View Full Version : Got Hit Lightly This Evening...

I got out of school today at around 11:30, only to find a piece of paper on my windshield with a note saying that some girl backed into my car.

I will write exactly what she wrote me.

"Hi, I accidentally bumped into your bumper - call me and i'll get you some polish to take out those scratches" with her phone number.

I took a closer look, and it seemed as though the area has started to spiderweb (underneath the paint). Not being an autobody specialist, i'm reasonably 100% sure that you can't do much about it unless you repaint the whole bumper.

It's light damage but I just got my paint job a few months back, and the car is still pretty mint. I'll get some pics up tomorrow - the car is lightly scratched all across the front of the bumper, and several areas have either chipped off or become spiderwebs under the paint. Included is a pic of one area of the bumper that has sprung a web. Should I pursue it or just let it fly?

go to a bodyshop to find out what needs to be done. then decide what to do.

Yah, it's a tough call. She left a note, so it's not right to screw her over - but on the other hand, damage is damage. I'd be pretty pissed if I left a note for a ding and the guy asked for a new bumper and spray. Bumpers get bumped, when they are bumped enough you get a new one.

that will buff right out as she said lol:D
shit happens....if its really minor not sure if I would really make her pay a few hundred over minor damage like that...she was nice enough to at least leave a note about it so :dunno:

but again, I am only lookin at that small area which is shown in the pic....if the whole bumper is all scratched to shit then yeah I would get her to pay for paint I think, if damage is confined to one SMALL area then I would just leave it...

Here's where the problem is. Do I ask her to help pay for a repaint (probably cheap, around $150 or so) or do I just get a new bumper...I don't feel like asking her to pay all that money, but i'm still kinda screwed if I don't because of the front damage.

No that's just one closeup area that I took the picture of. It's like that in one area, the rest has scratches from just under the left headlight to just under the right.

Maybe you buy the bumper, she pays to paint it? Is there other damage, rock chips etc or did she trash a mint bumper? If you wash the bumper and show her the damage she may well offer to pay for the whole thing - it's hard to tell in this weather about scratches ( I got another door ding and didn't notice for days. :( )

Just be reasonable, all anyone can ask.

is she hot?:bigpimp: ... haha if not make her pay... damn, im f***ing mean... haha but yea, if its cracking enough id get it fixed. just so it dont spread, and chip off... my one paint flap has no paint on it now because of a crack in the paint... it was cracked then webbed out then i got a car wash and all the paint off it flaked off. she did back into you, so why help pay to get some one elses mistake fixed? just my 2 cents though.

if i were you i would just call her up and negotiate something....its more than just some scratches so just negotiate a deal...if she was honest enough to leave a note then i am sure she wouldnt mind going halfs on repairs or something. you never know until you call.

Here's what i've come up with.

Yes, it's MORE than scratches. It's scratches, spiderwebs, and chips across the portion where her bumper hit my car. Now, I figure that throughout the rest of these last weeks i'm bound to get a few more chips and such due to weather and rocks and such, so I am going to call her up, and work out a 50/50 payment deal with her to repaint it. I'm pretty sure I can get a really good deal for a repaint, so i'm not concerned about the costs associated with it.

Weapon,

I would call her, say listen, I appreciate you being honest and leaving a note on my car but the damage is more extensive than you and I thought, can we come to some sort of agreement, like splitting costs or something? That way, she knows you know she was being an honest person and that you apreciate her not running off. She will most likely be willing to pay for damage if you are polite and diplomatic about it, you dont know her and dont know how she'll react so it is best to walk softly at first so she doesnt possibly get defensive...

my $0.02

Thanks Zorro - I needed something like that to help usher me into knowing what to say.

Man you are lucky. Somebody hit my mom's van at CHURCH! Ran off after making a 2 inch diameter hole in the bumper.

Be nice considering she left a note.

That sucks.....but like everyone says, at least she left a note.

My car got hit in the church parking lot near Scurfeild last year and it shattered all of the paint on my entire bumper because it was so cold.....and yes they did run off...fuckers....

:dunno:

But I think if you could get some of the cost from here you would be defenitaly ahead of the game. Good Luck :)

First off i'd take it in to a bodyshop. It may look ok now but if you're aftraid of the damage area spreading it's best to know now. If they say it's no biggie agree to meet her and tell her to bring the polish with her. If she can polish that out thank her for being honest and call it a day. If not show her you just painted the car and get her to fix it. It's not rude to ask that others fix your shit after they break it, especially after having done all that

I betcha they'll say something like, 'it's all gotta be stripped and painted'.

Not many shops paint just a small area on a bumper. (Unless you want a cheapo job done and I betcha it chips and breaks there in the future).

It's impossible to paint a small section of a body part. You have to paint the whole thing to make it look right.

Umm why should you split the cost?? Everybody seems to be sooo leniant....is it because shes a girl?? Man she backed into your bumper and cracked the paint. The only option is to repaint it. Why should you be paying half for her being irresponsible and hitting your car?? I mean you just got it painted couple months ago. If you don't fix it, the paint will keep chipping and look real bad. If it was a beater I would say hey forget about it buy me a beer, but every time you walk by your mint car your eye will go directly the bumper.

I agree you shouldn't rip her off like saying oh look the rear quarter has to be repainted as the shock from the low speed accident seems to have caused a stress crack thus the quarter has to be repainted. Shit like that is uncalled for, but whats fair is fair. The bumpers screwed. She did damage and she should pay.

If you can get deal for $150 thats more than fair.
