A little off topic, but Seth, take a look at Suits. It's a pretty good show when compared to breaking bad.

I take it you haven't seen The Wire?

There's no current tv shows that compared to breaking bad. The wire is good but it's over and although dexter, walking dead, mad men are "good" shows, imo they are far from being in the same category. Game of thrones is maybe the only other current show that is close to being exciting and captivating as Bb.

IMO,

The Wire >>>>>>> Breaking Bad >>>>>>>> Game of Thrones >> Sopranos.

I started THe Sopranos but after The Wire, and just couldn't get into it. I also watched Game of Thrones until the middle of second season, but lost interest... it's OK but overrated IMO.

Homeland
Ray Donovan
Suits (not as good but pretty good)
The Killing (Outstanding show)
Game of Thrones
Spartacus (absolutely 10/10, one of the best shows I've ever seen period)
Sons of Anarchy

Breaking bad is tough to beat, but there's a lot of shows that are *almost* as good.

Comedies:
Archer
The League
South Park
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Arrested Development

And yes, Game of Thrones if you aren't already watching it.

Sherlock is awesome but not too many episodes.

Luther is pretty good.

Both of the above are detective dramas.

For comedies, Archer and Arrested Development. Impractical Jokers is good as well but that has no plot.

I'm pretty meh on a lot of other shows people listed. Homeland is good and I watch it, but the acting can be prettty hit or miss. The final season of Dexter is atrocious. Nothing like The Wire has come out in a long time, but Game of Thrones is good.

Talking Bad, a show about BB (WARNING SPOILERS, SO ALREADY BE UP TO DATE ON VIEWING BB): http://www.amctv.com/shows/talking-bad

BB gets a 99 out of 100 on MetaCritic, never seen that before: http://www.metacritic.com/tv/breaking-bad/season-5

Worthy shows after BB:

Boardwalk Empire
The Wire (watched two episodes in the middle of S01, gave up as I could not keep track of the characters.... went back a year later from S01/E01 and it remains a top ten series)
The Sopranos
Mad Men
House of Lies
Justified
Louie
Nurse Jackie
Portlandia
Sherlock (UK)
Peep Show (Comedy UK)
The Office (Comedy UK)
Extras (Comedy UK)
The IT Crowd (Comedy UK)
Wallander (UK/Swed)
The Bridge (Swed/Fin)
Life on Mars (UK)
Ashes to Ashes (UK) (continues from Life on Mars)

I gave up on:
Dexter (about season 5, first three seasons were decent, the books were 100x better)
Game of Thrones (after episode 3, might revisit again)
Sons of Anarchy (ten minutes into S06, S05 was garbage really)
Arrested Development (the NetFliks season.... stopped after four as it was so not funny, unlike the previous seasons of AD)
Top of the Lake (NZ) packed it in before the last two episodes.
Homeland (after six episodes, all the US panic and angst wore thin)

funny you mention that, because I had the same experience with the wire. gave up after 3 episodes... just couldn't get into it.

I think it's because I have so little time to watch shows and need action / big events to happen quick to keep me hooked. as in at least 1 main character dead every single season lol.

I'll have to try the wire again though. a lot of my friends won't stfu about it

Walking dead is good if you can accept it's about human drama and humans surviving in a post apocalypitic world. This is not a show about zombie killing, something 90% of beyonders don't seem to get

Mad men is excellent, but you have to really enjoy the characters (and it's on to it's final season... AMC doing the usual 7 episode then year off break and then 7 final episodes bullshit though)

American Horror Story is a decent enough first season, campy at times, but decent. Haven't seen season 2

Spartacus - I've only seen the first season, it wasn't bad - had an AWFUL pilot (terrible CGI, AWFUL acting) but it got past that and was very engaging. It sort of suffered from HBO's "hey we can show full frontal nudity and say 'fuck' so lets exploit the FUCK out of this". I work in restoration so certainly the word 'fuck' doesn't offend me, and as a heterosexual male, i love tits - but when it seems like im watching a softcore porn where every second word is "fuck" i may as well just watch porn.

Game of thrones - Excellent 3 seasons - the first season , VERY tough to get through for somebody who hasnt read the books, my wife didnt read them and there are A LOT of characters to learn and the first season doesnt really do it justice like the book did in introducing them. THe blu ray will help since there are bios for all the main characters. This is a show you need to watch without being distracted. Turn the phone off, put the laptop away - and enjoy the experience. It does suffer (mostly in the first season) a bit of the HBO "TITS AND FUCK" complex Spartacus did - but I found the story progressed into something amazing. I read the first two books before watching the show at all, so I knew how much "sex" was in the book, but felt like they just kept throwing it in the show because they could and in a lot of cases, didn't really add anything too beneficial.

Sons of Anarchy - excellent first two seasons, albeit 1 has blandish acting, the group really hits their stride in season 2. Season 3 when they go to Ireland, i quit watching my first time into the show. It hits a completely different pace and is AWFUL . I'm not the only one who thinks this either, almost all people I speak to who are avid fans of the show agree this was their down fall - HOWEVER if you can bear with it and get to the last episode, the final episode of season 3 breathes full life back into the show and I'm glad i gave it a second shot , I'm enjoying it and liking the new season.

Dexter - I gave up on season 3. The 'drama' felt extremely watered down and i just stopped caring about any of the characters.

I feel like i clearly need to watch "The Wire" though

Sorry about the thread hijack, and thanks for moving the post. Thanks for the recommendations as well.

Arrested Development is my favorite comedy, but I'm also looking forward to the new season of Parks & Recreation. For old timey comedy, I fall back on All In The Family.

For drama, the only thing so far that I've found close to BB is Orange Is The New Black. Granted, I've only seen about three of the suggestions posted:

House Of Cards: I watched the first few episodes. It's great if you're into that sort of thing, but it was too slow for me.

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia: I enjoyed the initial humor, but gave up after a few episodes, as it was like watching the same episode over and over.

The Office. I'll stick my neck out even further and say that I found Steve Carell's character really annoying, and the whole show kind of boring and repetitive.

I was literally just about to say you had great taste until you said you gave up on GoT and SOA. I can see SOA, it's hit and miss, but GoT is arguably the best TV drama I've ever seen. Better than BB and Sopranos in my opinion.

And on a slightly related note: so jacked for the Halo tv series (GoT budget, apparently)

Three to watch, if you haven't already started watching them:

The Wire — It is THAT good. Who cares that it's over. It's perfect.
Generation Kill — Mini series, but perfect as well, it's made by the guys who did The Wire.
Boardwalk Empire — I might actually prefer this series to Breaking Bad.

Also, Band of Brothers and The Pacific are amazing.

I am giving GoT another run, thinking of reading the books over the next month followed by a GoT binge. SoA just got so idiotic in terms of a story line in S05, so it only took ten minutes of S06 for me to pull the plug. I just cannot watch needless gory type scenes anymore, lost the capacity and have zero time for it. Stephen King said long ago he goes for the gross out when he is too lazy to come up with quality work, I have noticed this used in all mediums as well. King said it is the easiest form of writing which is why it is used by the lazy.

Sons of anarchy

walking dead
game of thrones

Heard Mad Men is good, but I'm watching too many shows right now. Might pick it up after breaking bad is over. Boardwalk empire is probably my favorite show right now, with SOA and game of thrones a close second. Walking dead sorta blows, but I'm a sucker for zombie flicks.

Suits was good in the first season but has become sooo douchey.
Every scene ends with someone (especially Harvey) having a ridiculous one-liner like "We'll make them settle, over we'll kick their ass" and then a close up on that persons face.

Have to agree with:
Game of Thrones
Boardwalk Empire
Homeland
Luther
House of Cards
(in that order)

I also really like The Newsroom on HBO which no has mentioned yet

It gets WAY better as they start getting more popularity & money for successive seasons. The final season is one of the best I've seen in any show. They tone down the CGI blood a lot and it looks less like the movie "300" with each season, but some of that is just the filming style of the show (over the top gore sometimes). They still keep the gratuitous nudity though . There's a good amount of comedy worked in too, I find the show to be 10/10.

Justified is my fave!
The writing is brilliant. The banter between Raylan and Boyd is priceless!

House of Cards is incredible too! Again, brilliant writing.

Strike Back kicks ass! Best action show in a long time.

Game of Thrones... great show, and I'm not usually a fan of mid evil/fantasy shows. Tyrion rocks!

Southland was a great show too, but TNT cancelled it. Best cop drama ever!

Son's of Anarchy really isn't that good, although I've watched every episode to date.
There are no sympathetic characters, and every one of them deserves a slow painful death. The series finale should be the clubhouse blowing up with all of them in it!

So far, I've been only able to check out Game of Thrones and The Wire.

Game of Thrones: I'm hooked and have 1 episode left of the first season.

The wire: I've watched 5 episodes and am finding it to be 50% captivating, and 50% annoying. By the latter, I mean an unrealistic and excessive amount of "fuck", "muthafucka", and homie g talk. I'm also finding that most of the cops are wooden, cliche, often unbelievably stupid, and well, just annoying.

What I'm mainly going to miss about BB, is the intensity of it all, and the ease of which you can relate to the characters.

I know it's a lot to sit through, but without reading the books and if you can get past season 1 of Game of Thrones , it REALLY picks up. My wife hated season 1 because she didn't read the books and season 1 is HUGE about the politics of the world & character relationships. Though the last two episodes are edge of your seat intense if you don't know what's coming.

Season 2-3 is where the fantasy starts to take over and imo becomes much more interesting.

I'm absolutely amazed that nobody has mentioned anything about "The Newsroom". (Other than Myrrinda in passing.)

The Newsroom had hands down the best pilot episode I've ever seen. I was hooked after the first ten minutes of the show. Season 2 just wrapped up, and I believe they've been brought back for a third, as well. A coworker was telling me the other day that it was only supposed to be a 2 season deal, and now the third is 'supposed to be' the final season, sadly. Personally, I hope they keep being signed for more seasons after that. Easily my favorite show on TV.

Also just recently heard about Ray Donovan and plan to give that a look this weekend.

I've never read the books, and am currently on S3. It's not even a genre I would normally watch, but I'm enjoying it.

S1 was understandably a little slow, but it sure picked up with S2. Certainly not as nerve racking and intense as BB, but it's got top rate acting, intelligent writing, and beautiful cinematography.

My favorite characters are Tyrion, Drogo, and Lord Varys.

Spoiler alert coming up (I think). I'm honestly not up on show discussion etiquette:

I wish they hadn't killed off Drogo. That guy was one bad ass MF.

Although it's "Old news", if I could compare one show to Breaking Bad, in terms of vibe and edgyness, I'd suggest "The shield".

It wouldn't have surprised me to find out that both shows had the same creator/writer (They didn't).

A great deal of misery, great twists, and a great finale.

For anyone interested in The Wire, look up Homicide: Life on The Streets or The Corner, both by David Simon, take place in Balmer and based on some really great books.
