There are many ways that Obama can raise the debt ceiling without the approval of congress.
One of four ways that has some backing, is to simply mint a one ounce Trillion dollar platinum coin. It would never see circulation, and would always be held by the US government as a "placeholder" to be melted down (destroyed) when times are better.
