Could someone please tell me how good a jeep grand cherokee with 190,000klms would be. All I have heard is that they are hard on fuel. I'm looking for something reliable to get me to bc, with just the occasional stay in a hotel.

Depends on how well it's been maintained. Service records?

Reliable and 2001 Jeep GC are not 2 things that go together.

I knew several people with older Jeep GC's and they were the largest POS money pits. Constant repairs and guzzled gas like crazy.

I wouldn't touch one with a 10ft pole from what I've seen. YMMV.

Had a 97 Laredo, wasn't that bad on gas i didn't think.

Lots of electrical problems, ended up wiring my headlights to an on/off switch. I used to be ghetto like that.

Can't remember any other problems

Aunt and Uncle have a 2002 from new, actually is still going with over 300,000 kms. been pretty reliable too. The most expensive repair they've had was a leaky heater core, cost over $2500 to replace.

Myself I'd still stay away not knowing it's history, especially if it has the 4.7L V8, those engines are just terrible imo.

I had a coworker who drove on of these fuel pigs. We figured out she could buy on monthly payments a brand new economy car like a Honda, Kia, etc, make the payments/fuel and still be up every month compared to only her monthly Jeep fuel bill. Jeep repair costs were not involved as I could tell she was getting pissed at her stupidity, so I let it go. Sometimes you cannot push your manager too far.

I have a 99 grand cherokee with the 4.0 litre I6. It is tough on fuel (16-17mpg) with mostly deerfoot driving. I have 255k on mine and its fine. It is very under powered in my opinion for city driving its fine. Only issues I've had are the ignition cylinder broke ($100 in parts and I did the labour) and earlier models had shitty calipers which are prone to warped rotors, newer models had a different caliper to prevent this. All in all It's been a great winter beater and met my needs completely.

i actually really like my wj.
i do my own work, but have not had any serious mechanical issues; just small things that are mostly expected on an aging vehicle.
limited/overland interior is surprisingly good.
quadradrive is awesome.
v8 is definitely terrible on gas. good power though.

I had a 2000 GC Limited Edition for a few years a while back.

Great vehicle...

Passed everything but a gas station...:poosie:

In my opinion: Are you planning on going offroad? The one saving grace of the GCs are their solid axles. If you are using it as a mall hauler, there are better options out there. A 2001+ pathfinder is a better vehicle, and has more cargo room.

I personally liked my last GC. Very comfortable inside (nicer than the 2005's), power everything and while I hadn't heard the 4.7 was a bad engine, mine was good with decent power.

Stuff like switches, locks, windows and some other electrical gremlins do tend to pop themselves up.

I have never owned a Jeep GC but have known several people that have and the only ones that were happy were the ones that leased them.

Not sure what your budget is but I would look at these alternatives if reliability is the main concern:

The 4.7 and 5.2 are very reliable, at least in the Dakota... People on the forums have many over 400k.
Plus the 4.7 can get 11L/100km on flat highway
