View Full Version : windshield ice removal tips?

just wondering if anybody has some suggestions on steps to remove/prevent ice buildup on windshields. (i park on a driveway since my truck won't fit in the garage)

i've looked on the internet and seen suggestions for vinegar/rubbing alcohol mixtures to help removal. i'm somewhat skeptical (and lazy) to try since it's likely gets too cold here anyway. so i usually just spray the shit out of it with washer fluid and wait it out.

already have a carstarter but i'm not a fan of letting it run for extended periods of time and already lift the wiperblades up whenever it's going to snow.

Tinted windshield of course, you don't see the ice, it's gone.

Take out the windshield for the winter.

If it won't fit in the garage I'm guessing a it's cuz it's raised so scraping it would be difficult unless u do it on a step stool thing lol.

De icing windshield washer?
Or when u turn it off make sure the heat is set to blow at the windshield and then just start it up for a bit (that is the point of having ur remote starter no?)

I've tried rubbing alcohol and the best thing is a brush with a scraper

Rain-X your windshield/windows if you don't already. Once a month in winter. Ice comes off super smooth and easy with that stuff on it.

Also, when I used to park my DD truck outside, I'd throw a tarp over the cab whenever I knew there'd be precipitation overnight. Might seem like a PITA, but 2 min. to put it on, and 30 seconds to take it off beats 10 min. of scraping.

I just command start my truck. It automatically turns to defrost and fan high when command started so I just hang around until it's all sorted out.

You can get ones with super long reach... but i think the unwritten rule of vehicle ownership is if you cant reach your windshield... you have no business driving it :nut:

Fuck that shit. I've been there and everything wants to kill you.

I don't know how to prevent ice formations but lifting your windshield wipers up will make life so much easier.

place a cardboard cutout to the size of your windshield every night and you should be fine

I have heard there are some sprays you can put on the night before to prevent ice from sticking. No idea if those work. I have a spray bottle filled with rubbing alcohol, and that works a bit. I have heard that methanol works better, so I have some purchased that I will use once the rubbing alcohol is gone.

Isn't methanol a big part of winter washer fluid? That should work well.

You can apply a glass coating to it, which will make it ez-er 2 remove

Yeah, I'm pretty sure methanol is THE active ingredient in windshield washer fluid, so that should work great. Not sure where the cheapest place to buy that is, but it's $2.49 per l at princess auto.

This, I did this when I used to park outside. Come home, slide the cardboard under the windshield wipers (takes like 10 seconds). Wake up in the morning, take the cardboard out (takes like 10 second), and your windshield is ice free, no scrapping.

I'll definetely be trying that.

For the other windows, I'll try the Rain-x, but leave one without Rain-x to see if there's any difference.

Is this what the internet has reduced us to?? We come onto a forum to ask how to get ice off our windshields?!!!

"Hello, beyond? Yeah...I park in my driveway and in the morning I need to pull out onto the roadway...any tips on how you do that?"

You act so surprised. The technological age killed independence years ago, roughly when the encyclopedia became useless.

Yep.

We'll all remember this thread when the ice is thick and hard, the scraper barely does shit, and you just hope that the glass doesn't crack.

R is for reverse not radio right?? kidding..

if you really want to know the source of my question its because i drop off 2 children under the age of 4 in the morning to a dayhome. i can't leave them in the house unattended while i brush off the vehicle and i'm hoping for reasonable tips to speed up the removal of ice/frost once it gets shitty out so my kids aren't crying in the truck while i'm rushing to scrap shit off my windshield.

i'm sure i'm not the only parent on this forum that might have to do that but i didn't think i'd have to type out a whole story to get a response.

Yeah. Anyone?

I tried to just drive out by using 'D' and the car spun on the ice. It was whhherring and sounded like my baring is gone.

I tried setting it to 'P' and the engine just revved, tires didn't even turn. I checked the breaks and thy sem to werk. I am thinking my traction control is too sensitive and the 'P' "Performance" setting isn't allowing the tires to spin. What shop can I take the car too for cheep? I need this fixed

Yes you do, I read that. *pat, pat*.. And yet you still need help on how to defrost your windshield, so that you don't have two kids screaming in your car, or left alone in the house while you figure out how to get ice off the windshield???

Just what IS the purpose of the remote starter you purchased with/for your vehicle then?

man you guys are hardcore this morning.

ok here, how about this question. if someone said "hey, instead of warming your car up for 15minutes, i found out you can spray this on your windshield every couple weeks and you could brush ice off in like a minute" , would you use it?

on a side note, yeah i think the cardboard would work too.

There is a difference between remote starting your car to get the motor warm, and remote starting your car to remove an inch of ice off the windshield. One takes 5 minutes, and the other takes a half hour + of unnecessary wear on your engine.

Pretty sure this is sarcasm, but,

DO NOT DO THIS!

I remember my dad having to drive me to school one day, and he brought out a pot of boiling water for the windshield.

-35 out and a pot of boiled water equals one cracked to shit windshield.

Friends mom would put 2 old towels on the front and back windshields, that seemed to work pretty good

You could install an interior car warmer and have it on a timer to come on a couple of hours before you have to leave.

You can then, when the temperature drops, also plug in your block heater so that the engine is warmed and the windows clear.

Plug in the truck. Remote start in moring. Ice will be melted or melted enough for the wipers to take it off by the time you get to the car. I do this every morning, and unless there is snow that I have to brush off, it works.

A slightly less intense version of rookie101's suggestion. Park under a tree or beside a building. You will get much less frost and snow on your car. An unheated carport is even better.
