What are the best bakeries around Calgary to check out?

My gf has finally decided to move down here with me and I'm very excited about it. She's about 6 months away from being a journeyman baker and ideally looking for a bakery that does lots of cakes or breads so I figured I'd ask Beyond what the best places are to go check out.

Looking to just show here whats all here and around town. Going to wander around kensington and show her that area as well.

Shameless plug if anyone knows of a bakery hiring shoot me a message but for now just looking to show her the scene and what sort of places there are down here.

TL;DR: What are some nice bakeries to show my GF when she visits.

Kensington has a Crave location. That's all my knowledge about Calgary bakeries but you could try checking out some of them on Urbanspoon.

EDIT: There's also Amandine bakery. No idea where it was but my friend brought me sample of their tea cake and it was delicious!

Crave isn't a good bakery, it's a mediocre bakery with a shitton of frsting on it.

Amandine is on Centre Street north, and is pretty decent. Depends what youa re looking for, fancy breads? Desserts? The Uban Baker by diner deluxe is pretty good.
It may sound crazy, but for baguettes, the co-ops are pretty good.

Crave is a good bakery the way East Side Mario's is fine Italian dining.

For commercial places outside the Farmer's Markets, I think Cobb's is pretty good.

-Yann Haute is good overall
-Boulangerie for Croissant, eclaire
-Ooh La La is good overall as well. Their macarons are actually less sweet than Yann Haute
-Brulee has awesome cakes. They do have some other baked goods but they're normally sold out by 4pm
-Jelly modern donuts have good donuts, a bit different from what you will find elsewhere
-For chinese style bakeries, the chinese market on Centre street before 16th has decent stuff.
-Analog coffee has good pastries although I think they bring it from elsewhere
-manuel latruwe belgian patisserie is not bad but I don't find their flavours unique or distinct enough for me to go back as much
-Korean bakery on 10th ave is decent on korean style baked goods although I have tasted better in Korea/vancouver. This is the only korean bakery in Calgary so far.

Keep in mind though that in my opinion Glamorgan is a hate it or love it thing. They do put in and also taste a lot of butter compared to the others listed

Sidewalk Citizen ... they have 2 locations, one in Kensington (in the Sunnyside Market), and one in the south a couple doors down from Tunerworks

The cheese bread is pretty good... but Glamorgan doesn't really sound like the type of place OP is looking for.

One other place to add to the list is Eclair de Lune on Northmount Dr. I wouldn't say they make the best pastries in town, but if your GF wants to talk shop with someone who owns a bakery and does it for a living, they'll actually take the time to chat.

Thanks everyone, gonna go check a bunch of those places out when she visits this weekend. Hopefully she enjoys it here and wants to make the move down.

IMO any bakery using margarine* in any way, shape or form, has lost the plot and needs to be Wonderbreaded to death. Lakeview Bakery I know for sure uses the margarine, if the goods are cheap, cheap, cheap, they are cutting corners. I am partial to BRóLƒE PATISSERIE 722 11th Ave SW, Wilde Grainz Bakery in Inglewood and Yann Haute Patisserie on 23rd Ave SW are the only decent places I know of first hand. Yann Haute Patisserie really needs to dump the paper plates and cups though if they want me to eat in. As a result, take out is all I do.

I have heard from a very experienced foodie that Sidewalk Citizen Bakery has the real goods, they have no margarine on the property. Will give this place a shot on the weekend.

I used to love Lakeview Bakery, Beyond was sandwiched between Mac's and Lakeview Bakery in the 90's. They've changed quite a bit now tho, they cater to the organic and allergy crowd.

Time and place, I used to do some serious carb loading at Lakeview. Now I take quality over quantity most of the time. The entire mall is a bit empty, the DQ has at most eight customers when I drop by for something dairy. The "hot" grill I have never seen fired up at all.

I'll second the recommendation for Brule. We've got several cakes from there and they've been fantastic. Also love Sidewalk Citizen, Yan's and La Boulangerie.

I used to go to this bakery in Chinatown on the way home, I think by Sakana Grill under the street level, because they sold these amazing sticky buns. I have no idea what they're actually called. Basically they look like an uncut hamburger bun but inside they have this coconut deliciousness. I think the last time I was there was over 10 years ago lol.

Love Gunthers as they make the best bread from the old country :D

Probably wouldn't want to work there if you aren't an old Eastern European woman... kinda like Polcan but for bread.
