Lip-syncing Madonna 'should be shot', well that seems a solid start to this vert recent thirteen minute video investigation the use of Autotune in the music industry.

/
How common is Autotune and miming among artists?

Fab Morvan, Former Milli Vanilli frontman: Autotune is the standard in the music industry today, whether youÕre a top singer or whether youÕre a low range singer.

The fans of Britney Spears have been with her since Hit Me Baby One More Time and then when they grow up theyÕre more aware of the world of entertainment and they realize that since theyÕve been going to shows, sheÕs never sang live.

RT: Yeah, do you understand why people say they're getting tired of it?

Morvan: Another thing is when people record vocals nowadays they sing the verse and then the chorus is recorded just once, then the chorus is flown in in each part of the record. Back in the days, people sang every chorus, so you donÕt have this flow anymore, itÕs very sterile.

Super gay. Just goes to show how "artists" are made these days.

Did anyone ever believe that a person can sing flawlessly while running around on stage?

I don't listen to mainstream music nowadays. I thought I was just getting old lol. Using technology to improve quality is one thing, relying on technology so that you can start with no quality is lame. People keep buying the stuff they are selling, I don't blame them neither.

A lot of the songs that I listen to, I actually prefer the live version than the studio recorded one.

That's why Michael Buble and Eric Clapton are the shit!

I do! Look at the top songs on Itunes or youtube, its all complete shit. If people stop buying this shit the industry will have to change

Haha, "them" being the industry, I think we are on the same page. If people are happy with my crap, I'll be happy to sell it too.

Hot and steamy smelly crap, anyone?

As long as the performer is honest about the use of Autotune, fine listen as you wish. Hiding it is simply misleading. Well at least some are still singing without voice-viagra:

not too many mainstream vocalists exist these days...

Steven Tyler really is a once a generation talent, and a skinny white guy with the soul of motown

Went to see Chris Cornell acoustic.
He is a fantastic singer live. Was even doing requests.

This is to be expected when music is merely just crap that people like because they are told to like it.
Why bother looking for talent when you can pull any person off the street and turn them into a super "talent" mega star.
Not to mention the negotiating power it gives the labels when they can turn whoever they want into the next big thing.

Just look at music writing credits now days, it's becoming pretty obvious they only slap the "artists" name in there solely out of pity/maintaining image.

Yeah, there's lots of excellent Musicians around playing amazing live gigs. They just aren't selling out the biggest stadiums. The Group Think theory takes over and the majority of the population listens to the same garbage force fed to them in clubs and the radio.

If you want to hear live voice, one genre that NEVER shies away from it is metal :)

Nightwish's new lead vocalist (Floor Jansen) is astounding. Two good examples:

Last three minutes of this song for vocal range displayed (9:28 = holy shit)

Just a freakin awesome song :D

Blind Guardian (Hansi Kursch):

A little classic metal/rock in here:

And, of course, two of the greatest ever:

Ronnie James Dio (he's SIXTY ONE in this video o_O!)

Bruce Dickinson

Michael Buble is fantastic, but I think you'll find that he does use autotune. In fact, I don't think you'll find a SINGLE artist that doesn't use it, at least for their album recordings.
Many will use it because they're entertainers, and it's pretty much impossible to dance and sing and sound good without autotune.
As for the recordings. Studio time is expensive, it's used to touch up songs so the artist can spend hours in the studio instead of days or weeks.
Buble has even admitted to using it when making pop songs.

I agree it is over used, but you're not really going to find anybody that doesn't use it at all.

I've seen him live and doesn't seem to use Autotune while performing.

I hope that's not the reason why he's so good... Then I'll be very disappointed. :(

Halford painkiller live, without a doubt singing without autotune:

Rod Steward, no matter how eccentric, has some amazing vocal talent, and this concert you can also tell its 100% rod:

hate to say it, but Hanna Alberta boy actually has a "golden" voice, but insists on creating and playing terrible music:
