If a person has been selected and invited for an interview for a position based in another country, is it okay to ask the employer for travel reimbursement since the process requires travelling back and forth for multiple exams and interviews?

Shouldn't have to ask. It should be offered. I wouldn't travel across the country on my own dime to interview

Like mentioned above, should be offered. They should also be paying for any travel expenses (hotel, rental car/taxi and food) that are necessary during your trip.

depends on the industry

Depends on the job / industry. Typically you would do one or more rounds of phone interviews to the point that you are basically narrowed down as the candidate they have selected.

At that point you may do a trip out for a formal meet / discuss the offer in person / etc.

Some places may cover your travel for this, some may not, some may in the event that you accept the job and submit the expenses as part as your relocation agreement.

Depends on how bad they want you and what the terms are. For an experienced person they are trying to bring in, yeah they'll probably cover it all. For a new grad applying for a position across the country its a lot more iffy

From what I've been involved in, the travel would be paid by the company, and potentially would include your Spouse as well to do some preliminary house-hunting work. My company has a relocation specialist who does some of the up-front real estate comparisons and give suggested areas based on the candidates criteria.

A good candidate, for a professional postion, should not be out of picket for the travel.

I was in that situation and my issue was will they pay for business or put me in economy (deal breaker), luckly, got business and all expenses paid for the trip, hotel, taxis etc. You should not incure any costs to attend interview. Have done it twice.

^^ I wouldn't expect travel for a spouse unless the job is pretty well locked in.

I would 100% expect that the company would cover your travel costs.

Call em up and ask if they've got a specific travel agent they would like you to coordinate with.

I agree that I would expect the potential employer to cover my costs to get there but it seems a little over the top for business class to be a "deal breaker" IMO.

I agree with the statements above saying it should be covered 100%.

When you look at it the other way around, wouldn't it be so off putting to even consider this company knowing they want you to pay for travel costs when THEY want you to come to the interview? Not really a company I'd want to work for.

Why would you fly out if it wasn't covered? lol

I've been head hunted here and there over the years, and have taken advantage of a handful of travel interviews purely for the free trip.

Haha, I gave this advice in a previous thread and got roasted for it. Regardless of if you want the job or not, free trips are awesome!

If this is oil and gas the company should be flying you business for sure. Any other industry I can't comment on.

I just got hired within the pharmaceutical industry. Head office is based in Montreal. Interview process went phone interview, in Calgary interview with regional director, in Calgary interview with HR (flew in from montreal), business development leader (flew in from Vancouver) and regional director again, lastly a facetime/skype interview with National sales director.

Personally I can't see why a business serious about hiring a candidate wouldn't pay for your travel or in my case pay for the interviewers.

Now I am looking forward to 3 weeks in montreal for training.
