How do you guys get rims off that are stuck to the hub? I've tried the rubber mallet method, I've tried kicking the shit out of it. Any tips?

I usually did what you tried but when you get it off put on some anti seize before putting it back on.

I've sprayed "nuts off" "PB Blaster" "Liquid Wrench" or equivalent at the mating surface between the hub and the wheel, wouldn't want to get it on the brakes or rotors though so be careful, leave for 15 min then come back and kick the shit out of them. For some reason I've had this issue with new Toyota's more than anything else. A little anti-seize will go a long way to preventing it in the future.

It can be a real pain sometimes. I once even went in behind with a pry bar and did it that way.

As suggested, anti seize is a pretty good idea.

Had this happen to me on our Yukon, tied everything listed. In the end a few hits on the tire with a sledge hammer did the trick. Hit tire on both sides top and bottom.

throw another rim and tire at it a couple times...woks every time!

Loosen all the lugs ½ turn (just enough to take the tension off) then drive around the block.

I have used both these methods with great success.

however, if possible, use a piece of 2x4 as a cushion between the rim and the hammer to avoid damage.

Make sure car is braced well and won't slip off jack stands too.

loosen the bolts, then drop it down a bit to put pressure on the rim, but make sure you keep the bolts on. That usually works for me. That and boot fucking the tire.

That's what I usually do. I'll also swing a loose rim (with tire) at it because it has weight and the rubber is soft.

I've had success kicking the shit out of it on all occasions, then followed by some anti-seize.

I thought this was thread was about RIM going up in flames like Hub Oil.

I tried throwing a rim at it and dropping it down then kicking the shit out of it too. No dice. I'll try the PB Blaster + driving around the block method next. Thanks for the tips.

How did you kick it?

Whenever I can't get my rim off the hub from kicking it or using a rubber mallet, I sit my butt on the ground, face towards the rim/tire and basically in stomping motion, kick the rim hard. Works every time!! much better than regular kicking.

I picked up a focus recently where the back wheels hadn't been off in about 7 years. I tried kicking it, I tried a 2x4 and a sledge hammer, neither was enough to get the wheel off. I ended up jacking the car up, loosening the lugs about 1 turn, then dropping it from full height with the jack (jack it all the way up then quickly release the jack). That popped one free the first try and the other one took 6 or 7 more drops to get it free.

Make sure that when you use the sledgehammer method that you keep the lugnuts on the studs so the wheel doesn't go flying across your garage. Don't ask.

Start watching about 1:30 into this video, this worked flawlessly for me.

:werd:

Nothing to add for getting it off, every trick I've used has been listed, but just make sure you coat all the the mating surfaces with grease or anti-seize when reinstalling them.

Another if the base of the control arm is close the rim, you can use a pry bar and push down on the rim from against the control arm, not recommended but does work. Also needs to be on a hoist obviously.

Before you anti sieze as well, clean off the old corrosion that builds up. I usually have to use a screwdriver w/mallet to break free some of it, and a wire brush to finish off
