As promised, some photos! I was able to pick up one ticket to the underground CERN open days and was there on September 29th. The tour lasted about 15 minutes, it was very quick, and they didn't leave more than 10-15 seconds for photos at each stop. The groups were small at 10-12 per group.

I met two guys in line for the tour, one was actually interning at CERN for the engineering group that helps more accurately 'steer' the beams for more head-on collisions. Very cool to chat with him.

It was absolutely mind-blowing to see in person, the scale of this project is incredible

The entrance to the ALICE experiment, elevator inside goes down 65 meters.

ALICE! It is MASSIVE in person. The door alone to the detector is 300 tons. The scale of the project is just ridiculous.

As close as we got to the control room, picture from the bus.

Whats really amazing is the speeds that protons achieve in there, mind blowing really. IIRC, its something like 11,900 Revolution's of that HUGE tunnel network every second.

Just nuts really. Absurdly costly to build too. I'd love to work in such a place.... just bending science in every experiment really.

I thought they'd make you wear a full suit or something at a 9 billion dollar-pinnacle of human achievement research facility, nope just a hairnet and a hard hat? lol
