weight transferred to the LC. This is why the range seems small on the bags, because they are only their to support the transferred weight from 10,000-25,000 lb trailers.

Bags with a 1000lb rating, would be for both bags together, same with 2500lb bags.
