Hey guys, I'm heading to Japan for a few days next week, and I have a few things that I wanted to do, but I'd like to see if any of you guys have some tips or advice.

I'll be staying in Shinjuku and I'd like to see a zen garden/temple. I also want to visit Akihabara - any other districts I should hit up?

On my list of things to try are authentic ramen, and sushi as well. I'm pretty sure the sushi will be quite different from what I'm used to here, but that's part of the adventure. Any food tips?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I suggest avoiding the Fukushima power station tour. Probably best to avoid that whole area.

You're in a good spot if you're in Shinjuku.

Depends on what you're into.

Sorry to plug my own blog but BAM:

You can. It's not hard to get into nowadays as the hype died down. I'd go to Sushi Saito instead.

Ramen Museum, one of the places I want to go to. Has different shops that has pretty much all the different ramen in Japan.

Are you getting out to Kyoto? Pretty interesting town for temples and stuff. It's been a long time since I was there, but the ryoanji temple rock garden is pretty awesome. I like it a lot more than the "golden" temple.

Some kind of monkey hill park there too that I had fun at. I like monkeys . . .

I just got back from 3 weeks in Japan. If you're staying in Tokyo, I'd go check out Shinjuku and Shibuya for sure. There is a temple in the park right by the Harajuku stop. Worth seeing. Also some pretty good Ramen places around there. Akihabara's alright too.

If you want authentic sushi, go in the morning (9AM or later) to the fish market. All the bidding's done, but restaurants are lined up serving super fresh sushi right in the market. Worth the wait! You can also go earlier to watch the auction (4AM I think), but why would you? Other authentic foods include Soba and Udon noodle soups (both OK to good, but not as good as Ramen). Also I hope you like eggs, pickled cabbage, and the taste of fish, as every meal will have it. ALL the beer sucks, but there is a drink called "sho-chu" that's ~25% alcohol but tastes like water. Pretty good but it'll get you FUCKED up.

Go to the Robot Restaurant! Pretty cool show. It's in Shinjuku IIRC. Then again so is all the nightlife; good choice of place to stay.

Go check out Sumo if it's back in season or baseball. A couple of the guys I traveled with loved baseball over there. Not so much the sport (as baseball clearly sucks), but people get really into it.

All right guys, I leave tomorrow morning. Will see temples and gardens for sure, and ramen and sushi are guaranteed. Not sure how difficult it will be to see a sumo match, though that would be pretty cool. Secretly, I hope to get caught up in some mystical drama where I discover a hidden power within me that opens up a whole new world of adventure. I'll let you know what I end up doing!
